This serene garden setting, sheltered behind a gated limestone wall, invites quiet repose among green palms and bright blooming bougainvillea, accompanied by the sound of water burbling down a natural rock fountain. The house surrounds a broad central terrace, with a three bedroom townhouse on one side which may be rented as a whole or divided into one and two bedroom units each with full kitchen and dining areas. Each suite is uniquely decorated to provide a comfortable homelike atmosphere. There are private balconies on the upper level overlooking the garden, and the lower level opens directly onto the central courtyard. The compound faces a natural park on a quiet lane away from traffic, around the corner from the entrance to Yalku Lagoon and a convenient 250 meters from the beach on Half Moon Bay. Akumal Bay Beach and the commercial center are a short two kilometers down the beach road.
Here in Akumal we respect our neighbor species. We don't swim with captive dolphins penned in artificial waters. Instead we can swim out into Akumal Bay to watch the giant sea turtles graze among the sea grass. They tolerate humans as long as we don't approach too close. In summer at night turtles climb onto the beaches of Akumal's three bays to lay their eggs in the sand. Throughout the summer months one may encounter their protected nests. CEA (the Centro Ecologico de Akumal), the only community organization on the Caribbean Coast dedicated to the protection of our unique environments, has special programs for children centered on our turtle population. From August to November they conduct groups to view the emerging baby turtles race to the sea as only turtles can.
Yalku Lagoon is a protected habitat where many species of colorful tropical fish swim in the crevices of the collapsed cenotes feeding into the lagoon.
To help you stay fit and healthy while on your vacation, we have this year added a Fitness Center for our guests with a treadmill, elliptical and rowing machines and a weight machine. Another feature popular with our guests is the roof garden sunning area with a tented gazebo for those who would rather read or relax in shade and breeze.

Designed for flexibility, this townhome (# 102/103) can be rented as a three bedroom house or as two independent apartments. Each floor has a large fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The first floor (#102) becomes a one bedroom apartment for two with en suite bathroom featurin unique sunken bath. The open living area conveys a sense both of comfortable spaciousness and homey intimacy.. The kitchen has a huge central island for extra working space with a breakfast counter for informal eating. The glass topped dining room table with a beautifully carved wooden base seats six to eight. The second floor (#103) has two bedrooms with independent access to the bathroom. As a separate apartment it includes a large kitchen and dining area lit by large windows. Guests can relax in the breeze on the covered balcony overlooking the garden. I spent a lot of time reading reviews online to find a place to stay close to the water and removed from lots of night life. I found the perfect place in Casa Gatos in Akumal. Dan and Dave are such gracious hosts, and I can promise that my next visit to the Yucatan will bring me right to the door of Casa Gatos. Everything is so beautiful and delightfully decorated. I found the apartment to be so spacious and comfortable and inviting...after a long day of snorkeling it was nice to come home! We will certainly return because Casa Gatos has all that one would need (and then some) to have a fabulous, relaxing vacation. The fact that we could walk around the corner to the lagoon and the beach made it that much sweeter. Snorkeling in Akumal Bay was equally fantastic as we counted 9 sea turtles along our route. Your gated courtyard was a place I would have been content to just sit in for much of our stay, and the sound of the fountain was a delight. Thank you for serving the coffee and treats in the morning...a wonderful added touch! I found the space very well equipped with the essentials, and it is extremely clean. I adore the feel of Akumal, so quaint, friendly and breathtakingly beautiful. Yes, we still have the glow of our time in Akumal and especially in Gatos with you both. We really did have a wonderful time there. We were there for a wedding, true, and the happy surprise was how nice it was to stay with you - nice for all our group. It really created a home feeling during our special time there. Now, of course, everyone is back home in far-flung parts of the world, but we still feel the connection and have fond memories of our time together. We've been in touch one way or another with all of them. We want to express our gratitude for your welcoming and ongoing warmth and hospitality. You both were an integral part of our little wedding community. About the owner: After visiting Akumal yearly over a twenty year span in order to enjoy the opportunities for open water and cave diving in the area, we began to plan for our retirement. So, in 2002 we purchased Casa Gatos, and when we retired eight years later packed our cats into our cars and shipped our possessions in a twenty foot container to this quaint and laid back resort community on the Caribbean Coast. We didn't undertake the move lightly, leaving behind all that was familiar to live in a foreign country among people that we only knew casually from short vacation trips. It proved to be the best decision we could have made. Akumal is such a friendly and welcoming place, we felt immediately at home. Maintaining the property and taking care of our guests gives us just enough to do. And what has made this the best experience for us is our guests. We enjoy meeting and interacting with people from all over North, South and Central America and Europe. It has added just the right amount of spice to our lives.
Why the Owner Chose Akumal:
The Caribbean Coast of Mexico with its clear and beautiful waters and interesting reefs coupled with a reputation as the safest region of Mexico has seen a surge in tourism, Akumal has been unique in having avoided the explosive growth that transformed Cancun and Playa del Carmen into mega resort cities. It has retained its character as a quiet and laid back village paradise even in high season. Neighbors walk their dogs every morning, run or jog, dive or snorkel when they want or laze around on the beach. There is still more green than concrete here and you would never mistake Akumal for Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Beyond leisure activities, there is access to the historic sites of the great age of Maya Civilization and the Spanish Colonial Cities of the Yucatan Peninsula, with Southern Mexico, .Belize and Guatamala within an easy distance for slightly longer trips.
