The nearby beach on Lake Michigan is sandy (not rocky) and slopes out gradually into the water - great for jumping waves. Bonfires are permitted - but please leave the beach area clean.
Riverwalk area in Manistee (only 20 minutes away) is a must see and leads you down to Lake Michigan and lighthouse. Frankfort with its public Lake Michigan Beach and shopping and dining is only 30 minutes away north on M22 - one of the prettiest drives in Northern Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes is approximately 45 minutes away, and Traverse City is one hour away.
