EAGLE'S NEST: In a grassy meadow between the Grand Tetons and the Snake River, a handsome stone and log house sits on a quiet pond. Two original 19th Century homesteads were joined by an airy, central stone structure to make a private house so lovely, authentic to the landscape and grand that it quite takes the breath away. Reclaimed timbers, stacked stone, old wide-plank fir floors, huge windows and elk hide rugs come together to create a feeling of luxury, retreat and rustic elegance. Eagle’s nest is surrounded by tumbling blue ribbon trout streams that weave around and under the house, and feed the famous, coveted Crescent H waters. River willows bend over the water, trailing their slim branches like fingers among the fish and pebbles. Moose come often to visit the willows, and a patient observer at Eagle’s Nest’s windows can watch them browse, majestic and strange, among the trees.

Inside, the house’s heart is the great room, an airy, open space with a vaulted ceiling. A sociable, comfortable seating area faces a high stone fireplace. Cut logs are stacked and ready for burning, and winter holidays feel charmed and joyous when celebrated here, before the fire, a silent, snowy wonderland outside the windows. The gourmet kitchen is well-suited to entertaining, and cooking for big groups: a Thermador double oven, a six-burner stove top, a large SubZero refrigerator and freezer and ample polished countertops provide plenty of work and conversation space. The dining room is off of the great room and kitchen, and has a long dining table at one end and a restored 1880’s Brunswick billiards table at the other.

Five bedrooms are spread throughout the house. The sumptuous master suite is in a wing of its own, connected to the main house by a glass-walled corridor, which spans a little stream. At the foot of the king bed, an impossibly long window displays the entire Teton range, every peak a stunning height. The master suite has two separate baths – one cozy and log-walled, the other brimming with light, and each with a big walk-in closet. A private sitting room leads off from the bedroom, and up a short flight of stairs are an office and an alcove with two built-in twin beds.

Eagle’s Nest has four other bedrooms, each with its own unique delights. A second glass-enclosed corridor leads to a guest wing with two bedrooms, two baths, a firelit sitting room, a flat screen TV and from the windows, a panorama of meadow and mountains. Outside is a private porch and a courtyard. The junior suite is accessed from the great room up a spiral rock staircase, and has its own wood-burning fireplace. The final bedroom is above the garage, connected to the main house by a traditional covered walkway, and this private studio enclave has a full bath and kitchen, and a queen bed.

In summer, the meadow around Eagle’s Nest blooms with wildflowers, and an herb garden thrives behind the house; but it is winter that is truly magical. Peace seems to sift down with the snow, all is quiet. The snowy meadow is cross-hatched with animal tracks: wolf and moose, elk and fox. And, of course, the long exploratory arcs of ski and snowshoe trails. Sunrise and sunset pink the snow, and the rosy half-light fills the rooms of Eagle’s Nest. Ten private acres encircle the house, and yet the town Wilson is just minutes away, and Jackson is close by as well. The Teton Village ski area is a short drive; and after a day’s adventuring, what a pleasure it is to return to the warm lighted refuge of Eagle’s Nest.
