Keywords: Cottage
Built in the 19th century by a fisherman, this charming home overlooks one of the most photographed coves in Maine. In the heart of a small town, you can:
* Watch the lobster boats coming and going all day long
* Have cocktails on the deck overlooking Mackerel cove, Lowell cove and Merriconeag Sound while the sunset casts its glow on the water
* Enjoy a chowder supper at the village church down the street
* Shop for local art at the gallery across the street
* Walk down to the dock to pick your own lobsters
* Walk to the ocean and watch the crashing surf
* Pick blueberries, raspberries or rhubarb from your own backyard
* Cut flowers from the gardens frequently painted by local artists
The house is cozy but free-flowing, so you will never get cabin fever, but Brunswick and Bath are nearby should you develop a yen for "city life," and Freeport - with all its discount shops- is only a half hour away.

Why the Owner Chose Bailey Island
We discovered Bailey Island when our younger daughter, Maggy, was a student at Bowdoin. We rented a wonderful house overlooking Little Harbor for several years. We can hardly believe how lucky we are to have had the opportunity to buy this wonderful house on Mackerel Cove. The house was formerly owned by the owner of the General Store, Phil Johnson, who lived there with his sister. She was the one initially responsible for the beautiful gardens which we have inherited.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
Walking down to the cove to buy lobsters. Working in the garden and breathing in the ocean air. Sitting in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the cove and reading a good book. Cocktail hour on the deck overlooking both coves and the sound.

Cozy Cottage with Friends

We recently stayed with friends on Bailey Island at Two Coves. It is a lovely location and the cottage is really vintage Maine. We stayed with two other couples and so the fact that there are three bathrooms was great. The only thing I might mention is that one bedroom has a trundle bed, so this may not be the best sleeping for some people. The bedrooms open one onto another as in many older homes and there is a back stairway down to the kitchen from the master bedroom. The kitchen was very easy to use and well stocked. The dining area is great in the AM, but does get very sunny for the dinner hour. The deck is lovely and relaxing and you can watch Bailey Island wake in the morning and head out for lobsters. The Giant Stairs are great to walk to and very close as well as the general store and Giant Stairs Cafe, which has great food. It is a lovely place to get away from it all and to relax. For an ATM or gas you really need to think about that in Brunswick which is about 15 minutes away and Bath is very close and a great day trip.
Owner response:Thank you for your lovely review. We love hearing from you! Yes, the children's room does have a trundle bed, as noted on the amenities listing. It is best for children or adventurous adults. I might add that later dinners bring magnificent sunsets. We are delighted that you had a nice vacation and hope you will come back again. Best regards, Ann Mitchell

Wonderful cottage and amazing views!! Our visit was July 2011. My husband and I had never been to Maine and didn't truly know what to expect. It went beyond our expectations. The cottage is so quaint and lovely! It is definitely the most photographed point on the island!! All the amenities of home plus amazing views over Mackerel Cove with gorgous sunsets! The kitchen was fully stocked. Weather was wonderful and the breeze off the water was perfect! Casco Bay if beautiful! The people of Bailey Island are extremely warm and friendly. We walked down to Glenn's Lobster on the dock and got the most amazingly delicious fresh lobster! It was wonderful dealing with Heather Allen at Your Island Connection, LLC for our rental - she was very accommodating and made the entire process painless!

All we expected was a charming cottage for a quick get-a-way. We went for just a night and ended up staying for over a week! You will not believe the views! This must be the most beloved cove view in the whole state. By the way, we had Lobsters about 14 different ways during our stay, but the best way was cold leftovers in cocktail sauce on the deck..because who could leave the view!! Our daughter Ruth just would not leave the tire swing on MACKEREL COVE and we went to the beach over the bridge nearly every day. Check out the Giant Steps too! Now our daughter says this is her COVE forever...so I guess we are going to be regulars. Next time maybe we will go for a week and end up staying a month. At least we still have the painting we bought at the gallery across the street -- the one that is also the old charming library hall.
