                      Car: Not Necessary

While one reads all about the more visited Caribbean destinations such as the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Caymans, and St. Martin, it's often hard to find information about St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One reason is that St. Vincent, a bountiful island with vast coconut and banana plantations, in the past never primarily depended on tourism as a source of income, and another is that the Grenadines are remote and can only be reached by yachts or commuter airlines. As a result, these islands are the perfect haven for travellers searching for quiet, beautiful getaways surrounded in natural splendours, rather than islands full of glitzy hotels, casinos and jet loads of tourists.

The romantic island of Bequia (pronounced Bek-way) was named the island of the clouds (although some now say it was named the crutch because of its shape) by the Carib Indians and has changed little with time. Due to its seclusion from the rest of the world, Bequia has built up a strong seafaring history, with age-old traditions in boat building, fishing and even whaling, being one of the few places in the world where limited whaling is still allowed by the International Whaling Commission. It has also been a sanctuary for sailors long before any other visitors discovered the Grenadines.

Gold-sandy beaches, many of which disappear into coves that are excellent for sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling, encircle Bequia. The centre of the island is hilly and forested, providing a dramatic backdrop to the bays and beaches. Admiralty Bay, the island's natural harbour, is a favourite anchoring spot for yachtsmen from all over the world, and here visitors can enjoy the quaint waterfront, lined with bars, restaurants and craft shops. Isolated enough to remain relatively unspoiled, yet lively enough to be stimulating and entertaining, Bequia provides a blend of the old and new that many find perfect.

On Bequia you will meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean that will welcome you to the island and make you feel at home immediately. It is also a great place to make new international friends from all over the world, go on a day sail, go hiking, or just 'lime' under a coconut tree with your favourite beverage. Bequia’s simple, unhurried lifestyle and beauty boasts a magical charm that leaves visitors wanting more.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1980

About the owner: While exploring the island, a few weeks after their arrival to Bequia on Christmas Eve 1978, Sonja and Otmar Schaedle stumbled upon a lonely spot above the sea - a place with a glorious view over the Grenadines. Formidable walls, ancient water cisterns and heavy foundations - all abandoned! The discovery haunted them. When they returned to Bequia the following year, they were in love with the island so much that they had the idea of moving there for several months every year during their long summer holidays. After contacting the family which owned the ruins and estate, they were able to purchase the property. A few years later, excavation began and many more ruins were uncovered - a sturdy gateway with protecting flanks, a huge oven and a cellar. The first European settlers in the Grenadine islands were French. Local hearsay indicated that there had been a plantation on the site. Sure enough, the original French family name of the former owners and a map dating back to 1763 were found in old documents. The challenge was obvious. The restoration of the building had to grow out of the old ruins. To match the traditional style, the same beautiful stones were used, as well as timber from the local forests. The arches, cisterns and the stone floors had to be rebuilt by Bequia’s skilled craftsmen, while using imaginative reconstruction, based on how the original might have looked. Clearing of the property ended in 1982, while the construction of the buildings was finally finished in 1986. Up to this day, the tower of The Old Fort can been seen crowning Mt. Pleasant Point. It is surrounded by shaded terraces and large gardens. Guests enjoy the glittering sea below and the emerald islands stretching outward to the south, including the little sister island of Mustique and distant Grenada. Little changed from times gone by with The Old Fort still being a truly magical place like it was generations before.
