Castellina in Chianti farmhouse description
Casa Pineta (8 - 13 persons)
(approx. 200 sqm) - 4 BR, 4 BA, 1 large live-in kitchen with pantry, livingroom ( fireplace ,sat tv, dvd, cd, wifi, ) diningroom, stunning roofterrace, very large terrace with loggia and bbq, , 2 community parking lots.
'Casa Pineta' is the second oldest house on the estate of Poderi Val Verde. It was built in various steps over a time period of at least 350 years, repeatedly extended as needs for more space arose. Therefore the various levels within the house that create a particular flair. Once it stood separate from the neighboring 'Casa Acacia' - but then the gap was closed - thus creating its stunning, unusual roof terrace. At the beginning of the 19th century the bread oven with vault ceilings was added, which we now use as breakfast room.
This house, like all others, was constructed with quarystones by the farmers when clearing woodlands and macchia slopes to prepare land for vineyards and olivegroves .Stones that traditionally were use for building houses or terrassed-walls. Its original use was as living quarters for the farmers and workers. Prove of this give the typical ceilings, built with handcut oak beams, some of the original cottofloors, narrow doors, the old fireplace that people used to literally sit in to warm themselves, the original sandstone sink and many more little signs, that we shall gladly point out to you. Stair and doors sills of local grey sandstone show obvious signs of wear - signs that thousands of feet leftover the last few hundred of years.
This farmhouse was renovated some years ago and retouched in 2012 , the typical Tuscan structure of old oak beam ceilings and terracotto floors remained intentially untouched. All rooms are handpainted in the typical warm colours of a Tuscan country home : shades of yellow, orange and green. this and some pieces of typical 'arte povera' furnitures give you the feeling of living in an ambiente of ...once upon the time ....
More then 200 sqm offer plenty of space for 8 to 13 persons. Access to the house by some steps up to the diningroom. To the left is the large livingroom with old fireplace. From there to the right the spacious kitchen with additional dining space and pantry. The kitchen is equipped with a 3ring gas stove+ 1 electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster, American & Italian coffeemaker , etc. etc.
To the left 4 steps lead up to BR 1, a cosy small suite with a queensize doublebed and large ensuite BA (shower/wc) with washing machine and dryer. On ground level bedroom no. 2 with 3 single beds and ensuite bathroom (shower/wc.) Also on ground level no. 3, the largest one, with 2 large single beds as a double as well as a small queen size bed. Here the private ensuite BA has a i tub with integrated shower and wc. bedroom windows with mosquito screens
Passing the dining room straight ahead you enter into a small reception area with a corner fireplace. To the right some steps down is the spacious BA no. 4 with very large double bed as well as a single sofa bed. There is of course also a private ensuite bathroom with shower/wc. From this room one may access directly to the roofterrace.
Straight ahead from the reception area again some steps lead down to the small summer kitchen, that may be converted into a seperate bedroom with single sofabed. Large glass window doors open completely to the stunning roofterrace that towers like an eagles nest overlooking in an 180° angle valley and swimmingpool area
In front of the house the very large sun terrace with a spacious covered patio for alfresco dining. A linden tree gives shade and small lemon and orange trees give the typical mediteranian flair. Terrace and loggia are very well equipped with garden furniture as well as a barbeque grill. Also here is a magnificent – almost 300° view - onto the surrounding hills, forest, maddows as well as the garden park and pool area.
This house may be even enlarged by integrating the small downstairs suite “Il Rifugio” (sleeping 2 pers.).
Enjoy the sunset in complete silence from your terrace, garden furniture, sunbeds as well as a bbq. Gaze onto onto the extended gardens, the romantic creek and the surrounding maddows and vast macchia covered hills of this private property of more then 76 ha. Start your hiking and biking directly form your doorsteps on well marked trails.

- Poderi Val Verde - an authentic farm estate from the 16th century – located only 2 km from the wine town of Castellina in Chianti and within 1 hours drive to most famous sights of Tuscany is a real “living” farm – with farm and court yard animals , free roaming dogs and cats - in a surrounding and live style of “once up the time” . Its a place for the individual travellers, looking for something different – for the feeling of solitute, peace and untouched nature. For people that like good original food (on-site dinners and cookery classes) and good wines. For people that like to explore the country side by bike or by foot and next to visiting the countless cultural sights will also find time to attend one of the many cultural events such as opera, concerts, etc. For people that include in the plans a visit to the many Thermal springs and spas as well as the beaches and marble caves of the Versiglia. For people that enjoy travelling in the colder months when Tuscany seems to hibernate into the past. When in restaurants you find only locals and tourists are greeted with a welcoming smile , museums and other cultural places are empty and the Chianti belongs to only you. When the air is heavy with the smell of the many fire places, the new young wine , the freshly pressed olive oil, grilled game meat and the famous bistecca . Poderi Val Verde (Farmhouses in the green valley) was restored in 1998 and retouched in 2012. It was left itentially rustic – original fire plces, cotto floors, beams, roofs and many little architectural particularities that mark centuries of living in this place. We are fully aware that with this we are going against the usual main stream of modern design. When you step into our accommodations – you seem to step back into the past – rooms , setting and furnishing are according to the “Arte Povera” – as it used to be – as you saw it in films such as “under the Tuscan sun” or in “Romeo and Juliette” - but functional as in any modern house. Shady rose-covered loggias and sunny terraces with nices views are part of this all. As most really old farm houses it was built in a large, open, sun-filled valley, thus protected from cold north winds and wet fogs, ventilated by warm south winds in the afternoon, with pleasant cool night temperatures due to the surrounding macchia and woods and with unlimited supplies of fresh well water. The famous ancient “mules trail” passed through here – mules transported salt from the salt mines of sicily to the north – trails that always followed the course of water and wells and developed into important traffic venes. Prove of this are the many monastries and cloisters and farm houses that you find along this old road, which i salso part of our trekking “network”. Here you can spend your dream vacation – right in the heart of Tuscany – the Chianti Classico” - only a few miles from Florence and Siena – in a region of vineyard covered hills, silvery olive groves, vast forests and colourful macchia slopes - and admidst hidden ancient farm houses guarded by cypresses and towering pinetrees Surrounded by more then 2ha of wellcared parklike garden – unlike any other you might find - sits the imposing guest house complex which is dived in 3 apartments (2-4 Pers.) , and/or 2 semiattached houses 'Casa Pineta (8-13 pers.) + 'Casa Acacia (6-8 pers.) as well as the lovely small villetta 'Casa Capannina ' (4- 6 pers.). The community pool of 5,5x11 m with extended leisure areas and surrounding gardens as well as sports facilities is open as of mid may . During the cooler months you may use the a small covered (not heated) pool of the property owner, the only of its kind in the area. ...moreless

Wonderful Location From Which To Explore
Wonderful Location From Which To Explore
Our friends rented this property for a month and invited their friends to come visit. We stayed for two weeks and thought it was a great location from which to explore the local region. During our stay we visited a lot of the little hill towns in Chianti but also ventured to other locations such as San Gimignano, Monterigionni, Montalcino, Siena, Florence, Lucca, Assisi and Ravenna. The property has a wonderful rustic charm and worked out very well for the various groups who came to visit; each of us had our own bedroom and bathroom.....very nice! It was also nice to experience the variety of animals on the property including cats, dogs, Cameroon sheep, a peacock, chickens, etc. The local town of Castellina is very nice and had some of the best gelato we've every had. Would definitely recommend this property to others

a month of tuscan beauty + joy ....
“A month of Tuscan beauty & joy at Poderi Val Verde” Reviewed September 28, 2013 NEW For our 30th anniversary, we decided to rent Casa Pineda within Poderi Val Verde's verdant grounds. Our plan was to have 3 other couples stay for a week in one of the 4 bedrooms, with our dearest friends coming and going each week. Each bedroom was different and we had fun picking out which room best suited each couple. Each time we had guests arrive, we watched their eyes widen and all remarked that it exceeded their expectations, as it has us! Our host Ulrike has been invaluable in her recommendations and her help with anything we asked about. If you tell her what your interests are, she will likely have something to direct you to. I'm a sculptor, so she suggested the sculpture garden in the middle of the forest in Viagliale, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. She is also great at recommendations for other non-tourist spots and all the best, most romantic restaurants. Another wonderful treat are the sweet animals she has that freely roam the grounds...especially welcome when you have left your furry "kids" at home. We bought several of the jams she has in her cellar from fruit trees on the grounds and ALL were wonderful. As we had a handful of great chefs staying with us, we only had a few meals that she offers, but what we did have that was cooked by her was delicious. If you are lucky enough to come and stay here, you might ouch out and get her wild boar in plum sauce! It was out of this world! We are already planning our return trip! Thanks, ULRIKE, Toto, Joilla, all the kitties (outdoors only, so no allergy fears), the goats (actually Cameroon sheep that look so much like goats even Ulrike calls em goats!), chickens, geese, and a peacock! Another favorite memory is a group of us trying to catch an errant ewe to reunite with its mama. Every day a new magical experience awaits! Treat yourself to a stay that is unparalleled by any other trip you could imagine! The town of Castellina is picturesque and not usually overrun with tourists. 25-30 minutes west is the town of Poggibonsi, from which you can easily and inexpensively reach Sienna, Firenze Rome etc. A great central location. 2 hrs to Assisi is well worth the time and its an easy and well-marked road back to your home away from home! Ciao! Room Tip: The rooms with the best views are 3&4. The best room for mobility impaired is either 3 or 2, alt... See more room tips

“Absolutely fabulous” Reviewed September 5, 2013 NEW We have recently had a week with family, including 4 children aged 3 to 11, and the whole experience was superb. Location is quiet but close enough to shops, restaurants etc and Siena which is beautiful is only half an hours drive. The accommodation is gorgeous, very peaceful, you can only hear animals & birds. The hostess with the mostess, Ulrike, goes out of her way to welcome you and make sure everything is in order and nothing is too much trouble. One of her 'welcome dinners' is a must as she is a fabulous cook and host. Could not fault this place and we will definitely be returning in the future. Many thanks Ulrike for making our holiday.xx

“Tuscan Villa Paradise” Reviewed September 5, 2013 NEW What an experience! After planning for a year for our dream trip to Tuscany in July , It was finally here! In great anticipation of our 2 week stay we arrived at Poderi Val Verde. We were instantly in awe of the countryside, the gorgeous grounds, the rustic nature of this working farm, the animals freely roaming and crooning their sounds, the herb and flowers gardens so unstructured and beautiful, the beautiful refreshing pool, our very awesome( not modern) 300+ yr old farmhouses(s) “Casa Pineta” and “Casa Acacia”. Our connecting houses were perfect for ten of us ranging in ages from 24-72. The twenty somethings had private bedrooms downstairs where they were able to chill , do yoga, play guitar etc....with separate entrances/patios to come and go. We had more than enough beds and every room had its own bathroom. The beds are harder than in the US but oddly enough I discovered that I liked these better than my own.. If they are too hard Urlike is quick to accomodate to make you comfortable. Most of our group used the farm as an anchor location to rest, relax , swim, hike, visit local wineries, go into Rada, Castellana, Pogabonsi, eat Gelato(sometimes twice day), shop, hike, enjoy the wine, catch the local vibe , ride our vespas . Frequently we would venture off a day or two to Rome, Venice, Cinque Tera, Croatia, Florence. No matter where we scurried off too we always looked forward to returning “home” to relax at the farmhouse. Urlike is a passionate and wonderful host. She is one of a kind and definitely a big piece of the flavor of this farm. Her suggestions, sense of humor , and direct style are who she is. She comes from a sincere place of her wanting her guests to have the most memorable and fulfilling vacation possible. She has many ‘suggestions’ and “connections” and shares a wealth of information about farm life, food, Italy/Tuscany region, activities, transportation, restaurants, shopping, and her wisdom on life in general. She is passionate and hard working and truly loves this farm, region, and her guests. My advice would be to ask her for suggestions in advance or when you first arrive. As other reviews have mentioned Urlike’s cooking is wonderful! Cooking class was a blast and Highly recommended, lots of wonderful secrets and tips!We enjoyed lots of wine and laughter in the kitchen. We shared our bounty for hours that evening ..... for complete review pls see tripadvisor .......

“Wonderful experience” Reviewed September 1, 2013 We spent two weeks in Poderi Val Verde in Castellina in Chaianti. The grounds were beautiful with lots of blooming flowers and a lovely view of the country side. Urlike our hostess was a delight. Helpful every time we ask for directions, the best vineyards to visit or where the best restaurants were. One of the best nights spend at Poderi val verde was our cooking class, Loads of fun and informative. Jayne Room Tip: because we were a large group we had several interconnecting apartments.

authentic tuscan wedding
“Authentic Tuscan Wedding!” Reviewed September 2, 2013 Thank you , Thank you, Thank you Urlike and staff ! Let me just start by saying our daughter had been dreaming of a Tuscan wedding her entire life and I must tell you it was above and beyond what any of us ever dreamt it would be. It was beautiful and perfect and so authentic in every way. Arranging details from the US was a challenge and you were instrumental in assisting us with every little detail of the wedding, catering, photographers, musicians, chaplain, flowers, table design and decor, location etc....You made yourself available to us and we could not have had this turn out so memorable if it wasn’t for your help and your gorgeous farm for the setting. The location was set on the balcony of Casa Pineta, overlooking the gorgeous grounds and pool of Poderi Val Verde. It was just before sunset and although it sprinkled for a moment , the rain quickly stopped as if it knew there was going to be a wedding. Robbie the resident peacock and a few furry friends added a unique touch to the scene as they gathered with the guests preparing for the ceremony. Our guests sat on red draped chairs surrounded by olive trees / flowers and candles. Sweet musicians serenaded us as the ceremony began. Photographs followed. Some were taken on site at the farmhouse, as well as downtown Castellina, and a nearby vineyard . It was absolutely gorgeous and a photographers and brides dream. The table was set beautifully outdoors on a large farmhouse table. The place settings were a mix of elegant with organic. The Menu was “Magnifico” and completely home prepared and catered by Urlike and staff. We chose the menu and wine selections in advance. The courses were many and executed so beautifully. We were served wines, cheese, bruschetta, olives, bread and farm grown olive oil, fruits, pates, lamb, lasagna, and on and on. We all enjoyed a local made ice cream/cake that was delivered right in time. We sat lavishing outdoors for hours under the moonlight enjoying the festivities, atmosphere, friends and family, music, dancing laughing and crying and drinking and eating. What a celebration!!! And last but not least. We were on a budget. We could not have had anywhere near this kind of memorable experience back home. The cost was 1/4 of what it would have been in the states Urlike was our wedding planner partner as she arranged so many of the vendors and catering and details from afar. for complete review go to tripadvisor

wedding at poderi val verde
My family and friends booked the Poderi Val Verde villa farmhouse for two weeks in July 2013. The villa itself is centrally located in Tuscany, and sits on a lovely 50 acre plus property. Besides a terrific vacation for the 12 of us, Ulrike also helped setup a wedding ceremony for my daughter that was held at the Villa. Everyone was quite comfortable during our stay with, separate bathrooms, 3 kitchens, washer and dryer, and large gathering areas. Even being the middle of the summer we had great evenings there and ate outside often. Ulrike held a wine tasting and cooking class for 6 of us and we had a ball, and one great meal for all of us! With the small town of Castellina in Chianti only minutes away we had everything we needed, and if we couldn't find it, Ulrike supplied it. After having such a great wedding on the property, I'm sure there will be more to come. What a great time we all had and would recommend it highly for your next European vacation!! From Scott. family vacationGuest comment entered by owner
“Family Vacation” Reviewed August 7, 2013 Tuscany was the second week into our family vacation to Italy. After our initial week in Rome, we were looking for a relaxing time in Tuscany. We stayed in Casa Pineta along with another family for a week in mid-July. Like other reviews, if you are looking for bed and breakfast type accomodItions or resort type setting then DON'T stay in Poderi Val Verdi. As Ulrike will tell you, "it's a working farm". STAY if you are looking for a rustic farmhouse (beds are somewhat uncomfortable), quiet evenings, and a place to return to after day trips to the Chianti countryside. Our teenagers loved the pool which was a welcome respite from intense heat during the day. Location is centrally located as Florence and Siena are all within 35 minutes of driving. The town of Castellina is quaint with a well stocked Coop to purchase groceries and sundries. Do get gelato at Antica Delizia. Hubby liked the chocolate combined with black cherry or strawberry. One of the drawbacks is there is not enough in Castellina to visit each evening. Being first time visitors to Italy we were not comfortable driving long distance to return to the villa. You will need a car and download maps of Italy for your GPS. All in all, we would recommend staying at Casa Pineta. We found Ulrike to be very helpful. Stayed July 2013, traveled with family

amazing place to stay for families
“*Amazing* place to stay for families!” Reviewed August 21, 2013 NEW My wife and our 3 children joined a friend, his wife and their child (a total of 8 people) for a beautiful, and incredibly fun, week at Casa Pineta in Poderi Val Verde. The proprietor, Ulrike, is a magnificent hostess who consistently went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was exactly what we wanted--which is to say a farmhouse-style getaway in Chianti. She was on-hand anytime we need anything (more wine!), gave perfect dining recommendations resulting in discounts from some local establishments, and even helped arrange tours and told us the best places to park in our day-trip destinations (e.g., Florence, Sienna, etc.). We opted to go for the daily breakfasts, which I *heartily* recommend. Every day was something a little bit different, coupled with homemade jams and jellies, and different teas (I am a tea drinker, the other adults all had coffees). In fact, Ulrike had some fantastic teas! The accommodations are perfect--Wi-Fi, pool (that we had almost to ourselves anytime we wanted it), walking trails, table tennis, and of course, beautiful scenery! For our family-style vacation, the outdoor Legos, the pool, and the cats were just right. There are plenty of great spots on-property for portraits, and the night sky is clear and bright. I had a great time, with a great hostess, in a great region. What's not to love? We will most definitely be returning. Stayed June 2013, traveled with family

"Fabulous location, breathtaking views, beautiful stone cottages " A most charming hamlet of stone cottages and a main house, set in many acres of Chianti countryside. The main house kitchen is where the cooking lesson took place. We were a little nervous that morning since neither of us had ever been on a cookery course. Katharina Ulrike Eder, the congenial owner & host and also the Cooking teacher soon put us at ease. She said we would be preparing five separate dishes that morning as she put us to work peeling, chopping, stirring. As she supervised, she gave us tips as to easier ways to peel garlic, remove seeds from tomatoes, etc. What a wealth of information we gained in just a few hours. We both felt comfortable and laughed at the fact we had been nervous. In fact it was so much fun. After finishing the five dishes, we went outside where a table was set in the courtyard. Here we were to sample and enjoy the lunch we had just prepared. Our efforts in the kitchen paid off, all was delicious and we have already tried doing these same recipes at home in the Virgin Islands. We wished we had allocated more time with Ulrike in her Kitchen but our two week vacation came to an end far too soon.

About the owner: The German owner Ulrike with her son Fabian (presently in Germany) - both Englishspeaking outgoing and very openminded people that will gladly be of assistance and share their experiences in Italy with their many international guests
Why the Owner Chose Castellina in Chianti:
Was infected with the 'Tusan virus' after my first visit (like so many others) some 30 years ago and after various vacations decided to finally settle in the heart of Tuscany - the Chianti Classico' area. Here I found everything I ever longed for - nature, peace, clean air, good food , fantastic wines and culture of the highest level. After some years I decided to share my experiences (also cooking) with guest from all over the world and opened a rental activity.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
there are few places that are so central to everything, and offer so much - located only 500 m from the main road but in absolute silence of the surrounding nature (the only nature preserve area in the Siena region) - you are closed to most important sights and places of Tuscany - 5 min to the next town, so social contacts are guaranteed - less then 1 hours from the next major airport (Florence) so getting here is no problem - fantastic marked trekking trails starting from your doorstep (stunning nature in winter or spring) , biking of the finest (on the tracks of the Giro d'Italia, golfing with the elite, or simply enjoying a glass of wine, some pecorino cheese on your personal patio, watching deer and wild boar pass by, Tuscan eagles soaring above this magnificant privately owned valley - what can one ask more for
