Location: Cassis, Provence, France, Europe (20 min by car from Marseille TGV which is 3 hrs from Paris)

Accommodations:  Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1 Bath (Sleeps 6-8)

Keywords:  Apartment

Our sunny, inviting apartment occupies the complete second floor of a traditional "fishermans house" constructed in the early 1900's. It is one minute from the port on a small, quiet street and faces south toward the sea and north toward the hills. Guests should note that the stairwell leading to the apartment is steep and narrow.

The apartment has a spacious living/dining room with an open kitchen which opens onto a sun-filled balcony large enough for meals or to read and sunbathe. The apartment is furnished with antiques and original art work and reflects the panache of Southern France. There is a gourmet European kitchen, fully equipped with service for 12, and all conveniences. The living area has a working fireplace, sofa bed (double) and cozy armchairs. The dining table will seat eight guests.

Lofts above the living room and both bedrooms are designed to give guests privacy and room for individual activities. The living room loft is furnished with HD flat screen TV and DVD, ADSL internet connection, stereo and CD player with DVD connection to the TV. It can also accommodate additional sleeping. There is a full bathroom (Italian shower) and separate toilet.

The master bedroom is furnished with a queen bed, has its own balcony and the loft above is an office which is DSL-equipped. There is a small single bed in this loft space. The guest bedroom has a double bed and its loft has a single bed. All rooms have French windows, and they are light and airy.

The apartment is elegant, while feeling warm and comfortable, with a decor that reflects the atmosphere of the sea, hills and vineyards of this lovely part of Provence. The apartment totals 90 square meters (970 square feet), so it is comfortable for a family with children or couples vacationing together. There is extensive documentation provided for guests to explore the town, the Calanques of Cassis and the surrounding region.

Here are renters'comments: "You will have to evict us. I don't think we will be able to leave!! Everything is perfect, gorgeous day today. The apartment is lovely. I had the best sleep last night since coming to France. Glorious bed." (John & Naomi, May 2006).

"We stayed in this lovely Cassis apartment in the heat of August, and absolutely loved it! While days were beach-going hot, nighttime breezes meant the sleeping was very comfortable. The apartment could not be better equipped or more central. We walked everywhere with our 10-month son who particularly enjoyed the beaches, playground and early morning strolls in the harbour to see fishermen bring in their catch. The baby's bedtime meant that we couldn't always go out for dinner, but the apartment balcony allowed an intimate way to enjoy the town's atmosphere. From the apartment, it is a short walk to the three local beaches, but we also hilked to the Calanques (a must-see) and spent a wonderful day on a beach there. Cassis kept us entertained for the week. We were sad to leave, but did so extremely relaxed and happy." (Malcolm & Natasha, August 2006)

We have a privileged relationship with the lovely hotel, Le Clos des Aromes (04.42.01.71.84), and can arrange meals on their beautiful terrace. Sunday lunch there is especially delightful. Cassis has retained its authentic "fishing village" identity, while being welcoming to European and English-speaking tourists. Just walk to the port in early morning and see the fishermen setting out for the day's catch, and coming back to port to display their offerings!

There are two beaches in town with showers; the boules alley, a children's park and many flavors of gelato two steps away. The town limits car traffic, so strolling is a favorite pastime, along with the obligatory pastis at 5:00 pm. We chose Cassis after many trips to the South because it offers everything--the delicious flavors of Provence, excellent access to other major Provencal sites and cities as well as good air and train connections to Paris, Milan and other European destinations.

We hope that you will find a warm place in your heart for Cassis as we did.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2006

Leaning out of our apartment window in Paris, we can almost touch the Moulin Rouge. Darrell and I moved to here in 2001, after having lived in Seattle, Hartford and Brooklyn. We wanted a mid-life adventure and felt that Paris had everything--the buzz of a big city, great access to other European destinations, famous French cuisine (well, wine and cheese)and the experience of a new culture. When we miss having our toes in the ocean, we hop on the TGV and find ourselves in Cassis 3 hours later. Why Cassis? We had a rule: only Paris. But people kept saying to us, "you love the sea; have you been to Cassis?" When we finally went, it was a "coup de foudre" (love at first sight, loosely translated.) So we adopted the "Cassis habit"--several times a year we went, especially out of season when it was still warm enough to swim and the sky is blue, but there weren't as many tourists. Finally we realized that it was perfect for us; our real life is in Paris and our escape life is in Cassis. It can't get better than this!

Why the Owner Chose Cassis

As expats, we wanted to live and invest in places where we felt we could make friends and not be isolated in the expat American community. We have spent time in the famous French "watering holes" (Nice, Cannes, St. Tropez) and they didn't rhyme with us. We are interested in Roman archeology and have enjoyed exploring the Roman cities near Marseille. When we visited Cassis and the Calanques, we immediately felt that we could make this city our own. We like the simple local architecture, which has been protected by local authorities, the scale of the village and the fact that it has a regular life beyond tourism. We especially enjoy going to Cassis out of season, when the pace is slower and people return to their everyday lives. We found our apartment in a traditional Cassis fisherman's house and have updated and restored it, while retaining its simple character. Sitting on the balcony, gazing down the street; sipping a pastis and watching the Cap Canaille become golden at sunset; sunning on the beach at the height of the summer season--all of these are the pleasures that we savor in Cassis. We take great satisfaction in sharing our Cassis with our guests and hope that they will feel some of the same magic that has touched us.
