We stayed here for 10 days for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were looking for a secluded piece of Kauai, away from tourists, close to the Napali Coast. You will find it all here plus more. Loved the property, the views, location, cottages, beach, snorkeling, seclusion, and on and on!!! Great place for anyone looking to get away from the resort style accommodations. Cottages are fully furnished with all you will need to cook and live comfortably, also the 4G cell phone coverage and wifi was a plus as well. Also can't say enough about the grounds keepers/cleaning crew (Aloha Clean) - very friendly, got some good tips, and they do a fantastic job of cleaning. Can't wait to go back!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

The cottages at Hale Makai are a unique way to spend time on the North Shore. The accommodations provide the conveniences of a house - a kitchen, laundry facilities, etc. but the luxury and ambience of a top-rated hotel room. The beach is just a few steps away and you have the option to just sit and enjoy the view or you can take advantage of fantastic snorkeling right there (no need to fight the crowds at Tunnels Beach, which is around the bend). The five cottages are all close together but the way they are arranged makes each one private. Conversely, if you wish to socialize with guests in the other cottages, you have that option as you do run into others coming and going from the beach. We stayed in Cottage #1 and it's extremely private - the furthest removed from any foot traffic by other guests. The only disadvantage with regards to privacy is if you have night-owls in Cottage #5, you may hear them (there is no air conditioning so everyone's windows are open). That said, we never experienced anything egregious in this regard. Cottage #1 doesn't have quite the views of #2 and #3 but you can see the ocean and the view through the palm trees ls lovely. Cottage #1 has the smallest deck of all but has a nice table with a couple of benches for dining. The lawn area and hammock just beyond the deck felt like our own private yard and we spread out to take advantage of this space and expand our view of the waves. The queen-sized bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We didn't find ourselves wanting something that wasn't there ... perfectly appointed for a week at the beach. We plan to go back, which I believe is the best testament of our experience.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Hale Makai Orchid Cottage (#3) was a dream come true. First of all, the north shore of Kauai is magical beyond belief with incredible sunsets and amazing sunrises, the sound of the ocean and the wind in the palm trees at night. We spent evenings on the lanai with amazing views of the beach and ocean beyond while dining on local-caught barbequed fish. The beach was only 40 steps from the cottage with white-ivory sand and the ocean so many shades of blue and turquoise. There was snorkeling and beach gear (provided) to enjoy the nearly private beach. This is NOT your typical resort experience! It’s much, MUCH better. You feel like a part of the island, a local that belongs there. You’re near the end of the road, where it’s quiet, intimate and friendly. The cottage had everything we needed and more... open and airy... well appointed and comfortable. The other guests were warm and friendly people. We were Ohana (family) in the truest sense of the word. GO... you will not be disappointed!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My wife and I honeymooned at the Hanalei Colony Resort (HCR) in 1981. It was a bit smaller, a bit more rustic, and was owned, I think, by Charo; she the latin, blond singer/dancer of yore, made famous by flirting with the audience and announcing herself in her entertainingly broken English as the "coochi coochi" girl. She often performed at the dinner show there on the grounds. What a hoot, and a fine time was had by all. I recall that the '92 Hurricane took it out and this iteration of the HCR now exists in it's place. Fast forward to July, 2012. Because we liked the Hanalei area so much, we booked a cottage @ Hale Makai in the only cottage available due to a last minute cancellation, Hale Makai (#3)...the Honeymoon suite, next door to where the original HCR was 31+ years ago. Was all this a coincidence? No matter. The five private cottages are wonderful, 1st class accommodations that are great for privacy. A wonderful base for experiencing all that the garden isle has to offer. I'd be a little careful, however, about biking to Hanalei from there; part of the road is a little hairy with tight lanes of two way traffic. While the north shore beaches, including those right outside the Hale Makai cottages, can be very windy, we found two that were protected: Ke'e beach at the western end of the road, and Lumahai beach, accessible via a reasonable hike down from the roadway. No sign that we saw, just a bunch of parked cars. Lumahai is towards Hanalei from Hale Makai. Tunnels beach also looked relatively calm, as did Haena Beach Park, both just before Ke'e. Both Ke'e and Haena Beach had toilet facilities. I think Tunnels did, too. Of course, there is always the beach in Hanalei and points further south...or is that east? The grounds of the Hale Makai cottages are nice and somewhat protected from the wind, too, so sunning there for a day, while not a day at the beach, is very close to it. Thanks to Klaus for arranging our unforgettable return to paradise on the north shore...mahaloRecommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Plumeria cottage (no. 1) beginning of August for one week. It was a perfect dream vacation. Once you enter the Hale Makai Cottage property, you find yourself in a wonderful park-like garden, with lots of beautiful flowers, hammocks between palm trees and the fantastic ocean just steps away. The exclusive, very high standard cottage offered everything we needed for our stay. A perfectly equipped kitchen with everything for a wonderful BBQ or dinner on our patio. A bath with a huge bath tub for two, shower, lots of towels for bath and special beach towels. A living and sleeping room with new furniture and everything you need to relax and feel just like home. I loved the little details, such as the fresh flowers sitting next to the soap in the bathroom when we arrived. No need to buy a Kauai Island guide- it was just next to the sofa, right there for us to plan our trip! And there is lots to see on that beautiful island. The best thing is, you basically just have to walk outside your cottage and start discovering the island! The beach is right there, with normally nobody around you. It was a perfect vacation in the Hale Makai cottages and we are already planning our next stay!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, people with disabilities, girls getaway, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We have been to Hale Makai 3 times now and had our last visit this August. With our two teenage kids, we always rent two cottages which provide exactly the buffer zone we need from our kids to ensure a successful and fun family vacation. With a modern kitchen (Viking range stove and a sub-zero fridge), we love cooking or BBQ'ing at Hale Makai and saved a lot of money by going out less. ( Kauai's restaurants are very pricey with Entrees at $22) . My wife and I highly recommend this. We love the furniture in the cottages, everything is well kept up and in great condition. Every time we go there, we are positively surprised by the improvements made to the cottages and to the big park-like garden. The location for us has always been the attraction of this vacation rental; the hedges have grown so high that the grounds feel more private than ever, all you see is the ocean in the front and the ridge of the NaPali to the back. Kauai seemed pretty busy this year, but directly in front of our cottage, there were only very few people on the beach. In fact, every time we went, we basically had the whole beach to ourselves, which definitely feels like the ultimate paradise. Over the years, we also have had many celebrity spotting (including Matt Damon, Pierce Brosnan and Liv Tyler) as this part of the north shore has the most privacy. As we love Kauai and come back time and again, we definitely believe this is the best place to stay on the island. It's a family-run place and Erin, the manager, was very professional super friendly. As in the past, we spent the best family time at Hale Makai without any complaints from our teenagers. We can only recommend this place and hope to be back next summer.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My family stayed at Hale Makai, Cottage #3, in July 2010 and enjoyed every moment. The beaches, which are literally ten steps from our back door, showcased the best snorkeling we found on the island. It is just a 30 minute walk down the beach to Tunnels, but why would we go anywhere else? The area is very private and it makes you feel as though you are the only ones on the island. We visited the Hanalei Dolphin Fish Market and created a wonderful dinner. We would recommend this cottage to anyone who values privacy and value for their dollar.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, people with disabilities, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

Guest Reviews:
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hale Makai Cottages. We felt like we had it all nestled here on the north shore of Kauai and now that we are home its all we talk and dream about. Hale Makai is wonderful: 2 large rooms, a full kitchen and a beautiful porch that we dined on each day. There’s ample space to enjoy your own quiet time, or a nice large common area to just hang out in with the sliding door open listening to the roar of the ocean. In the morning we would get up brew tasty Kona coffee, walk to the beach area, and view the breathtaking sunrises it was a great way to begin every day. Thank you again for a wonderful time. One final note; I’m not the betting type of guy but as soon as I got home I bought my 1st PowerBall lottery ticket, closed my eyes and thought if I win I’m going right back to Kauai (the north shore that is). We came to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary never knowing we would celebrate so much more. The island truly is a paradise and no where is it more evident than the North Shore. Hale Makai allowed us to experience the beauty, serenity and peace that are so much Kauai. We could have seen it from other accommodations but not have experienced it. Our bare feet could not have taken only a dozen steps across lush grass to our own secluded section of the North Shore only at Hale Makai!! The view even from inside is indescribable with pen & paper. Sights and sounds we will never forget! We love it here. Mahalo, Mahalo for everything!
