Property description

WHEN GUESTS drive down our road and take in the view they all exclaim 'Wow!' When they open the front door the sense of wonder continues as it dawns upon them they will be spending the next week or more in this unique, beautiful home. It’s no surprise our home in Glendree was featured in the UK Sunday Times (June 2014) as one of twelve Irish homes offered for self-catering accommodation which have ‘risen above the identikit Irish cottage”. Travel writer Niall Toner continues “ With more of us choosing to vacation in Ireland over the past few years, the market has demanded higher standards . . . and the supply side has duly responded with luxury-as-standard facilities”. Loudons at Glendree has 'luxury-as-standard' and a whole lot more.

In Glendree we found a peaceful and picturesque location, and working with an existing traditional house and farm buildings we extended and restored to create our dream family home centred around a huge, open-plan room with a grand design - a room in a home full of light and warmth, beauty and comfort, and interesting things reflecting our own interests and travels.

When we’re home we like to spend some of our time with family and friends – walking, talking, cooking, dining, touring and exploring . . . and at other times quietly reading, listening to music, watching movies. . . and our high quality cook’s kitchen, big tables, wall of books, fireplaces, superior underfloor heating system, wifi internet, ipod docking stations and sofa and reclining chairs in front of the big screen . . . all help make you comfortable and relaxed.

Our home really is the best of the old and the new. A complete renovation of the main house was undertaken in 2008, the conversion and connection of the old dairy in 2009 and, adding charm and character, the original 300 year old cottage stands proudly next to the old piggery and coach house ... unrestored ... our next projects!

The property sits peacefully in idyllic, Irish countryside, halfway up the mountain side of Slieve Aughty and overlooking the valley to the Slieve Bearna mountain range. The view is stunning - green, rolling hills, hedge lined lanes and fields, and old stone walls and cottages – all made for quiet, contemplative walking or if you feel like it - more active hiking, cycling, fishing, biking and exploring. It is all here!

Our home was designed to bring the best of the outside inside. A run of French doors open onto an elegant and large terrace which wraps around the living areas and provides an ideal area to quietly gaze at the view, sit by the firepit or BBQ and entertain. From this terrace you can hear the fall of our stream only 50 yards away, and on a clear night the Milky Way can be viewed arcing across the sky. Our large, south-facing conservatory is full of healthy plants and houses our favorite overstuffed sofa in which to recline with wine or a book, and is also set up for sunny, picturesque dining. Large expanses of double glazing and multiple skylights throughout the house all serve to capture the view, solar heat and light - all bringing the best of the outside inside.

We find many of our guests, despite the best touring plans and our proximity to major tourist attractions, simply relax and stay close, enjoying our home and close environs ...as we do whenever we can.

The property sits peacefully in the heartland of traditional Irish Music on 20 acres of idyllic, Irish countryside. The view is stunning - green, rolling hills, hedge-lined lanes and fields, and old stone walls and cottages – all made for quiet, contemplative walking or if you feel like it - more active hiking, cycling, golfing, fishing and exploring. It is all here! ENNIS Town: A picturesque, narrow-streeted, historic market town. “As the capital of a renowned music county, Ennis is bursting at the seams with pubs featuring live sessions almost every night of the week. In fact “it's one of the best reasons to stay here” Lonely Planet (10th Edition 2012).

Clare EQUESTRIAN Centre: at Clare Equestrian Centre they provide the quintessential experience of horse riding in Ireland and cater for all levels and disciplines.

Important note: if you want to eat very well and not leave the house at all, we find a combination of Tesco online delivery service for everyday food, and visits to the house by Italian chef Enrico, suits us very well. Enrico will come to house and entertain you with his flamboyant style of authentic Italian cooking. As he says . . . 'like Mama does!' Ask us for menus or special requests.

When you stay in Glendree - you can do a lot - or you can do nothing at all!

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1997

About the owner: We're the Loudons - Fran, Paul, Bridget and Alex. We're all Australian born but started travelling for work and adventure when the kids were 4 and 7 years old. We've lived in several countries but our ancestory and love of all-things-Irish called us 'home' to settle and raise our children in County Clare. We grew vegetables, played traditional music and bred sheep . . . and the kids fed lambs and forked hay. To support ourselves, Paul commuted to London and I taught in the local secondary school. We made many friends, belonged to a wonderful community and celebrated the beauty of our surroundings on a daily basis. We also renovated and extended our home - a beautiful home to be shared with family and friends and more recently, with guests. We started holiday renting Glendree when, a few years ago, our nest emptied and Paul and I decided to continue our adventure and have developed projects in South Africa, his in mining and mine in NGO education - interesting times. As we'd hoped in the land of 'saints and scholars', the kids received a wonderful education in Ireland and we are very, very thankful for this. Bridget is now a bright shining and successful young entrepreneur and Alex is in Trinity College in Dublin doing his PhD in Chemistry. We count our blessings and we come home to Glendree as often as possible and . . . we can never get enough of it!
