This special home sits directly across the street from the beautiful and secluded clothing-optional black sand beach called Kehena Beach, where the wild dolphins frequently swim and the humpback whales come by in the winter months. You can easily see the ocean from the bedroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen. The soothing sound of the waves will lull you to sleep at night.
This Balinese home was built in 2004 from materials shipped in from Indonesia. The same builder erected three other Balinese homes all next to each other, creating a very beautiful stretch of architecture. The house is made entirely of wood, stone, and tile. There is no sheetrock or paint anywhere. The house is extremely peaceful and comfortable.
Since we are planning on being regular visitors ourselves, and because we would like for you to to do the same, and tell all of your friends about this gem, we did our best to furnish it as nicely as we could. The house has all brand new teak and bamboo furniture, new king-size tempurpedic mattress, fully-equipped kitchen with high end appliances, granite countertops, and even Henkels knives. You will enjoy the walk-in river rock shower, the high thread count 100% cotton sheets, and the extra fluffy towels.
We searched all over the Big Island to find the very best location to buy a Hawaiian home, and while I am sure this is a personal preference issue, we like Kehena Beach more than any other area of the island. This is not the tourist area. In fact, most tourists never come here. There is no traffic, and while the east side of the island is considered the wet side, Kehena Beach gets much less rain than any other area nearby. Its a magical little pocket!
Although not touristy, there is still much to do. Two doors down from us is a retreat center, Ramshala, with yoga classes, Watsu Massage in a heated pool, and occasionally, live music. About two miles down the "red road" (before the road was paved, it was made from red cinder) is another retreat center called Kalani. Here you will find classes, workshops, a restaurant, and a huge dance floor for Sunday morning "ecstatic dance." Sunday afternoons there is live music and dancing on Kehena Beach.
Further down the red road from Kalani is Mackenzie State Park and Isaac Hale Park. This later park has swimming, surfing, and a hidden warm pool set in the jungle only a two minute walk from the beach. A little further down the road is another large warm pool, tidal pools, and the Champagne Pond.
Pahoa is the closest town with several fine restaurants, a natural health food store, and a good supermarket. On Sundays there is a flea market just north of Pahoa. Of course, Hilo is the biggest city on the island and is only about a 30 to 35 minute drive. Twice a week there is a fruit and vegetable market, two movie theaters, many good restaurants, and lots of interesting shopping opportunities.
