Lovely family cottage on a beautiful island off the coast of Nova Scotia, this holiday property is perfect for a family of two to five, two couples, adult singles, or small groups wanting to escape from their daily routine to a private oasis in the sun. With its own wonderfully secluded beach of sand and stone, its ocean vistas, its many colourful gardens, and its fields of wild flowers, this holiday property is a haven for songbirds, eagles, sea birds of all kinds, and Island wildlife.
With its miles of solitary shoreline, you can spend hours beachcombing, fossil hunting, and seal watching, and if you look carefully, you might even spot a whale! The Northumberland Strait is the warmest salt water north of the Carolinas. Our beach is one giant sandbar and it is perfect for family swimming! Hours can be spent playing in tidal pools on the rocks, building sand castles, and enjoying all the other delights associated with vacationing at the beach.
Solar-powered, the cottage is on two levels. It has an open-plan kitchen and living-room, master bedroom, and bathroom with shower on the main level.Upstairs there is one bedroom with a three-quarter size spool bed as well as a single, and another room we call 'the snug' - a place to read, have a nap on the single bed, or play board games on a rainy day, complete with a wooden chest full of toys and crafts. The cottage also has a glass-fronted, airtight wood-burning stove for any chilly nights.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would ever need, even for the adventurous cook. With its pantry well stocked with staples, you can step outside to the kitchen garden, pick your herbs and veggies, barbecue your kabobs on the deck, and have a peaceful meal at the patio set under the umbrella.
Additionally, there is a wonderful family library which includes reference books on astronomy, wildlife, sealife, the flora and fauna of Nova Scotia, as well as an eclectic collection of child and adult fiction. The cottage also has a stereo with a varied selection of CD's. Bringing your own laptop will enable you to dial up to the Internet from home, or if you do not wish to travel with your computer, there is public Internet access at the Island’s Community Centre. There is a home phone at the cottage which you are welcome to use, as well.
Outdoor games include croquet, bocce and horseshoes. There are wooden lawn chairs scattered about the property, as well as a hammock in the trees by the sea.
For morning coffee, an afternoon siesta, or a martini before dinner, you can relax in the screened porch just off the deck. You could even sleep the night there under the stars, listening to the waves lap upon the shore.
The Pictou Island night sky is like no other. There are no electric lights to camouflage your view of the constellations and shooting stars, and the moon over the water. We have even seen the Northern Lights! Finish the day watching fireflies and roasting marshmallows in the chiminea on the deck.
You might want to know that Pictou Island is five miles long and one mile wide, is home to under 20 people year-round, and has a number of privately-owned summer cottages. You access the island via a passenger ferry, the schedule link which you will find below. We will greet you at the Pictou Island wharf to take you to your island home.
The Island is wonderful in that there are no stores, which of course means that you will bring your food and supplies with you. Groceries can be ordered for Tuesday delivery, or one can go ashore for a day of sightseeing, shopping, and laundry. Pictou is steeped in history, as the Ship Hector carried some of Canada’s earliest Scottish settlers to its shores in 1773. Visit the replica of the ship moored next to the museum, tour the Grohman Knife factory, browse in the shops in the area, and have lunch on the water front.
Surrounded by the warm water of the Strait, the Island is in its glory during September and October. You might want to consider booking then if your summer is tied up.
