This waterfront property and cottage is home to one of the most spectacular locations on Vinalhaven Island, surrounded by the unmatched wildlife in of The Basin. This is a private getaway.
From the wrap-around deck, watch the seals sunbathe on nearby rocks, and osprey and eagles soar toward treetop perches. This casual cottage is perfect for families, nature lovers, writers, artists, photographers, kayakers, or those just wishing to unwind.
Vinalhaven residents respect The Basin as the most natural, undeveloped area where natural forests meet ocean, and nature abounds. They know this peaceful location supports wildlife today, much as it did twenty-five years ago. Visitors can explore the Basin by kayak and thrill at the unmatched wildlife up close. Each adventure brings new discoveries, all the while surrounded by unmatched beauty.
The Basin Cottage is located on Granite Island, just two miles from "downtown" Vinalhaven. Access to Vinalhaven is by Maine State Ferry Service daily, then by your car, or bike, or a leisurely walk along winding island roads. This Basin Cottage property, adjacent to 45 acres of protected forestland, is the only property on Granite Island with waterfront access to The Basin.
The cottage was built in 1997 and has recently been updated for casual comfort. The cedar shingled cottage has a ranch style floor plan, including two private bedrooms, sleeping six guests total. The large beadboarded bathroom contains a full shower, comfort height toilet, granite covered cherry vanity, and a full size washer and dryer.
The balance of the cottage living area contains a spacious open floor plan with a full kitchen, eating area and large living room complete with a wood burning Vermont Casting stove. Two large picture windows and three sliding glass doors provide spectacular water views from anywhere in the kitchen, living area, and master bedroom.
A wide 80-foot long deck wraps around two sides providing unobstructed views of the Basin’s teeming wildlife, plus the ever-changing beauty as the sun rises and sets. The deck area can also be accessed directly from the master bedroom or through either of the two sliding glass doors in the living room. Walk from the deck down steps onto the large lawn leading to the shoreline.
The quaint 'downtown' of Vinalhaven offers something for everyone. Stop at the Lobstermen’s Co-Op to buy fresh lobster for dinner. Stroll into Annabelles for ice cream or coffee. The grocery store has just been expanded, and can provide most everything one requires. Bring your children to 'Go Fish' for old time penny candy or to find a special gift. Enjoy a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner at one of several restaurants.
The island also has several fresh water quarries, safe for swimming, or sunbathing. Pack a picnic and enjoy any of the numerous nature preserves, private trails, Brown’s Head Lighthouse, or views from the top of Tip-Toe Mountain. There are many more natural treasures to explore and capture with magnificent memory making photos.

Policies: Adults and children welcome. NO PETS. Outdoor smoking only. Check-in time is 2 pm SATURDAY. Check-out time is 10 am SATURDAY. All supplies including linens and towels are provided.
Deposits: Once you have agreed to lease this property, a property lease will be sent to you. The property will be placed on hold for seven (7) days awaiting your return of the signed lease with the 50% deposit. The balance in full should be received thirty (30) days prior to the start of the lease.
