Our stay here far out exceeded our expectations. The house was clean, comfortable and equipped with every thing you might need. Sam was the most gracious of hosts and was one of the main attractions to Kona Paradise. Do you know he is a surfing legend? Pebble Beach was an unexpected jewel and made us wish we had another week to explore the reef just under the waves. If you are looking for a paradise within a paradise, this is the place. We are already planning our return trip.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Very steep one mile long driveway to reach the unit and just as steep going back uphill. Sam is very nice and helpful. The place is clean and peaceful. We wished we did more beach activities from our property like snorkling, fishish and sea kayaking. The portable cooktop was not enough to efficiently prepare a meal from scratch. Normal voices travel easlily upstairs to Sam's unit so everything you are saying downstairs is easily heard upstairs thourgh the stairway with only a small door for seperation. The few cockroaches, aunts and lizzards, mosquitos. on the walls are just part of the experience and are common on multiple other accomadations in that area. So just keep the screen closed and get a mosquito repellant. Also get a few aunt and roach traps for the countersRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Sam's place was perfect for our vacationing interests. From the spacious deck, we enjoyed the awesome ocean view and sunsets, occasional whales passing by, and the continual serenade of bird sounds. We walked to the beach each day, as it was just four blocks below us. The beautiful southern hiking trail from the beach paralleled the rocky shoreline for 1.5 miles, passing by ancient cultural and volcano sites to two scenic cliff overlooks. High waves prevented any snorkeling or kayaking during our visit, but we enjoyed relaxing on rocks north of the beach watching the wave action below us. The "Place of Refuge" National Historic Park was just ten miles north, while South Point and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach (sea turtles) were within 50 miles south. Sam was prompt in reponding to our questions through the entire process, and he graciously provided everything to make our stay comfortable—even the tissues were soft! This is not the place for vacationers who are looking for fancy hotels, city lights, and night life—but it is the perfect place if you just want a clean, comfortable home in a peaceful community with no street lights, but plenty of nature life! Thank you, Sam!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I stayed at Sams during our visit for our 15 yr anniversary. First off the pictures do no justice. This place is charming and the views are stunning!! We loved everything about it. And Sam is a wonderful person! Very helpful and willing to help in any way he could. Even left fresh mangos on the porch for us! :-) The walk down to the black sand beach was very pleasant and not far at all! I highly recommend this home for couples, or even those with children!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We stayed at Sam's place for a week, our second week in the islands. The photos are completely accurate, however do not do the place justice. It is absolutely spotless. East to use kitchen, great grill. While there wasn't more than needed in the kitchen, it was complete for preparing breakfast, and having a great sunset grilled fish dinner. He has the refrigerator stocked not only with coffee and sugar, but with some water bottles as well which was a nice touch. The ice maker was key as we filled camel-paks for hiking/ day trips every morning. We always felt we had complete privacy. The inside itself was clean, comfortable, spacious and appropriately outfitted with nice towels, clean bathrooms, comfortable seating. Getting to the great part- the lanai. The photos just can't do this justice. Even the ones I took just can't capture the expansive view, the sound of the ocean, and the nightly sunset performances. There is seating- tables, chairs, etc.,. The TV and wireless were very nice to have. The kayaks were great. We had our own snorkel gear but I know Sam provided that as well. The neighborhood is really pleasant. It is along this completely insane hill dotted with homes in a stadium seating kind of fashion. Every home must have a picture perfect view. Although a bit intimidating to drive up and down, we had no problems at all in 1st gear. A neighbor taking a walk even gave us a personal tour of the trails along the shore which were awesome. The beach was also lovely, although we did not end up snorkeling there as there was quite some high surf during our stay. The local market and fruit stand were perfect for all our needs- fresh catch and fresh picks. We could have stayed our full 2 weeks at Sam's, as well as the big island- never got to half the island!! When we return to HI, I hope it will be here. Thanks Sam!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our stay was excellent! The owner was extremely nice and accommodating and immediately we felt like part of the neighborhood. Views were fabulous access to the beach and hiking was at our doorstep, My only complaint was the mattress was not to my taste and the owner, who lived above, went to work very early--I am a very light sleeper Otherwise, we had a vacation we will never forget.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

This was our second trip to Hawaii. A year and a half back we spent a week on Maui--and absolutely loved it. This time around I talked my wife (i.e., a beach-and-snorkel person) into a compromise. (I'm the let's-go-do-something person.) Go someplace "new" for a few days and then go to someplace we knew we liked. The new place was the Big Island--and Sam's place. My fear was realized: We wished we had stayed at Sam's place much, much longer! We are not bed-and-breakfast types, so the idea of staying on someone's ground floor was a bit of a concern to us. Not to worry. As another reviewer said, Sam was around when you had a question, but otherwise you were staying in your own place. And a really nice place it is. (I sit in a one-bedroom condo on Maui as I write this, and it is nice. But ....) Lots and lots of room; two bathrooms in fact--which, when you are traveling with two women, as I am, has real advantages. Our college-sophomore daughter had her space, and we had ours. Spacious living room (listen to Sam's CD's to enhance an already great atmosphere!), BIG bedroom--and that porch! I'd say the view is pretty much 225 degrees, standing at the west rail. Unobstructed, to say the least. Quality Weber grill--and stocked to the nine's with kayaks, snorkel gear, beach chairs, umbrella... Sam is a born Hawaiian, and clearly he wants guests to enjoy what the Big Island has to offer.. On that score, while we are now really enjoying Maui, the Valley Isle and the Big Island are distinctly different places. The Big Island has geographic diversity that Maui cannot match. (Yes, we've circumnavigated Maui and 'headed for the hills' as well.) A trip south from Sam's place to Kilauea, the first thing that struck us was the rapid changes in eco-climates encountered along the way. Don't like those banana trees? Wait ten minutes, you'll be in African savanna. When it started to rain on our way back up the hill from Chain of Craters road, we just turned right at the highway, went into Hilo--and had sunshine and banyan trees that you would not believe. So, next time maybe we will try a third island--since the experiment this time went so well. But if that is the plan, we for sure will spend the bulk of the vacation on the Big Island. And hopefully the timing will be such that we can again stay at Sam's place. Great central location, great lodgings, great host. (And if Sam advises against taking the kayaks out for a spin, trust him--he's the native!)Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

What an amazing view - 270 degrees around. It is a short walk to Pebble beach which has great snorkeling and you can launch the kayaks from there. There is also a rugged trail that follows the rocky coastline that is all undeveloped. If you are looking for a beautiful place off the beaten path this is it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.
