This spacious house is surrounded by working farms that produce the fine wines of the Piceno area. It is sited on the side of, and within a short walking distance to, the charming hill town village of Spinetoli with its cafe and square, small shops, and the remains of an ancient castle that overlooks the Adriatic Sea. Every window looks out on views of the vineyards lining the steep slopes of the surrounding hill towns with their ancient castles clustered on top. Owned by an American artist, the walls are decorated with art that depicts the local countryside.
This house is not isolated, but is among a community of farmers that produce the grapes sold as wine on the Common Market. Spinetoli is so identified with its grape production that on the second Sunday of every September, it holds its annual grape festival. Locals, dressed in regional garb, dispense wine from a parade of grape carts.
The house has the additional advantages of being within a short drive to San Benedetto del Tronto, an international seaside resort on the Adriactic, and the Sibillini Mountains whose highest peak, Mt. Vittore, reaches 2476 meter. Surrounding the house are numerous hilltowns each with its unique castle, tiny winding streets, and magnificent views of the hills that roll gentle to the sea. Close by is the ancient (11th Century) and historic city of Ascoli Piceno. As the cultural center of the area, Ascoli provides fascinating walks through medieval streets dotted with ancient churches, cloisters, bell towers, the remains of early Roman occupation, and a magnificent square built from travetine, a distinctive stone of the region.
Available to rent is the second floor of the house which is fully furnished and completely stocked with linens and cookware. It has two spacious bedrooms (each with a queen-size bed), a single bath (with a tub and shower), a large hall, and a huge kitchen with tiled walls and a large fireplace. The living room has a couch that converts to another queen-size bed and bunk beds that can sleep two children.
Wake to birdsong and church bells close and distant. Smell the grapes ripening, the hay drying, and the farmer's cooking on the outdoor brick oven. Sit on the covered terrace and sip the local wine while overlooking the orchard with the fruit of the season there for the picking.
From Rome, Spinetoli is a three or four hour drive over the magnificent Appennine Mountains to the Adriactic Sea. Bus and Rail transportation is accessible from Ascoli Piceno or San Benedetto del Tronto. Additional Photos available upon request.
