Just returned from a quick 'pick me up' long weekend in the sun. Needed a break after the stress of Christmas and from the cold and had a fantastic few days in the warm again. Lovely walks, lunch in the garden and oranges off the tree outside my bedroom door! Just what I needed and have booked another 4 day break in a couple of months. Thanks

Owner response: So pleased that you enjoyed your long weekend visit. This is a lovely time of year with the winter sun and the fresh oranges and lemons. The Avacado tree should be in fruit on your next visit! Look forward to seeing you again in a couple of months.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay during August and September 2012. The villa is beautifully decorated and the moorish architecture is stunning. The huge outside area and gardens are well looked after and also stunning. With the amazing views and lovely swimming pool it was sometimes difficult to motivate ourselves to get out to see the surrounding area! Zoe and Nigel were fantastic hosts and provided us with all of the local knowledge we needed. All in all a fantastic place to stay and enjoy this lovely part of Spain. We hope to be back very soon.......!

A very charming arab style house in a very pleasant garden.  With fresh orange juice  every morning, the shade of the olive trees and the swimming pool in the afternoon, we had a wonderful time with our 2 kids at Zoé and Nigel 's place. The place has a direct view on the mountains.  Crystal clear sky in the evening make it all the more enjoyable. Thanks to Zoe who found a French speaking nanny to look after our kids we could even escape to Granada one evening. We strongly recommend SouthofGranada. Sophie & Stephane

My daughter and I spent a few days in Orgiva, at Zoe and Nigel's beautiful place. The flat was perfect for our needs and the view from the terrace is truly magical. The garden with its swimming pool and numerous lemon and orange trees ( unfortunately there were not ready when we stayed ) is very pleasant. The weather was mediocre but it didn't matter as we did a lot of touring (to the coast Granada, the little towns in the Alpujarras). Orgiva is a nice place to explore from and has numerous restaurants and shops. We loved La Barraka (vegetarian, organic food available, take away possible), the various organic shops (we identify 4 shops !..) to buy fresh produce from. We loved the area and I will be back with my husband in the near future. Expect an inquiry from me soon. All the best, Emma and Roselyne

After a very busy year, to arrivie at Zoe and Nigel's was like walking into a little piece of Eden. We were looking for walks, tapas bars with great tapas, menu del dia, pretty little villages, local markets, a place to read and unwind. We certainly found it and more. From our arrival we received the warmest welcome from Zoe and Nigel and nothing was too much trouble. The location was perfect, the grounds and pool were so tranquil. We were slightly confused by the website as to which part of the building we would be staying in but when we walked out onto our little balcony and took our first glass of wine watching the sun going down all confusion slipped away! We were looking for real Spanish food and atmosphere. Lucky for us there was a fiesta on the weekend we arrived. Great feeling to be part of it all. If you really want a Spanish experience, then the four corners bar was fantastic. Great tapas too. The 3 White Villages were definitely worth a visit and great views from the very top. We spent a day at the beach in Maro which was really lovely. Lunch at the great little beach shack and swimming in the crystal clear waters. We possibly could have done more but it was the balance between relaxing and doing. Think we hit it just right. If we had to give any constructive feedback then I would say a couple of reading lamps would be useful, floor plan on the website for the accommodation, more inside knowledge on really good tapas bars, icecube tray oh and a garlic crusher! That said, you only need to ask and Zoe and Nigel are only too happy to provide, inform or whatever you need. Highly recommended and we have done to several of our friends. Imagine picking juicy figs, plump pommegranates and walnuts straight of the trees (season allowing of course), walking in such spectacular countryside (words are hard to describe it), fruit and veg in abundance. We would love to return. Thanks both for Cortijo El Castano..

The perfect villa in the perfect location for recharging personal batteries before the onslaught of a British winter. The warmth of Nigel and Zoe's welcome made us feel at home immediately, while the accommodation itself provided the highest standards of modern home comforts (great shower unit!) within a traditional style Spanish cortijo. Ideal spot for spending a week sitting outside doing nothing but enjoy the sun, pool and private garden, appreciating the stunning mountain views...or for getting out and about among the mountains themselves. Surely even five-star places have their little niggles? Nope, we can't think of a single one.

Nigel and Zoe's amazing hospitality is rivalled only by the beautiful oasis that they've created just outside Orgiva. With stunning views of the valley from private patios to a pool that is really as beautiful as the pictures, Cortijo el Castano is truly one of the most amazing places that I've ever stayed. For my fiance and I, it will always hold a special place as it's where we got engaged. Our favourite memory is simple: drinking wine while looking at the most incredible night sky... You can see all the stars! If you're looking for a romantic getaway in the sometimes overpowering heat of the Spanish summer or just a lovely holiday, this is a great place to stay and like us, I'm sure you will soon be planning another trip back to visit. Nigel and Zoe.... We'll see you in a few years with friends in tow. Thanks again for providing us with such a wonderful setting and amazing privacy. We miss the pool every day!

Owner response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday so much that you got engaged here. Yes it can be hot here but as you discovered the pool, the ceiling fans and the air-conditioning ensure that you can make the most of your time in the sun! We look forward to seeing you again.

The perfect holiday to sample the real Spain is staying at the beautiful Cortijo El Castano (apartment and villa). Less than an hours drive from Granada, and located just outside Orjiva, El Castano villa and apartment offer first class luxury located in the magnificant Sierra Nevada mountains. We rented the whole villa and apartment for our family. This worked brilliantly as meant we could all get together around the pool and terraces but had our own spaces to retreat to with full privacy. El Castano is a fabulous cortijo providing everthing you need, with modern facilities and equipment (including air con and central heating!). Because El Castano is off the tourist trail it's worth hiring a car, which then allows you to explore the variety of countryside around. Head up to the mountains to see some of the beautiful villages a world away from modern life, walk along the roman & moorish trails (a real treat if you do it at dawn to watch the sun rise over the mountains), vist the Alhambra or just have a day relaxing by the pool. Zoe and Nigel (owners) are wonderful, they make your holiday feel like a home from home and are always happy to help or suggest things to do. Our stay at El Castano was wonderful, relaxing and a world away from the rat race, we've already booked our next visit!!!

Hi I would just like to say how much we enjoyed our holiday and what a relaxing week we had. The villa accommodation was perfect and worth every penny. So much space and privacy, and a few steps to the pool in the morning, was about as much as we felt like doing half the time! What we didn't realise from your website (and i guess photos cannot show everything) is that the backdrop of the gardens and pool area is absolutely stunning- the huge dramatic mountain range view is something that you don't see often, and the scenery, amongst other aspects is something that we will definitely wont forget! We were so pleased with our choice and hope to be back again soon for another 'chill out' holiday!Thank you from all of us.' I noticed that the ad promoting the villa doesnt reveal that its so close to the pool (although I guess you would have to say that it may be shared use with a few other guests, depending on other bookings). As there was no photo of the pool and no detail of it, some holiday makers may assume that there is no pool? See you in 7 weeks!

My family spent the better part of a week at apaprtment Castano and loved every minute. Zoe and Nigel couldn't have been better hosts. They were great while we were planning our trip with information on the property and local attractions and always available while there to help. Our kids really enjoyed the pool, gardens and games and it was a great relaxing location in the middle of a long Spain holiday. Having come from the US for this trip we couldn't have been happier.

Our stay in the apartment Castano was simply perfect. The apartment was beautifully fitted out, the garden was a delightful place to relax and we very much enjoyed walking in the immediate area which is so peaceful. Waking in a morning to the calls of the Hoopoes is to be in another world. We can truly recommend a holiday in this beautifully restored villa for anybody wanting to relax away from the busy day to day world.

We have now had a few stays with Zoe and Nigel and this is a fantastic place to rest up and relax in the midst of what is a beautiful mountian valley. They are tremendous hosts and make sure that everything is ok for their guests. Accomodation is very high standard, cleaner than most hospitals, with great gardens, space to play around,BBQ, and a lovely pool. The area is SO QUIET you can hear yourself breathe. Beautiful birds dance in the sky and the bleat of the sheep on the hills add to the views from the house. Surrounded by lovely mountain villages this is great for walking or exploring in the car. Location to airports is excellent. We have come down from Granada and up from Malaga and not much more than 1 hour is all you need. Gives you the chance to combine the best of the coast and the in land area from one base. Even if you want a round of Golf, or to Ski, this place is well placed. Best of all,,,,just to eat,,,,, pop into the local places to try real spanish food at local prices. Brilliant !!!! We will be returning,,,,of course.

My family and I stayed at this wonderful property for the first week in January 2009. I can't recommend it enough. Every detail was perfection - the warm Moorish courtyard with wonderful authentic tiles, large heated outdoor swimming pool surrounded by trees which was inviting even in January and a cosy log fire at night. The orchard was full of oranges and lemons which our hosts made into jams & preserves, cakes & fruit drinks (which were served at breakfast and later with tea and locally made bread). We explored the surrounding area in the daytime, on foot, horseback and on bicycles, and returned home to enjoy comfortable and relaxing evenings where our hosts were on hand to help with planning the next day's activities or just to chat about local characters, folklore and attractions. If you want a holiday in the mountains in a rural location which isn't too far from Granada and less than an hour from the coast, I'd highly recommend this property. VJT

Owner response: It was lovely to meet you all and glad you were able to fit so much in during your week here. The pool, though always looks inviting and because the weather can very often be up to 25 degrees during the day, you are forgiven for thinking the pool was heated! The beauty for us about this area is that Granada is only 1 hour away and the beach half an hour, Look forward to seeing you all again next time.

Some how we managed to arrive at about 1pm. If Nigel was thrown by this he didn't show it, and made us feel at home from the start, eg cup of tea, swimming pool made ready. There was even table tennis! On his recommendation we drove out to Pampaneira in the Alpujarras for an evening meal which was excellent value - a stunning drive and village. Excellent accomodation with spotless rooms and a beautiful garden. We would love to have stayed longer but a tight schedule prevented this. Highly recommended.

It's always a good sign when you feel you could stay for another week which was how we felt on this, our 3rd visit, to this property. This time we stayed in the villa on the ground floor whereas previously we'd been in the apartment upstairs. We loved the villa because of its direct access to a private garden with loungers, hammock and outdoor terrace. It was very chilled out and a perfect place if you like a quiet break but with plenty to visit if you get bored. The pool and garden alone (not to mention English TV!) are a complete delight. Coming back again!

Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Owner response: I was confident that you would enjoy the villa as much as you have enjoyed the apartment for the last 2 visits, which was why on your third visit I suggested a change. Both places have their advantages and I am so glad that you have experienced them both. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Nigel and Zoe

We stayed at the villa in September with my eight year old son. The accommodation was spotless and Nigel and Zoe were very welcoming. We arrived in the early evening after a long drive and my son was delighted to be able to jump straight in the pool! We only stayed one night, as we were breaking our journey before flying home the next day, but we wished we could have stayed longer. We spent a very relaxing evening outside, as it was still very warm, and Nigel helped my son pick grapes, which he was very impressed with! I would have no hesitation in recommending the apartment, and we hope to return for a longer visit.

Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

Owner response: We look forward to seeing you all again here really soon. Maybe during the season when you can pickeither pomegranates, peaches, almonds, walnuts, oranges or lemons from the trees, your son would be even more impressed with that!

The description on the web site with regard to location layout and amenities was spot on in some ways under stated as the whole holiday experience was very enjoyable The layout of the property and the views it commands encourage you to relax and get into the spanish way - making it difficult to leave What stood out most was the attention to detail and the excellent quality of the accomodation - 5* -equivalent to a Parador!. The propert was clean and well maintained and the owners very friendly and welcoming. I have and will recommend Villa Castano only to discerning people who deserve such a treat.

Owner response: We agree with you that the views etc make it difficult to leave - this is why we have trouble leaving even for a short time! Thank you for the comments made about our place in particular, we do so enjoy it when people appreciate and enjoy the effort we have put in to make a perfect holiday retreat. Zoe and Nigel

Based upon recommendation from some friends, we decided to stay at Zóe and Nigel's stylish holiday accommodation during the earlier part of this year (2008). Without a doubt, this was the best holiday accommodation we have stayed at in over 30 years of travelling through Europe. Not only were our rooms spotlessly clean but the decor was a fresh as portrayed in the photographs we had seen on the web site. It was as though our every need had been anticipated, and because we were travelling with my 90 year old father, various extras were added during our stay. At no extra cost to us, Nigel added grab rails and also purchased a small chair for him to sit on in the shower stall. Both Zóe and Nigel worked hard at ensuring that our stay with them was as enjoyable as it could be. Nothing was too much for them and we were treated like royalty! Their local knowledge was extremely useful as well and we were given directions to many interesting places as well as local restaurants and shops. We will certainly return, and have been telling all of our family and friends about this unique holiday experience.

This is by far the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. If you’re just looking for a relaxing break in the sun or hoping to enjoy the daily street markets and sample the excellent food - apart from the wonderful local seafood, Granada offers spectacular mountain scenery and romantic towns with castles set in the hillside, yet it is easily accessible by motorway from both Malaga and Granada airports. I recommend this place to anyone who appreciates the finer things in life and/or Golf.

Our experiences at Nigel and Zoe's villa is everything we look for in a holiday, with stunning views both inside and out, the cleanliness and comfort of the finest hotel, and the peace and tranquility of a rest home. Its all about quality and this was right up there, with nothing too much trouble for Nigel and Zoe who were able to give us all the local info we needed too. We particularly liked the private swimming pool and also the local, typically Spanish village of Orgiva.

Your place is more or less like paradise on earth.. so many flowers.. so many roses and fruit trees.. so many birds singing the best they can and such an amazing sky full of big stars.. it was ideal and we enjoyed every bit of our stay in your privalidged "Villa Castano". It overcome any expectation!
