Location: Plum Island, North of Boston & Greater Merrimack Valley, Massachusetts, USA (three miles from historic newburyport)
Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 7-8)
"Morning Glory" is a true charmer which sits at the tail end of a quiet dead end street at the northern end of the island. The newly renovated kitchen and bath are pleasantly offset by the old charm of yellow pine floors, bead board walls, and a cozy brick fireplace. The four season porch has a wicker chaise lounge for napping after a long day at the beach, and a t.v. area with DVD and video player for rainy day entertainment.
Sleeping space is more than ample. There are two bedrooms on the first floor, one with a double and the other with two twin beds. The attic, or dormitory, has three twin beds, and a cozy sitting area that overlooks the mouth of the river, where sailboats come and go all day.
The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, gas oven, and, on the deck just off the kitchen, an outdoor gas grill. The yard is fenced for those of you with small children, and large enough for a game of croquet or horseshoes. Plenty of casual furniture is available, like Adirondack chairs,a patio dining set with umbrella, and beach chairs.
Walk out the front door and follow a footpath over the dunes to a fabulous beach where the Atlantic Ocean and Merrimack River meet to spawn some of the best fishing and surfcasting in New England. Stripers and bluefish cruise this nine mile stretch of beach. Bait and tackle are available nearby, or , if you prefer, join others on a party boat at the Captains' Fleet one half mile up the road.
The island is noted for its singular beauty as a barrier beach and its funky feel. Within walking distance are several restaurants, and an "island store" for restocking your victuals. There is even a take-out restaurant where you can order your lobsters precooked.
The National Wildlife Refuge hosts hundreds of acres of open space for walking boardwalks or for bird watching, and seven miles of dirt road for biking to Sandy Point for a picnic. There are several places to launch kayaks, small boats, or hire deep sea fishing charters.
A three mile drive takes you to Historic Newburyport, where quaint shops, ethnic restaurants, local live theater, and some of the most famous architecture in New England exists. Sea captains' mansions with "widow walks" line High Street and give you a glimpse into the past when Newburyport was a major seaport. The active waterfront has a long stretch of boardwalk for walking and plenty of park benches for watching the comings and goings of the "boating world".
Still, after a stimulating day in town, there's nothing quite like coming home to the arms of "Morning Glory" and her simple ways.
