The Village:
Popiglio’s shaded medieval alleyways wind across the south-facing slope of a foothill in the Montagna Pistoiese, with a nostalgic scent of wood-smoke, and moody murmuring from the gorge of the river Lima. Cooler than the plains on summer evenings, and much greener, at 500 meters altitude, an unique and accessible starting point for exploring Tuscany in any season.
Accommodation:
The 1st. & 2nd. floor apartment conjoins the (English) owners’ house, which was completely renovated from adjoining buildings dating from the 1570's. The owners are on hand to be of any assistance. The apartment has its own front door off an entrance hall. Roughly 150 sqm, it comprises three double bedrooms, living-room, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeps six, eight or more. Total privacy: the walls are 60 cm thick.
Local Amenities & Attractions:
Popiglio is a friendly village, welcoming to our visitors of all nationalities. Pharmacy and post office, bakery and food shops, bar/pizzeria, parking and bus stops are all within 100-200m.
10mins drive: for other shopping, the lively market town of San Marcello Pistoiese.
20 mins: Bagni di Lucca, with its historic English associations, Grand Tour destination of Byron and Shelley. It has several excellent restaurants.
20-30mins: the typical romantic hill villages of Maresca, Gavinana, Vico Pancellorum, all with great family restaurants.
There are outdoor pools in spectacular settings at Bagni and Maresca.
45mins. brings you to any of the jewels of the region: Pistoia, a miniature Florence without the tourists; the elegant walled city of Lucca; and medieval hilltop Barga, popular with many Scots descendants of expatriate Italians.
1hr: Florence.
The area is known as the gateway to the National Park of the Apuan Alps and the hilltop villages of the Garfagnana. The region is also noted for Italy's largest ski centre, Abetone, less than 1/2hr. by car. Viareggio and the Italian riviera is just 1hr.
Retreat Facilities:
Some people are seeking not so much a holiday as renewal and reorientation from solitude spent in contemplation and meditation. The owners will sympathetically support anyone desiring the apartment for solitary or group retreat, with total or partial privacy. We can offer rates for shopping, cooking, and longer residence.
Course/Seminar Hosting Facilities:
The apartment and main house combined sleep 25-30, with four bathrooms in total and ample communal space indoors and out. These are highly suitable facilities for self-organising groups who hold residential courses - arts & crafts, spiritual, educational, health etc. Self-catering or meals provided. We are happy to discuss your complete needs. |
