In Hawaiian, "hale" means "house," "kai" means "by the water" and "`ohi`a" is a native tree that grows on all the Hawaiian Islands.
`Ohi`a Kai Hale is a large fully-furnished apartment with two large bedrooms with a king bed in each, full bathroom, large full kitchen, and dining area that opens onto a large living area leading to a spacious lanai. Amenities include large-screen television with digital cable and DVR,DVD and VCR players, ceiling fans in all rooms, towels, sheets, dishes and other kitchenware, iron and ironing board. Wireless internet can be accessed at no additional charge over our WiFi secure network ohia kai.
the hale in kapaa kauai is larger than most timeshares, a condo or a cottage but we don't call it a B&B, bed and breakfast, as we don't live on this properity.
Our Hale has Large windows to let the beautiful Kaua`i sun into each room. The surrounding lush tropical vegetation, including banana, mango, noni, coconut, bamboo, and panax, ensures shade and privacy. On the lower level there is a laundry room with new, high efficiency Maytag washer and dryer for available for guest use.
The location of `Ohi`a Kai is ideal for vacationers, business visitors, and residents seeking short-term housing. It is on a quiet lot one block from Kuhio Highway within convenient walking distance of the beach, several churches, and the shopping and dining pleasures of downtown Kapa`a. It is approximately ten miles from Lihue Airport, a 20-minute drive at non-peak times.
Some popular visitor destinations to the north and their approximate driving times include Kealia Beach (5 minutes), `Anini Beach (25 minutes), Kilauea Lighthouse (20 minutes), Limahuli National Tropical Garden (55 minutes), Hanalei (45 minutes), and Haena State Park at the end of the road (60 minutes). Haena is where you will find Ke`e Beach and the trailhead to the spectacular Na Pali Coast trail.
To the south heading toward Lihue, Coconut Marketplace (5 minutes), Lydgate Beach Park (10 minutes), turn right at Coco Palms to see `Opaeka`a Falls (15 minutes). When you are back on Kuhio Highway heading toward Lihue, turn right to Hanamaulu to see Wailua Falls (30 minutes), Kukui Grove Mall (22 minutes), or continue on Kuhio Highway to Poipu (30 mins.) Back on the highway see the largest coffee plantation in the USA, Kauai Coffee. At the southwestern end of the road is Kekaha, with a very large and private beach, or before you get that far, turn right to see Waimea Canyon.
Your hosts, Bob and Marianne, are the owners and have lived on Kaua`i for fourteen years and will be happy to answer questions and make recommendations related to your special needs and interests, including hiking, kayaking, surfing, kid-friendly places, churches, shopping, dining, activities, Hawaiian culture, medical facilities, alternative health and personal care services. Please e-mail us or call us.
To reach `Ohi`a Kai from Lihue Airport, turn right at the traffic light as you’re leaving the airport. This puts you on Kuhio Highway headed north. Continue straight for about nine miles. Along the way you will cross the Wailua River, pass the Coconut Marketplace shopping and dining complex on your right, ans soon you will see Safeway on your left and the Waipouli Beach Resort on your right. Keep driving! Shortly thereafter you will come to a traffic light in front of a small shopping complex with a Big Save grocery store and Shell gas station on your left. The Post Office is in that complex! A few blocks further and you will see a left-turn only lane in front of the Latter Day Saints church.
There is no traffic light here, but you will see the entrance to Pono Kai resort directly to your right and a sign welcoming you to downtown Kapa`a in the grassy area ahead. Make a sharp left onto `Ohi`a Street. Note that this is a 90° turn! Don't make a soft left onto Ulu Street, a common error for newcomers. `Ohi`a Kai is the third and last house on the right side of the street. Our property faces the parking lot of the LDS church (white church with blue roof).
`Ohi`a Kai is clearly marked with green signs. Park in the space designated for `Ohi`a Kai Hale. If we are not there when you arrive we will have a lock box on the front door. If you plan to arrive in the evening, contact us prior to your arrival so that we can give you the lock box combination.
We also have a cozy 1-BR unit on the same property, `Ohi`a Kai Cottage. See our VRBO listing #95386 or visit our website for more details.

We were very pleased with the accomodation here. The Hale was very spacious and we made use of the BBQ and grilled up lots of fish and vegetables. The beds and lounge chairs were very comfortable and we enjoyed sitting outside on the lanai. We didn't hear a peep out of the roosters at night time and slept very well with the breeze coming through the windows. The local farmers market at Kaapa were handy as were the Big Save & Safeway supermarkets. The fresh flowers on arrival were much appreciated too!
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, sightseeing, girls getaway.
My stay at the hale was very delightful! Home town is Castroville, CA where it's foggy.

The Hale is on the second floor and there are trees all around, so it made us feel like we were in the trees. The breeze would come through and we could here birds chirping. The central location in kapaa is perfect for us...we would get up early and go walk the bike path along the ocean. The restaurants in walking distance were good and not tooo pricy. I recommend the Hale for those who want away from the hotels and a nice home with all the amenities needed for comfort. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return next year and get the same deal with Bob and Marianne the owners of Ohia Kai!!!
Owner response:We truly do strive to make our guests feel the spirit of aloha while visiting our beautiful island home!
Recommended for:Tourists without a car, adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway.

Ohia Kai IS perfect for the budget family. Our family of four stayed comfortably in the Hale. Admittedly, the TV was too complicated for us (but there's so much else to do on Kauai that we didn't care) and it took a day to figure out the lights, but the living room was just as advertised, bedrooms comfortable, and we really appreciated the full kitchen, beach towels, boogie board and cooler. Bob and Marianne were friendly and easy to contact. The location is a very short walk to the beach or in to town (breakfast at Ono Family Restaurant was delicious), and central to many Kauai destinations. Ohia Kai is more like a friend's house than a boutique hotel, but I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a good value and a casual place to stay.

The hale was absolutely perfect for all our needs. The location in Kapaa town was fabulous - very good place for a home base while exploring the island. The small town of Kapaa was charming with a nice mix of restaurants and shops of all types. We took Bob's suggestion and walked to the Mexican restaurant, Shaka Tacos and besides enjoying a quick, inexpensive meal, we had entertainment as well. It was just a short drive to grocery stores and loads of other places to eat and shop. The apartment itself was wonderful with 2 bedrooms, a full bath, a kitchen with more cabinet space than anyone could ever need, a spacious living and dining room, and a terrific covered front porch that was perfect for relaxing and having coffee in the morning. Of course the infamous Kauai roosters were a shock the first morning when the started screeching at 3:30 AM, but we almost got used to them by the time we had to leave a week later. Bob was terrific with his recommendations and so helpful. He sent someone the next morning when we couldn't figure out how to operate the tv and all the remotes. I would definitely tell people to stay at the hale if they want a very relaxing, homelike atmosphere so that they can feel like locals rather than tourists. I have already told several friends about the place! If I return to Kauai, I would love to stay at Ohi'a Kai Hale again.
