Harbor Island in the background. Dock and mooring on this side of Island.
Location: Brooksville, Acadia, Maine, USA (Near Deer Isle, Blue Hill and Acadia National Parks)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)
The privately-owned, 25-acre Harbor island is nestled just outside of picturesque Bucks Harbor Marina in the coastal town of South Brooksville. The snug village is known by many from the late Robert McCloskey's book 'One morning in Maine'. It is an island retreat without bridges or cars or any other neighbors except the wild kind. Nothing but blue sky and blue ocean surround it. For the right person, this is an ocean paradise where mother nature still rules. Guests of the island must have some boating skills and an independent, adventurous attitude. Do not look for luxury here. This is a sublimely natural place with gasp-worthy views where the ocean stretches forever. It offers a change of pace so complete that it is almost spiritual.
One reaches the island by their own boat or one of the two provided for guests. It is easiest to depart from the Marina which is only a stone's throw from the back of the island. Once the island is reached, a mooring, dock and float are available for the boat. A broad, wooded path loops through the quiet forest offering unsurpassed natural beauty around every corner. At its end, on the South side of the island is a modest, unpretentious cabin on the shore. Built in 1967, the cabin is fully-functional with running water, a generator, wood stove and gas appliances. Guests need to be extremely conservative with all its resources. There is no phone, there is no TV, but there is 100 years of family history here and a 1000 reasons to forget work.
Whether you come with your grandchildren or to woo your life's love, one can not stay on the island without falling under its magical spell. Life is a Journey with some rather exquisite rest stops along the way...this is definitely one of them!
