Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval townhouse located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with rich history pre-dating Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic vistas in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assissi, the distant Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and, of course, the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

The house itself is over 500 years old, restored with the help of a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large cantinas--caves where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. The entire structure, caves included, has been converted into four beautiful units, all available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Each of the units is elegantly furnished with antique-style and rustic furnishings, and each unit has a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking pleasure. Some of the units have fireplaces or woodstoves, and all are filled with incredible Italian decorations and fixtures such as handblown glass and handpainted tiles. Units sleep two to six people and can be combined.

This apartment in Spello was wonderful. The old bones with modern conveniences. The location was panoramic and the food in the town was great. The contact person was so wonderful to deal with and the contact person on site was very responsive. It is close to Assisi and can catch the train for day trips or driving is easily done also. VVV

We were 4 women traveling together to celebrate a 70th birthday. I picked Casa Spello because of the wonderful reviews and was not disappointed. Gina was a delight to work with and everything was as promised. Spello is a magical town and is close to everything. We rented a car from the Rome airport and with Gina's directions, had no problem getting to Spello. Nadia was charming and so helpful. The restaurants in Spello are excellent. We managed to visit 8 hilltop towns and each night looked forward to returning to Casa Spello. Thank you Gina, we loved Casa Spello and the beautiful, friendly, warm town of Spello. Thank you also for the wonderful bottle of wine and bread awaiting us. We so enjoyed sitting outside in the garden, meeting other guests and sharing wine, cheese and other goodies. We hope to return soon.

We haad a wonderful stay at Casa Spello. Casa Spello is such a beautiful house with so much character. It is a great base. We visited Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Montefalc, Bevagna, Deruta and even caught the train to Florence. Our bags are a lot heavier with our goodies of wine, ceramics and leather. Our most memorable meal was a 7 course dinner in alla via di mezzo restraurant at Torre Del Colle (near Bevagna), so much food and so delicious. It was always nice to return at the end of a hot day to our cool Casa Spello. We were blessed with perfect weather allowing us to have breakfast each morning on the terrace by the rose bush. We also had a couple of home cooked dinners outside and every evening enjoyed a glass of wine while taking in the special view. After traveling through Europe, Casa Spello provided the perfect relaxation we needed before our long flight back to Australia. Also a special thanks to the lovely Nadia for her help and kindness. regards...Corinne & Bart,Sydney, Australia

Bella Spello

Unit 4 Cleopatra – Built into a wine cellar but looks like a hermit’s cave. Even though it’s the smallest of the 4 apartments (at Casa Spello) it suited us perfectly. We booked our stay at Casa Spello for three weeks, wanting time for relaxation and to make day trips to surrounding towns and cities slightly further away. The apartment always felt like home as we returned each day, glad to be able to throw together a simple meal, or try a restaurant close by. Our favorite restaurants were: Porta Venere, and Enoteca. Both have excellent staff and food , although wines there were very expensive. Several times we shopped at the big supermarket in the lower town and found it had very reasonably priced meat and produce. The garden down below the window is ideal for drinks and nibbles on a warm afternoon, made even better when joined by guests from the other units. Day trips we enjoyed most Gubbio, Cortona, Trevi, walk along the Roman aqueduct (acquedotto Romano), walk to Foligno, walk to Villa Fidelia and exploring Spello.Thank you Gina for providing such a cosy and convenient “home” we will recommend it to other Aussie travellers who get the Italian bug.!

Exellent stay in Casa Spello

We had the pleasure of stay a week in Casa Spello. It was wonderful, the appartment was very comfortable, and met our needs very well. It is in a great location, and we were able to walk around Spello and find our way back again. We ate breakfast and dinner out side in the fragrant garden, and enjoyed the fabulas views over the countryside. I would recommend this accomodation, and would stay again.

What a pleasant surprise we had as we entered the lovely center of Spello, a charming hill town that has been unspoiled by tourists. It is a town built of stone hundreds of years ago and there are beautiful churches and public buildings as well as small shops with art, clothing, jewelry, and food and wine. The local people were so warm and kind and willing to help with directions or suggestions whenever we inquired. We were met by Nadia who is so sweet and caring. She showed us to our place and helped us get settled in and told us to call if we needed anything. This is a converted residence built about 700 years ago. It has been updated with all the modern conveniences and we felt at ease and comfortable while at the same time in awe that we were staying in such a beautiful and historic place. It is built of stone with very thick walls, (6-8 feet??) which keeps the place cool in the summer. There is air conditioning but we seldom had it on even though the outside temperature was 80-90 degrees. The home is situated on the hillside with beautiful views and a delightful garden. We spent several lunches and a few dinners there under the trellis covered in grape vines, enjoying the views and italian wine as well as the cold fresh water from the natural spring fountain. The town is perfectly situated in the hills of Umbria and is convenient for excursions to neighboring towns including Assisi which is very near and beautiful, (though pretty touristy). We also made it to Florence and Perugia. We rented a car for the week though the train station is convenient as well. We had morning cappuccinos in one of several charming cafes, one with a large and beautiful garden setting overlooking the surrounding hills. You can walk to ond of several very nice restaurants for evening meals. This was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations we've had and we will definitely return and stay at Casa Spello. It really is a gem.

A magical experience

We loved the apartment with its wonderful views over Umbria. It was a great place to stay with easy walking (on hillside with cobblestones) to local shops and resteraunts. We found all the necessary equipment in the kitchen to prepare simple meals. The only downside was that you have to walk several blocks oncobbled lanes to access the apartment from transport and this is hard with cases .The apartment was sunny and welcoming and we enjoyed the use of the garden. The town was full of flowers and the people friendly - a great place to stay and explore the countryside

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Spello. The property was beautiful and area was very quiet. We stayed in the 3 bedroom unit. Everything we needed was there. Lots of room, nicely decorated and a delightful location. Close to shops and restaurants. Nadia, our contact was very helpful. Highly recommend this property.

Paradise in Spello

Guest: Pfm (San Francisco, CA)
Date of Stay: 05/02/11 Review Submitted: 05/02/11

My five week stay at Casa Spello in the Tiberius unit in April, 2011 exceeded all my expectations. The view, the location, the amenities, everything was beautiful. There is a wonderful garden where you can dine (weather permitting), view the sunset, just relax and read and enjoy the setting. If you are lucky to be there when the hostess is also there you are in for a treat. Gina's helpful tips, guidance and overall concern for your total enjoyment went "above and beyond" what any owner would provide. She knows the best of everything in Spello...restaurants, cafes, shopping, etc. and she may even cook you a meal! Even if she is not there, a binder in each unit provide all of the information you will need to make your stay an enjoyable experience. Spello is a charming village in a perfect location for exploring all of Umbria. You can take day trips and then return to your own beautiful retreat at Casa Spello. I definitely will return!

Owner response:When I started managing Casa Spello, I had no idea what it was like to manage a vacation property. I only knew that I wanted my guests to be treated the way I would like to be treated when I travel. As the proud owner of Casa Spello in Via Mura Vecchie, I love being helpful to my guests when I am there. I am proud to announce that we now have the use of a nearby swimming pool for our guests. We will be holding a wedding and a wedding anniversary soon on the property. We also have an additional unit as a vacation rental: Marc Anthony Unit has increased our capacity to have more guests. I am delighted that people are having such a great time at Casa Spello. My only regret is that I cannot accept all the invitations from our guests to visit them. Thank you for your wonderful review.
