Simple Country Living

Guest: Armstrong Family (Wellington, FL)
Date of Stay: 01/04/12 Review Submitted: 01/09/12

Despite the cabins lack of modern conveniences and old style, it was very clean and adequate with many beds and rooms for the kids to sleep. Comfortable and simple was a nice change from our high-tech living. The kids loved running in the yard with the dogs. Having chickens, horses and a pig made it a loving/nature filled change to our everyday life.

The farmhouse was exactly as described. Walton and Betty were great-feeding the animals, the scenery.....everything was great! The beds were clean. House was spacious and comfortable. Not too far from our daily activities. We didn't want to leave. Will tell everyone we know how great it was. We hope to come back!

We loved the Old Farmhouse!

Guest: Kathy (Richmond, VA)
Date of Stay: 06/19/11 Review Submitted: 10/02/11

We spent a week at the Old Farmhouse and enjoyed every minute of it. The house is lovely and the setting is idyllic. We loved the animals, especially Solomon the donkey, who we have greatly missed since leaving. The kids really enjoyed their egg hunts and knew just where to look by the end of the week. Another big favorite was the rope swing--my kids are still talking wistfully about it. We highly recommend building a fire and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows while you're there. What could be more relaxing? The area is also very nice. We spent one afternoon in Boone, strolling and window shopping, and another afternoon in West Jefferson, doing the same thing. We listened to live Bluegrass music at the Todd General Store ("The Neighbors" are fantastic!), heard a storyteller spin her tails, went tubing on the New River, and hiked to the top of Elk Knob. We didn't go to Tweetsie--it just wasn't that kind of trip for us. We wanted quiet and relaxation, and that's what we got. Thanks Walton and Betty! Give Solomon a pat and a handful of clover for us! :-)

Great time!

Our trip to the farmhouse was such a wonderful experience for our family. The house was great:: clean and comfortable and spacious. Our kids had a great time, ages 2 and 4 along with their cousins, age 3,4 and 7. The hosts were friendly and gracious and our kids had a great time feeding the animals, running around the yard and swinging on the rope swing. We can't wait to go again next year and this time stay an entire week!

A+ Vacation

Guest: Family of six (Coastal NC)
Date of Stay: 06/09/11 Review Submitted: 06/16/11

What a wonderful experience! My husband and I and our four young children (ages 9, 7, 3yo twins) recently stayed at the old farmhouse. First of all, it was easy to get to, and close enough to the touristy things and grocery shopping. We liked just staying at the farm the best though. The house was very clean and comfortable. Although it was near the owners home, privacy was never an issue. Mr. Walton and Mrs. Betty are very warm and helpful. My children loved feeding the chickens, and Lucy the pig. They loved Heidi the dog who visited often, so much that they really wanted to bring her home. The views of the mountains were very beautiful. We really wanted a camping type experience but with all the modern convieniences and this propertt fit the bill. This place really was perfect for us and we hope to go again next year.

We've spent a week at the Farmhouse, together with our friends and kids, and had really great time, children and adults. The rooms are clean and really cozy. The kids had lots of fan with dogs, hens, a donkey and a piggy. Walton, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. We definitely recommend this place to anybody with kids who wants to spend vacations in the country, and would be happy to rent it again next time we'll visit the East Cost. Thank you very much Walton! Olga, Dmitri and Ruth

A Real Mountain Retreat

Guest: None (North Carolina mountains)
Date of Stay: 07/11/10 Review Submitted: 07/25/10

If you are looking for a real retreat in the North Carolina mountains, a place where both kids and worn-out adults can find serenity and enjoy a true rural experience, then this is the place! After feeding the pig and chickens, take the bicycles and head to the best place to cycle in the mountains (Todd's Railroad Grade) or the fishing poles and head to the pond and then just relax on the wrap-around porch and watch the deer come by. Highly Recommended.

Great Vacation!

This was such a relaxing vacation. We enjoyed going on short day trips around the area and then coming back in the evening to hang out on the farm. Our boys really enjoyed feeding all the animals each evening, chasing the chickens, and going on egg hunts to find where the chickens had laid their eggs. We would love to come back again next summer! Highly recommend this farmhouse stay!!

What a treat to stay at The Old Farmhouse this past weekend! After a day at Tweetsie, your guest house was a welcome respite for the 7 of us. Each of the children delighted in feeding the chickens and petting the horses, pig and donkey. The highlight was collecting fresh eggs and holding a new baby chick! And the eggs made a delicious breakfast for our group! Thank you for your warm hospitality and clean, well-equipped home. We will defintely need to stay longer the next time.

Thank you a million times for sharing your farm with our family! The farm house was clean and had a great kitchen! We were only able to stay for three days this time but we made a lifetime of memories. Everyone (ages 1 to 60) enjoyed the time at your farm and wanted to stay longer. It was such a wholesome experience for everyone we are already making plans to return next year and the year after that and the the year after that,....

Walton and Betty, your farm was exactly the sort of retreat our family needed. Everyone has a favorite memory, from worm-hunting and fishing, hiking to the waterfall, splashing in the stream and finding salamanders, to gathering the eggs (it was fun even in the rain), feeding the chickens and the pig, riding the horses, catching lightning bugs after roasting marshmallows at the campfire, swinging on the rope swing, and seeing more stars at night than we've ever seen in our lives. The front porch was a perfect resting spot, with a constant breeze, Tar Baby's companionship, and the sound of the stream behind us. We made so many memories, and found a new family tradition in meeting up at your farm. Both of you were so easy to talk to; you made us feel like we belonged! Thank you so much for sharing your blessings. We didn't want to leave, and promised the kids we'd be back again very soon.

The Old Farmhouse was a great mountain get-away for our family of 6. The house felt like home. The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped. We all enjoyed the front porch with porch swing and the peaceful scenery of horses in the pasture with a backdrop of mountain ridges. The sounds of the nearby mountain stream add to the calm. The house is full of character - defintely not the typical vacation rental. The loft bedroom is great for the children and has beautiful views from the upstairs windows (my favorite is the full moon over the pasture with mountains surrounding and a cool breeze blowing through the open window.) Our children had a great time feeding the chickens and finding and eating farm fresh eggs. Our 2 yr old delighted in watching Lucy, the pig, eat our table scraps and in petting Solomon, the donkey. Hearing and watching Solomon bray was quite an experience too! Our 6 yr old son really enjoyed his fishing experience at the farm pond. Our 12 yr old daughter enjoyed some horseback riding. We all had fun. It was hard to say goodbye to the Old Farmhouse to return home.

I would like to share our experience at the Old Farmhouse in the mountains. It was just something unique! Oh, and I also found it kind of romantic, too...because I didn't need to work there, but enjoy the view (beautiful and peaceful) and look at the animals. So, my husband, me and our two young kids (3 and 1 year old) spent a week at the Old Farmhouse in July. The house is clean, organized and has everything you need. When it rained outside kids found enough toys and books to entertain themselves. To be honest, I had to hide some house plants because our 1y.o. boy was pulling leaves apart. During the day we went to playgrounds in the area and did a little bit of sightseeing. And in late afternoons kids went to feed chicken, Lucy (pig), and Solomon (donkey) and then collect eggs. What a surprise it was to find out that a certain breed of hens lay light green color eggs. Very nice looking eggs :-). We didn't do any horseriding but our kids liked to look at the horses from afar. The hosts are very friendly people who like sharing their experience on the farm. But if you are not into that, they won't bother you either. By the way, I should be truthful about the 'God's AC' at the house. For us, it was great (my husband was very happy to escape A/C at our house in Charlotte). However, if it's hot outside during the day and you're a person who likes an indoor temperature to be in the 60's, you might not enjoy sleeping in one of the beds upstairs at the beginning of the night, but it does get cooler after 2am, I'd say. It's very comfortable to sleep downstairs day or night since it's very cool there. We would definitely recommend the Old Farmhouse as your vacation destination and we would like to go back at least once more when kids are a bit older.

We decided to stay at The Old Farmhouse after hearing about friends of ours experience there. They we right! The home is very cozy and very clean. It is stocked with everything you can think of and is extremely kid friendly. Our children had the time of their lives and certainly made life long memories. They fed the animals, rode the horses, played with the dogs, collected eggs (more than I know what to do with!), watched the chipmunks and hummingbirds. Walton and Betty were so generous with their time and taught us so much about living on a farm. While we were there we saw baby chicks hatch! The Scenary on the property is Breathtaking, the peaceful sounds of the animals and the birds along with the stream running made us never want to leave. We look foward to going back again!

My entire family enjoyed our stay at the Old Farmhouse. My wife and I enjoyed watching our 2 boys (ages 6 and 9) running to catch fireflys in the front yard. They spent hours swinging on the rope swing. We also appreciated the time Walton and Betty spent with us talking about farm life. It is a beautiful property and very peaceful. This is not your average vacation rental. I would highly recommend it!

Staying at the Old Farmhouse was a dream come true for me. The picture- perfect area coupled with life on a farm is the best of both worlds. Also, you could not ask for nicer people to deal with than Betty and Walton. Thank you for making my stay the way I always imagined life in the mountains could be. Patti Levine-Brown

Our family weekend at the Old Farmhouse in Todd was absolutely magical! Walton Conway was a very gracious host! The house felt like home from the minute we walked in. My 5 year old daughter had the time of her life. She got to ride a horse, feed the chickens and Lucy the Pot Bellied Pig and Solomon the Donkey. We gathered eggs and had them for dinner. It was simply a fantastic experience; wonderful family weekend. We didn't want to leave. And to top it off, we got snow! Wow, if you are looking for down home hospitality and a farm experience you will never forget; you have to plan a visit here! You will not be disappointed!

Quaint Farm Stay in Boone

Guest: Shana1234 (Cary, NC)
Date of Stay: 08/08/08 Review Submitted: 08/14/10

My husband and I took our 1 year old son to celebrate all our our summer birthdays. My son loved seeing the chickens, Solomon the Donkey and Lucy the Potbellied Pig up close. We enjoyed having the privacy of our own house while still being on the owner's property vs. a bed and breakfast and my husband appreciated the fresh eggs he was allowed to gather that we could keep for breakfast. Our family is mainly vegan due to our concern over factory farming issues so the fact that we could have TRULY free range eggs was very nice. Overall we had a nice stay and would recommend it if you are looking for a quiet vacation with a farm feel.

Calming Serenity

What a fantastic place! The house was so beautiful and magically peaceful. It was quaint yet had ALL the amenities needed, plus some! The landlords made us feel so welcome with fresh eggs and offers of anything we needed. They allowed our children to gather eggs, feed the chickens, and ride horses. The surrounding areas of Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, and more, offered more fun things than can be squeezed into a weeks' stay! Our family of four got a renewed sense of calm and we can't wait to go back!

We had a great time! The house was very comfortable with a nice, secluded location. We loved the eggs. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. No snow on travel days and lots of snow during our stay. The kids, who haven't seen snow in years, could not get enough. Your location in the mountains and hills added to the fun. Thanks for accommodating us on such short notice. You helped create a memorable weekend.

All of us thoroughly enjoyed The Old Farm House. Three kids were beside themselves with the animals and the "loft." It felt so much like we were at home; I did not want to come back to my "real home." I want to live like that some day and am praying that we will be able to have as nice a farm as yours. Your hospitality and kindness are unmatched. We would not change one single thing to make our stay better, not one. Lucy was the best "greeter" ever!
