We spent a wonderful three weeks at Bella Vista enchanted by the glorious view of the bay, visits from the birds, enjoying Rum punches on the deck and buying fresh fish from the fishermen. The cottage is beautiful, relaxing and very well equipped - our favourite was being able to see the sea from the shower! The village is friendly and we found everything we needed in the well stocked shops. There are a couple of good restaurants and bars in the village and lots of options for buying take outs. Our regular beach was the almost deserted Pirate's Bay which is well worth the 15-20 minute walk from the cottage. If you're interested in Turtle watching the NEST office is located on the beachfront in Charlotteville and you can arrange to go out turtle watching on the boats with Devon and Ancil who are both wonderful hosts. We rented a car for one week which is recommended if you want to see the island as public transport was quite unreliable and car rental isn't expensive. The Argyle Waterfall is beautiful and well worth climbing to the very top level. We would also recommend the beautiful Pigeon Point Heritage Park if lagoon-like turquoise sea and white sand is your thing. Fine dining with a great view can be found at The Seahorse Inn on Grafton Beach and we would recommend the experience of eating at 'Table for Two' with Elspeth who creates a meal just for two people each evening in her own house designed around you. We went snorkelling at Angel Reef and on to Little Tobago with Top Ranking Tours (office located in the Blue Waters Inn hotel in Speyside). Ask for a chap called Randy - he's a bit of a cliche at first but we really can't recommend him highly enough for going above and beyond to create a perfect trip. Last but by no means least, Violet and Peter were absolutely wonderful hosts; always there and happy to help if you needed them and fantastic company! We loved them and can't wait to go back! Owner response: Hi Sara and David we are so happy you had such a great time in Tobago and your stay at the cottage. We loved having you stay here, you are both lovely people. We can't wait to see you when you come back!
Our seven day stay at BVC was without doubt the most enjoyable and relaxing seven days we have ever spent on holiday.Firstly, the location of the cottage and its panoramic view of Charlotteville, the bay and the forest clad hills all around are sensational and breathtaking. We could have sat all day on the wide veranda and just watched the daily dramas of the squabbling parrots in the tree below, the bananaquits' relentless futile attempts to build a nest in our wind chime or the magnificent frigate birds effortlessly soaring above the bay. Needless to say the TV was totally redundant. The owners of the cottage, Violet and Peter are the perfect hosts, always on hand to offer advice and assistance if required. Violet organised our airport transfer with local driver,Jeb, who was most helpful, taking us to the main supermarket on the island to stock up with necessary provisions, which is a must do as the local shops in the village are not that well stocked beyond the basics. On route we also stopped off to buy fresh bread, fruit and vegetables and Jeb's knowledge of birds provided a running commentary on the rich wildlife that was on show.Thank you Jeb. The cottage and its facilities cater for all one's needs; it is very spacious and it's open aspect not only allows for a constant cooling breeze to waft throughout but also creates a feeling of living life out of doors. The sandy quiet beach in Man O' War bay is just a five minute stroll away and is excellent for swimming, however if you are looking for paradise then a longer walk over the headland to Pirates Bay is a must. You won't be disappointed. Backed by a forest thronged with birds, the beach is pure Robinson Crusoe and often virtually deserted. We sunbathed beneath hummingbirds and swam whilst Osprey and Pelican plunged for fish. The snorkelling wasn't bad either. Charlotteville itself is totally free from the trash of tourism and offers a true insight and experience of local life. The whole package is a little piece of heaven. We loved it so much we'll be going back again and again. Violet and Peter, thank you so much. Paul and Marilyn Coughlan

Absolutely lovely place!
Absolutely lovely place!
I had booked Bella Vista Cottage based on the reviews and the smart website but hadn't wanted to get too excited - from the photos it looked like a nice, basic little place with a modest terrace. We arrived with the lovely Jeb, who Violet arranged to pick us up from the airport and who couldn't have done more to help us by stopping at the supermarket and an amazing bakery, plus an impromptu viewpoint on the way! On arrival the cottage absolutely knocked my socks off - the view was amazing - so open and so beautiful! The cottage was so much bigger than I had thought from the photos, with a big kitchen area, well equipped and with a big breakfast bar area and a great big terrace that wrapped around all the living areas. Plenty of room for dining outdoors and a nice airy and spacious feel inside. We normally try to find a king size bed but the comfortable double was fine and we loved going to sleep with the sea breeze from the big open doors each night. Being able to open shutters all around gave it a lovely airy feel. The cottage is quite stylish in its own way, with a nice feel to it from the white painted wooden boards, wood floor, bifold doors and books lining the walls. The shower was good - nice and big with an open sea view across the terrace and an opportunity to scare your husband in the shower by popping up at the open window from the terrace. It was a bit of a trek to the village and certainly a stiff walk up the hill after, but the benefit is you have this lovely elevated view and nice breeze. We didn't mind the walk and we're not particularly active types! The walk to Pirates Bay is really nice and it's a very special beach to visit. Charlotteville itself is very charming. Eating out is more snack bar/kitchen than restaurant style, with a few places to choose from. Food is tasty but menus are limited. The roti from the little wooden bar in the middle of town is great. Self catering is a very enjoyable option at the cottage and you can pick up fresh fish from the fishermen each day. There are a couple of little shops to keep you going with the basics, but a big supermarket shop on the way would be advisable. Overall I can't recommend this place highly enough. Violet and Peter were so lovely and helpful, even after we'd left them, later in our trip, they helped us find an accommodation with their friend Trevor in the rainforest. I long to go back there one day and will definitely spend longer - a week would be perfect. Thank you Vi & Peter!

Bella Vista cottage: The Perfect Getaway
Bella Vista cottage: The Perfect Getaway
We loved our stay at Bella Vista Cottage and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a peaceful getaway. From Speyside, the Windward Road turns inland, climbing steeply upwards through jungle-like foliage before plummeting down to the opposite shoreline. Just before the descent, there's a stunning perspective over Charlotteville from Bella Vista Cottage, revealing the houses dotting the hillside down to the calm waters of Man-o-war Bay. The sleepy fishing village, the many boats and sailing vessels moored in the bay, and the beach can all be seen from the deck surrounding two sides of the cottage. We spent many restful hours on the deck sipping cocktails, listening to music and watching the stunning view and a variety of beautiful and interesting tropical birds. There is a bird feeder on the deck to encourage visitations from small birds called the bananaquit or sugar bird. Parrots, pelicans and cocricos are just some of the birds we saw as well as the resident peacocks browsing in the yard. Bella Vista Cottage, is owned and operated by Vi and Peter Quesnel, two fun and personable people who are eager to see that you have a pleasant and relaxing time. The cottage, a retreat of soothing tranquility, was clean and had all the comforts of home in an open concept design. Perfectly set up for indoor/outdoor living, it is breezy and tropical and lulls you into feeling that you don't have a care in the world. Although it has wi-fi, we felt like we had walked into another world, much slower-paced and romantic, and contact with the outside world was unnecessary. Bella Vista Cottage is within a short walk down the hill to the beach, the local fishing areas for fresh fish, and the village for light shopping and supplies. There is another secluded beach, Pirate's Bay, hidden at the other side of the village about a 20 minute walk along a track. Any local can point you in the right direction. There are some restaurants and bars in town if you don't feel like cooking. Benches along the sea wall, the pier and a covered pavilion are popular socializing spots. I'm sure you will love Bella Vista Cottage and Charlotteville as much as we did.

Owner response: Thank you for the review. We are very happy to know you had such a lovely time at Bella Vista Cottage. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit. Violet and Peter
We loved our 10 days in Bella Vista. It started with a warm welcome from our friendly hosts who gave us a tour of the open and airy Bella Vista. There is plenty of room to move around, ample storage space, and a well equipped kitchen. You wake up and walk out onto the deck to look at the sweeping views of the bay. We enjoyed breakfast on the deck where you have great viewing stand to observe village life. You can watch the fishing boats come in and then just take a stroll down to the village to buy fresh fish. Bella Vista was clean and comfortable; and if you want fresh air, and to get away from it all you must come stay here. Violet and Peter were there if you needed any information, however they did leave a very informative welcome package. There are plenty of books available and having the wifi was convenient. We did have a car so we could explore the island. Charlotteville does have several restaurants but on recommendation from our hosts we took a drive to King's Bay Cafe, about a 20 minute drive. Here we ate fresh food at affordable prices. We ate here several times. They will also deliver if you do not feel like moving from the deck. Enjoy Charlotteville and Caribbean Sea at Bella Vista, thanks Peter and Violet.
