Roxboro house description
Beautiful four bedroom, three bath home built in 1925 sleeps 9. Ten-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, lavish crown mouldings and trimwork, beautiful beveled glass doors downstairs, 29 windows (most of which are over-sized) with original "ole timey" glass. Fully equipped kitchen just like your home, central AC, warm "old fashioned" radiator heat, big back yard. This home is listed on the local historical registry and is a classic example of 1920's elegance.
The home offers large formal living and dining rooms, as well as library with fireplace, color cable TV, & wireless hi-speed internet, large kitchen with separate breakfast room & cable color TV, guest bedroom with twin beds, bathroom with tub, screened back porch and large front porch with swing. Upstairs there is a wide hallway with 2 spacious bedrooms & a full (tubs with shower) bath on each side of this hallway. However, we converted one of these upstairs bedrooms (6 windows) to a combination Florida Room/Bedroom with cable color TV, sofa, chair, ottoman, & twin bed. The other bed arrangements upstairs are king in one, double in another, & queen in the 3rd.
Reflecting over my first 55 years, very little changed in the house. Maybe a couch, a chair, or some carpet was changed occasionally, but that was it. In 2005, after Dad died & Mom moved to a smaller home, my sister purchased the house to keep it in the family. She asked Kathy & me to help her with the renovations--not that we changed all that much, but the "wow factor" of the end result increased dramatically for all of us. (Kathy & I kept saying, 'boy, it'd be neat to retire here'!) We removed the heavy window drapes, sheers, shades, & much of the wall-to-wall carpet. We repainted the exterior trim, & after removing all wallpaper, we painted the interior walls either beige or taupe w/ white trim. We "stripped" the dark purplish stain off the bannister & newell posts, leaving the beautiful natural hardwood. We installed wooden blinds on the windows & many ceiling fans. We comfortably furnished it leaving lots of uncluttered space. The house became so clean, crisp, bright, & cheerful. It just amazes me now.
Food & Entertainment: Walk 10 minutes along Main Street to historical uptown Roxboro with wonderful museum, quaint shops, restaurants, drug stores, post office, and banks close by. 5-to-15 minutes to 3 grocery stores, fast food, & quality locally owned & operated Steak, Italian, Mexican, & Seafood restauarants. 10 minutes to family entertainment paradise all under one roof--Palace Pointe--20 bowling lanes, 8 movie theatres, rollerskating, video arcade, 7 billiards tables, & food diner. 10-to-20 minutes to 2 large fresh water lakes, Hyco & Mayo. Mayo Park has free boat launch, amphitheatre (bands, plays, free movies), walking trails, wildlife viewing deck, kayak & canoe rentals, playground, sunning, swimming, & great bass/crappie fishing. 5 minutes to tennis courts. 15 minutes to Roxboro Country Club golf. 35 minutes to Durham & Duke University/Hospital, Durham Bulls Minor League Baseball games, & new DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center). 30 minutes to truly world class VIR Road Race Course for sports car & motorcycle racing. 30 minutes to Orange County Speedway, South Boston Motor Speedway, & Person County Drag Strip. 1.5 hours to Nascar's Martinsville Motor Speedway. 50 minutes to Chapel Hill & UNC. 60 minutes to RDU International Airport. 65 minutes to Raleigh & NC State University, CASL Soccer Complex, & RBC Center. 65 minutes to Cary, NC & WakeMed Soccer Stadium (NCAA championships last 2 years) & USA Baseball National Training Complex.
In summary, this house is comfortable & perfect for a family or group looking for more space, privacy, and amenities. Plus there's much to see & do & many places to eat in our area. Hope you give it a try---we're here to serve you. Sincerely, Arch & Kathy

I didn't even have to take out the trash.

What a treat to find a rental that includes sheets on the beds and towels, soap and shampoo in all the bathrooms. This is just like staying in a hotel - only better. When you arrive the beds are made, as opposed to a stack of saran wrapped sheets that you have to figure out which room they belong to and when you leave you don't have to run around emptying trash from all the rooms like most rental houses I've stayed in. Definitely a bonus. The best thing about the house is how spacious it is. Everyone can fit around the big dining room table, but also spread out in different rooms or out on the front porch swing or in the screened in porch around back. It's a good rental for a group wanting to spend time at Lake Mayo.
