Sheltered behind a gated limestone wall, a garden of green palms and brilliant hibiscus and bright flowering bougainvillea, invites repose beside tinkling fountain waters. The townhouse, on the right side of the wide plant filled courtyard can be rented as a three bedroom home or it can be divided into a one bedroom and two bedroom apartment, each with full kitchen and dining areas. Each suite is uniquely decorated to provide a comfortable homelike atmosphere. A palapa roofed balcony on the upper level looks out over the garden, while the lower level opens directly onto the central courtyard with a garden terrace at the front.
The entrance faces a natural park across a quiet lane away from traffic, around the corner from the entrance to Yalku Lagoon and a convenient 250 meters from the beach on Half Moon Bay with La Lunita Restaurant and La Buena Vida Beach Bar on the water. Akumal Bay and the commercial center are a short two kilometers down the beach road.
Here in Akumal we respect our neighbor species. We don't swim with captive dolphins penned in artificial canals. Instead we can swim out into Akumal Bay to watch the giant sea turtles graze among the sea grass in their natural environment. They tolerate humans as long as we don't approach too close. The upper level of the townhouse can be divided off, becoming a large, two bedroom apartment. The kitchen is well equipped with gas stove, microwave, full refrigerator and all necessary small appliances and utensils with dining for six looking out over the central court and lit by an antique leaded glass window from nineteenth century pub. The thatched roofed balcony that opens from the front bedroom is screened by broad leafed banana trees and palms fronds stretching from the garden below. Both bedrooms have seating areas and are decorated with oriental wood prints and serigraphs. An interior stairway leads to a roof garden of cactus, yucca and palms, open to gentle sea breezes. Here guests can sun or relax in the shade of the tented gazebo.

About the owner: After visiting Akumal yearly over a twenty year span in order to enjoy the opportunities for open water and cave diving in the area, we began to plan for our retirement. So, in 2002 we purchased Casa Gatos, and when we retired eight years later packed our cats into our cars and shipped our possessions in a twenty foot container to this quaint and laid back resort community on the Caribbean Coast.
We didn't undertake the move lightly, leaving behind all that was familiar to live in a foreign country among people that we only knew casually from short vacation trips. It proved to be the best decision we could have made. Akumal is such a friendly and welcoming place, we felt immediately at home. Maintaining the property and taking care of our guests gives us just enough to do. And what has made this the best experience for us is our guests. We enjoy meeting and interacting with people from all over North, South and Central America and Europe. It has added just the right amount of spice to our lives.
Why the Owner Chose Akumal: The Caribbean Coast of Mexico with its clear and beautiful waters and interesting reefs coupled with a reputation as the safest region of Mexico has seen a surge in tourism, Akumal has been unique in having avoided the explosive growth that transformed Cancun and Playa del Carmen into mega resort cities. Neighbors walk their dogs every morning, run or jog, dive or snorkel when they want or laze around on the beach. We have so enjoyed it that we added a garden to the roof, where we can enjoy the sun and breeze, surrounded by cacti, agave and yucca plants. We also added a fitness room.
