Accommodations:  cabin, Studio, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

The "Haylapa House" is an incredible little gem of rustic architecture and is so-called because it's walls are made out of hay bales. It 20" thick walls envelope you in calm and coziness and you will never want to leave. It was built by artist couple, Laurie Roberts and Lane McClelland who created most of it's furnishings and artwork as well. It is one large room, and is incredibly romantic with both indoor and outdoor fireplaces.

The property is located near the state park where hiking and riding trails are in abundance. In addition, we are midway between the beautiful Anza Borrego Desert and the wonderful San Diego beaches so we truly offer something for everyone who loves nature and does not want to stay in the city. There are two animal sanctuaries nearby that rescue wolves, lions and tigers, as well as stables that rent horses.

A privately fenced patio with pizza oven is the "front yard" and an additional fenced two and a half acre compound of 100 year old oaks, trails and boulders are the "back yard". All very secure for you and your pet.

    • Even without dogs or horses, this was one of the most enchanting abodes I've had the pleasure to enjoy. It seems amazing that this stark and sere landscape can exist just a stone's throw from the lush coast. Hiking back up behind the property was rewarded with breathtaking vistas and amazing flora. Advise that you don't wear shorts, as I did... ouch! Even the thorns have thorns here. As a woodworker myself, I was astounded by all the charming handmade touches that abound in the house and on the property, Photos on the web site do not do it justice. Clearly it was a labor of love, and reflects a refined sense of the use of natural materials that imbue a sense of peace and harmony. The house stands as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable architecture. Haylapa changed what had been loosely planned as a coastal road trip. Drawn to the beauty of the desert, we continued on to the Salton Sea, and on up through Joshua Tree National Park, before looping back through the mountains to the sea. Beautiful, beautiful place. Thank you so much... Avra and Janna

    • I just spent a relaxing 2 nights at the Haylapa House, and I couldn't have asked for anything more! The gorgeous natural beauty of the surroundings, the amazing house itself, the delicious pizza, the relaxing patio, the endless array of hiking trails, and the 2 1/2 acres for my dogs to run around, I never felt the need to leave the property for anything the entire time I was there! Lane and Laurie were the perfect hosts! This was the perfect solo retreat for a single young woman, like myself, and my 2 dogs loved having free roaming time and the great dog bed inside the house! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick getaway to relax and forget the world for a couple days, and I'm already looking forward to my next stay.

    • Our stay at the Haylapa was one of the most relaxing and memorable vacations we've ever had. The challenging trails and panoramic views were a wonderful highlight of our trip. Our dogs were in heaven chasing little lizards around the boulders and charging up and down the mountain all day. We spent a nice day at Lake Cuyamaca (right up the road) fishing for trout, bass and bluegill and again, enjoying the mountain scenery. Laurie and Lane were perfect hosts and the unique, handmade furnishings were as comfy as they were beautiful; Can't wait to visit again in the fall!

    • This is a wonderful getaway for SoCal residents and dog owners. The hosts are gracious, the accommodations so charming. My Springer Spaniel Riley enjoyed it as much (if not more) than I did. I, we, will be back. Thanks Laurie!

    • Lovely place to spend a few quiet days. Very comfortable for both people and dogs. We enjoyed coffee in the morning on the patio and baking pizza in the wood burning pizza oven in the evening. Thank you for a great weekend.
