'Marais-Rue Chapon' apartment is located in a building that was erected in the late 18th century. It retains some very specific cachets of that era such as apparent beams, stone wall & red octagonal tiles. Being located in a very narrow street, 'Marais-Rue Chapon' enjoys peace & quiet.
Marais in the English language means "swamps", which tells you that this part of town was a very important swampy area. Around the 15th century, the King decided to dry this part of town & make it a strong point. He decided to build a castle, & by doing so, his whole court followed him & private townhouses & huge mansions were built one bigger, larger & better than the others. It was boom town!
History goes on & another King decided to build a larger, bigger & farther away Chateau. The "Marais" declined for years. About 30 years ago, due to the permanent & perpetual changes, that part of town became and still is, one of Paris' most active districts.
Everything that happens there is totally normal. One can discover smaller museums such as Picasso’s for instance, that’s nested in a small street inside a private mansion, or large one such as Pompidou only located at a couple of blocks from your apartment. Paris' magnificent City Hall building is also nearby, so is l’Ile St Louis, Notre Dame, La Conciergerie, Le Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, etc. The opposite direction will take you to Place de la Republique, Montmartre, Le Sacre-Coeur, Moulin Rouge, La Butte Montmartre, etc.
The list of shops is endless, one is totally overwhelmed with the choices: Clothing, shoes, flower shops, antiques bookstores, memorabilia, accessories, jewelleries, ethnics, France’s newest creations come from there as well. Some shops are upscale in design, concept, looks, etc. Restaurants, Bars, Brasseries, Cafes abound.
