HALE BALLEJA (House of Jazz Ballet).
News Flash! Hale Balleja has been prominently featured in several publications. Most recently, "The Huffington Post" included Hale Balleja in a January 2011 article titled "11 Small Eco Homes That Live Large". Hale Balleja is featured in a magnificent photo spread in the 2010 book titled "Small ECO Houses: Living Green in Style" by C. P. Benitez and A. S. Vidiella, from Universe Publishing. In addition, Hale Balleja graced the cover of the prominent magazine "Hawaii Home + Remodeling" in July 2009, with a feature article, titled "Modern Rock", attesting to Hale Balleja's dazzling and unique design.
Hale Balleja is one of the Puna coast’s premier properties and your Rainbow Bridge to paradise. Designed for a noted Chicago choreographer by a noted San Francisco architect, this spacious, upscale modernist masterpiece provides a magnificent setting for your Hawaiian dream vacation. Marvel at the ever changing tropical sunlight as it plays upon the waves crashing against the cliffs of Kehena and sparkles off the lush foliage on the ridge to the west. At night, you will bask under the dazzling light of the tropical moon while the sounds of waves crashing along the nearby shoreline lull you to sleep. Hale Balleja radiates the Spirit of Aloha, providing the perfect setting for physical and spiritual enhancement.
Hale Balleja, completed in 2005, is itself a work of modern art, a living sculpture designed in sleek vertical and horizontal lines. Oceanic and African artworks, specially selected from the owners’ collection, adorn the house. Fitted with beautiful, comfortable furniture, the home boasts floors of gleaming tropical hardwood. The Great Room, with floor to ceiling windows, incorporates an overlook with a view of Kehena Bay and the lovely ironwood forest of Oliana Point. A sunken kitchen features stainless steel appliances, granite counters and iridescent ocean-blue tiling. The bedroom offers a king-size bed with a view of the Pacific Ocean. The bathroom features a walk-in tiled shower, also offering a view. The large, covered lanais allow for outdoor dining or drinks along with lovely views.
Hale Balleja is located in a relatively undiscovered "Old Hawaii," away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the state. Its location, near the old Red Road (Highway 137), offers access to what is considered one of Hawaii’s most beautiful drives. A very short walk - of just minutes - takes you to Kehena Beach, with sparkling black sands, warm waters, palm trees, and an ambiance found nowhere else in the islands. Oliana Point, accessible state land just across the road, offers a rustling stand of ironwood and palm trees, unparalleled views of Sunrises, the Puna Coastline, Kehena Beach, Whale Watching, a BlowHole, a Double-Arch Lava Rock Formation, and a magical Pebble Cove. With all of this located just outside your door, we guarantee you will never want to leave!

My partner and I are at the airport heading home to NYC after a fantastic stay at Hale Balleja. This has to be the best deal in all of Hawaii. The home is stylish, comfortable and the Puna District is exactly what you think Hawaii should be. It may not be for everyone (no TV, cell reception is spotty but the Internet was 100% reliable), but if you want to be off the grid in the best way possible and have a chance to connect with the "real" Hawaii", you're going to love Hale Balleja. A bit of insider information that Juan, the property manager passed on to us was that the local community gathers on Wednesday night for what I can only describe as a modern luau. Tons of food, great local music, people dancing, local artist. It was the friendliest group of people we've met in a very long time. Of all the things we did on our trip (which covered Kauai, Maui, and The Big Island), this was my favorite. Hawaii is a wonderful place and we felt the Puna District and Hale Balleja are incredibly special.
Owner response:Many Mahalos for your kind words:) It's so wonderful when people discover, and get the magic of Puna. I know you will be back..and we and Hale Balleja will be waiting. A Hoi Hou!

We loved our stay at the Hale Balleja. The house was beautiful and clean (just as described), and the neighborhood was also wonderful as it's close to the ocean and an amazing lava pool (our favorite part of the trip). The black sand beach is very close, but the tides are rough so I'd stick to sun bathing, rather than swimming. A brief hike from the house will lead you to the most amazing view of the ocean. It's about an hour to the Volcano park, 20 minutes to Pahoa (great farmer's market on weekends) and 40 minutes to Hilo. There is no air conditioning, but it is quite cool in the evening so no need for it really. We stayed in Kona afterwards, but we kept thinking about Hale Balleja. Juan and Larry were also great to work with. Thank you for a wonderful stay! We hope to return some day.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hale Balleja during our recent visit to Hawaii's Puna district. Beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding area, proximity to black sand beaches and the striking architecture of Hale Balleja make this a memorable place to stay.
