Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1999

We have loved traveling to Italy for more than 20 years. We bought our house 13 years ago. We wanted to buy a house in Italy while we were young so that we can spend more time there when we retire. Now we cherish every moment we spend at our house with our daughter, seeing her experiencing growing up with Italy being a big part of her life. We love the people of Cortona, the amazing beauty all around, the culture, the cuisine and our house. Everyone that stays in our house tells us that it changed their lives and we are so happy to share our special feelings for our house and for Italy and Cortona with others.

Why the Owner Chose Cortona

We looked at three houses in the Cortona area and the moment we drove up to our house we knew it was the one. The breathtaking views of Cortona and the Valley below. The house is a perfect size for 4-6 people and is surounded with olive groves on all sides. The house has the perfect feel of being in the Tuscan countryside with the quiet and beauty all around but the convenience of being only a 5 minute drive to the center of Cortona with all the activities that Cortona has to offer. It also is in such a great location to explore many other Tuscan towns.

The Unique Benefits of this House

You will get to experience what it really feels like to live in Italy, having your own house as a base to explore the region around but getting to return "home" at the end of the day to watch the tuscan sun set on the patio. You will get to know our tuscan neighbors who are our caretakers and the hospitality that they will show to you.

5 Months in Tuscany

Guest: R&M (Victoria, B.C. Canada)
Date of Stay: 06/18/11 Review Submitted: 11/17/11

"Il Castagno boasts a magnificent view and comfortable and spacious accommodations and it delivers. We had the opportunity to spend five months in this lovely villa during a sabatical from our work. Perched on a hillside overlooking the valley below, the villa is located perfectly near the lovely hill town of Cortona and within driving distance of dozens of other Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns which can easily be explored in day trips. You can visit Montepulciano, Pienza, Panicale, Castiglione del Lago, Assizi, Florence or even Rome on day trips. You can drive or use the convenient train system, the station for which is conveniently located nearby at either Terontola or Camucia. Our evenings were often spent on the terrace, enjoying the panoramic view of the entire Val di Chiana and Cortona nearby as well as glorious sunsets. It is hard to envision a more splendid view. The villa is spacious and well appointed, including everything you need for full service cooking. Modern conveniences such as air conditioning, ice on demand from the full size refrigerator and a dishwasher and clothes washer make living in an authentic Italian historic home easy and comfortable. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms make having family or hosting guests a breeze. The beds are of high quality and the villa is furnished and decorated in traditional style. The living room has a large stone fireplace and 40" flat screen TV for relaxation and entertainment. We had numerous guests visiting us during our stay and the villa`s facilities and layout accommodated these arrangements very well. The rose garden, lemon trees and olive trees surrounding the villa provide additional beautiful Italian touches to this property. There are many trails and hiking routes directly accessible from the villa with undeveloped hills and countryside just waiting to be explored. The villa location does require a vehicle as local shopping, restaurants and groceries are located in nearby Camucia about 3 to 4 kilometres away, with the nearby hilltown of Cortona about 5 kilometers away. For a traditional Italian restaurant meal at a local restaurant, the nearby La Tuffa located in the small community of Ossaia about 1 1/2 kilometer away can be walked to on those pleasant Italian evenings. In short, Il Castagno is the perfect place to relax in comfort and enjoy all that Tuscany has to offer."

A perfect place to be in Tuscany! Near everything yet very private.

This beautiful Tuscan villa was the highlight of our stay in Italy. everything was just perfect the villa, the view, breezes, flowers We just can't say enough about this wonderful place except that we don't want to leave. Cooking was a joy in the beautiful kitchen, the fireplace so cozy at night, grilling on the terrace overlooking Cortona and the countryside. The bed's and bath's are perfect right down to the towel warmers! Isolina and Gioviane, the caretakers were wonderful and anything we needed we had, including their homemade wine and lemonchello which they shared with us. The directions were easy to follow, the road easy to drive and a great walk each day. Thank you Leisl and Danny for sharing your piece of Heaven. We can't wait to return.

The most beautiful dream!!!

Guest: Danelli (Aspen, Colorado, USA)
Date of Stay: 10/15/10 Review Submitted: 10/26/10

This was our third time staying at this property. We hope to come back this summer for a fourth! (we are addicted to your place!). Each time is better than the last! The beautiful winding road to this little slice of heaven makes me tear up every time. It is a magical place. The farmhouse is perfectly decorated with antiques. (love the new lighting fixtures!) The views are stunning. Staying in this house is like living in a dream. We cooked, we drank wine, we visited many of the beautiful little towns all around the area. The caretakers, Giovanni and Isolena greeted us with smiles and remembered us from our previous visits. She even brought us a lasagna! The beautiful town of Cortona is close and visible from the house. The sunset views from the front of the house are amazing. The house is easy to get to and I was happy to see they paved the little road up to the house! I will never forget the first time we saw the house. It seemed like it was too good to be true. Thank you for all your help every time we stay there, your personal attention and connections in the area to restaurants and wineries made this trip the best ever. I feel like words are so inadequate to truly describe this fairy tail house, and the town of Cortona! Grazie, Grazie, Grazie!!!!

Difficult driving to property

Guest: Eagle Eyed (Redmond, OR, USA)
Date of Stay: 10/12/10 Review Submitted: 10/25/10

Farm house was just ok -- lighting was poor. Road to get to the house was challenging and dangerous. Would not recommend this property to any except the most adventurous.

Owner response:For 12 years and over 200 guests staying at our house we have enjoyed so much hearing from EVERYONE how much they love the house, how special it is to them what a wonderful of a time they enjoyed there. We have had many comment that their time at our house and their trip to Italy changed their lives for the better. The beautiful, country, winding road up to the house is a very typical, tuscan country road that brings you up to the house and as you turn into the driveway breathtaking views await you. Families with all ages of children up to elderly have enjoyed their stay in the house and the setting very much. The house is equipped with new lighting and beautiful tuscan lamps and fixtures. The positive reviews really stand on their own as to a testament on what a wonderful find this house really is.

Our first words were" One week will not be enough!"

What a wonderful experience it was to spend a week at your beautiful villa. This was the perfect setting and perfect place for our Tuscan adventure. The villa more than met the needs of the four of us. We totally enjoyed sitting on the terrace every morning eating breakfast and having coffe while we watched the farmer in the valley below harvesting his crop, saw the train go by in the far distance, listened to the sounds of nature, and contemplated what to do that day. We spent 2 delightful evenings by the fire drinking delicious Cortona wine and eating (more!) pasta. We slept with the windows open! The air was so fresh and clean. The location was perfect for our day trips to Trevi, Todi, Volterra and several other Tuscan towns. And your suggestions for places to eat and things to see were excellent. When our GPS couldn't locate the villa, your directions were right on target! Thank you son much for making this amazing place available to us. Ciao!

Beautiful and charming!!!

Guest: Norma (Miami, Florida, USA)
Date of Stay: 06/02/10 Review Submitted: 07/19/10

Most charming and romantic place we have stayed in. Sunset are gorgeous and people very helpful. This country house is located in the center of Toscany and we toured 18 different towns. Two miles away from the town of Cortona, but a spectacular view of Cortona. Pictures shown does not show all the beauty of this place and the house was very confortable, with all things required for a perfect vacation. If you like cooking, Saturday's market place in Cortona is great for buying organic products, cloths and gifts to bring back home. I loved strolling in Cortona every afternoon to have their great gellatos and people watching. You will enjoy it.

Beautuful Views

Guest: Dave (Kernersville, North carolina)
Date of Stay: 06/18/10 Review Submitted: 06/30/10

Most exciting place we have stayed. Cannor adequately describe the beauty of the views. Nicely rennovated. Gorgious views of Cortona and surroundings. Comfortable with excellently furnished kitchen. Beds very comfortable. Neighbors very friendly and helpful. Comfortable for 4 but 2 can sleep on pullout. Owner most helpful in suggesting local events and restaurants. Less than 10 minutes from Cortona central but you must have car to get there. If you want more details ask the owner, most informative. Highly recommend a stay at this central location. Easy to take day trips to Sienna and all small hill towns.
