Our family had a lovely stay - 3 kids (ages 8, 5, 5) & 4 adults. We made it in the minivan without any issues, but with the rains we didn't want to push our luck of getting stuck. We brought all our food with us & didn't leave the property once we arrived. Lots of walks, canoe rides, s'mores, board games, horseshoes, etc. Kids loved all the games, canoe, woods to explore. We had one mountain biker in the group that loved the challenge of the terrain (i.e, the road!) & the altitude. Thank you!

Our varied group all found enjoyable activities right at the cottage, as well as driving to longer hikes and fishing in the excellent valleys nearby. And of course the man in our group loved driving the solid four wheel drive we rented, although the four wheel drive application was not necessary to reach the cottage. The stars and especially the milky way were so clear and were enjoyed by stargazers from the porch. Beautiful wildflowers, mushrooms, trees and birds were plentiful right around the pond to keep the nature lovers happy. And plenty of boardgames were available for evening entertainment. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking all of our meals, and the cottage is beautifully furnished including comfortable beds with handmade quilts. We enjoyed the remoteness and quiet, and it was just what we were looking for, and totally recommend a stay there for those looking to get away from the heat and the city.

Dear Greg & Jan, We had an outstanding time at your cabin!!! The quiet and seclusion was exactly what we needed. The wildlife that we saw was unforgetable!!!! From hummingbirds to a 10 point whitetail deer in velvet walking through the yard. We rode the train from Durango to Silverton and enjoyed a few dinners at local restaurants.The cool crisp mornings watching wildlife come to the pond from the deck was a great experience. The cabin was very comfortable and relaxing. We had a wonderful time and look forward to booking the cabin again. Thanks again, Sincerely, B Las Cruces, NM.

We stayed at this cabin again for a second time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We loved being out of cell phone reception, with no television or internet. It was so nice to read, do puzzles, play horseshoes, watch the dogs swim in the pond, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. This year my dog and I discovered how fun it was to trail run in the early morning on the dirt roads, and bike and ATV trails you could reach right from the cabin. At 9600 feet and with all the hills we got an excellent workout with great scenery. Snowcapped mountain peaks, babbling brooks, pine trees, and aspens. What a great place to go to get away from it all!

Owner response:Depending on their phone and carrier, some folks have no problem making cell calls just outside by the gate.

We chose this rental because we wanted somewhere the dogs could go swimming - and swim they did! They had a great time in the pond and enjoyed looking out the dog height windows. We loved being away from internet and the phone. It made it much easier to relax and just enjoy the beautiful setting. Since the cabin is so far from city lights, there were so many stars it was hard to find the big dipper. The milky way was really bright. We were lucky enough to be there during the meteor shower and saw lots of shooting stars. There were several hiking trails down the road from the cabin so we hiked a different trail each day - all great. The owners were very communicative and nice. We would highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a change of pace.

Perfect Family Vacation

This was our third year to have our family gathering at the Mountain Meadow Home. We have grandkids from 4-14. All of them love it and look forward to it the trip all year. The pond and canoe are a big hit as well as the horseshoes and just being in the forest. It is truly secluded and quiet with intense starry skies to watch from the large deck. We make somores at night in the fireplace. When we need more people around we go to Vallicito Lake to ride horses or rent a houseboat or speedboat for a day. The house is well maintained and has all you need for a relaxing visit.

Recommended for:Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Idyllic retreat

Idyllic retreat away from it all. Fantastic setting amongst the mountains. Great for just relaxing and getting away from it all. Actually saw deer in the garden along with lots of chipmunks. The main lounge with the stunning view over the lake was just perfect. Would definitely recommend a trip or two into Durango. We loved the town. Also go for a drive round the lake as the far side is far prettier than the bit you drive along to get the cabin. Would recommend a 4 wheel drive for getting up to the cabin and watch out for the odd cow in your way. The owners were a delight to deal with. Very helpful and made sure the place was clean and ready for us on our arrival. Would definitely recommend if you fancy getting away from it all.

A mountain top experience

We had a small family reunion here. Wow, what a peaceful and beautiful place to have a vacation. The mountain along with the beauty of the area was awesome. The pond was a kick for the big and little kids. The cabin is huge and nicely furnished, clean and really comfortable. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy fun with others. We hope to come back. Location near Lake Vallecito and also near Durango is great....close, but not too close. This is a very private and secluded place and a wonderful place to have a good time together! Owners were great and helpful. Property and explation to us was as described. Listings/location, etc. were as described.

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful cabin. The views are truly magnificent. We enjoyed the meadows of wildflowers and streams on a hike we took. We had a wonderful time with the canoe in the pond. This is a lovely place and we had a great experience!

We really enjoyed your cabin! The peace and quite was exactly what we were seeking. We spent our evenings walking the property and reading at night. The candles were a nice touch. Other things we loved: the windows (lots of them!), the porch, the overall cozy ambiance inside, etc. A very relaxing vacation for us. Thanks!

We love this cabin because it's beautiful, well stocked with cooking utensils and it's lived-in. We feel very much at home here. It gives us a chance to relate to our grandchildren in ways there isn't time for the rest of the year: cards, songs, games, puzzles, reading. Thank you so much for making this place and its pristine setting available to others. Hope to be here again next year!

As we came through the gate and up the drive I thought I had seen cabins like this one. After walking out on the deck and smelling the pure air I realized that no one has ever been to a cabin like this one! This isolated and beautiful location is the picture of perfection for getting away from it all. Staying here five days surrounded by the people I care most about, I felt myself become part of this place. Nowhere that I've ever been has had that effect on me.
