Need a relaxing vacation? Then you will all enjoy the sugar white sands and emerald green waters of Mexico Beach. Called the "Forgotten Coast" Mexico Beach and the surrounding area is reminiscent of Old Florida. Spend the day lounging on the beach, go deep sea fishing or scalloping in season, then return for an outside shower fix yourself a cool drink and enjoy the gorgeous sunset views from the screened porch or deck. There's nothing more tranquil than the roll of the surf.

Our home sits on a bluff across the street from the Gulf of Mexico. There are no homes on the beach so you have 180 degree view all the time. Just walk straight across Highway 98 to the beach that sometimes is almost deserted. Even on holiday weekends the beaches are not crowded. Pick up shrimp from the "Old Captain" a few blocks east, who sells it right out of his front yard and bring it back to cook on the expansive shaded porch under the house. We even have a TV on the porch so the men won't miss any sports while they are cooking.

We purchased Sassy Mermaid so our family would have a getaway from the demanding real estate business in Destin. When I get grumpy they all say, "Mom, when was the last time you went to Mexico Beach?" A nice way of saying, go take a break. Both my children have spent their honeymoons here and as you can see by my last picture, we also have a baby grandaughter, Lili who loves the beach now. There are all the comforts of home here. We decorated it in a Shabby Chic, Ralph Lauren sort of way; so you can be comfortable and not worry about sand and wet bathing suits. Bring your boat, kayaks and water toys. There is plenty of room to park them under the house.

The Gulf of Mexico is very calm here, no undertows to have to watch out for. Children can swim and enjoy shelling without you having to worry for their safety. Take a ride out to Cape San Blas to the State Park and enjoy miles of untouched beaches, go golfing nearby, ride horses on the beach at Indian Pass, eat at the local restaurants and if you get too sunburned go shopping in Appalachicola one of the most quaint cities in Florida.

My girlfriends and I are addicted to two shops down there, Avenue E and Blue. If you love antiques mixed with art, gifts and the latest in accessories, these shops are the best. The men can sit outside on the bench or go eat oysters down the street while you browse.

Fall is one of the greatest times in Mexico Beach as the shells start rolling in. Collect enough to make your own shell mirror to take home. Well if I haven't convinced you yet that this is "Paradise" just give me a call for more information or book your family vacation now.

"A Sassy Mermaid Beach House"

Year Purchased: 2005

Why the Owner Chose Mexico Beach

I walked past this home in early 2005 and it just called to me. The location was one of the best in Mexico Beach. You could see for 180 degrees off the upstairs deck and it had that amazing garden walk through down to the Gulf of Mexico. I wasn't sure how I was going to buy it as I already had a couple of investments in Mexico Beach, but it was for certain I was going to find a way and I did. When the real estate market became so difficult, I decided it was a good time to share Sassy Mermaid with others. According to what everyone writes in my guest book, they all love the beach, the shells and the sunsets off the upstairs deck. A few of them love the shaded deck downstairs where they can watch sports on the TV and cook out.

The Unique Benefits at this Beach House

The poodle and I love to walk the beach from Gulf County East. Sometimes we walk so far we wonder how we will get home. We collect shells and she plays with the children and other dogs she meets along the way. I also love to ride my bike around to see what is for sale, pending or sold since I was last there. There is also some of the best shops around Mexico Beach, Port St. Joe and Applachicola. I can even get Jerry to go to Appalachicola when I am shopping, he finds the oyster bar. We sometimes take our boat, go scalloping or take a ride down the intracoastal. That is a wonderful boat trip, where you can see all kinds of birds, trees and an occasional alligator. It is great fun to grab a flashlight and look for crabs at night. Even if it rains, you can curl up with a good book and just enjoy the sound of the surf.

Owner's Map of Mexico Beach

I am the broker/owner of Southern Beach Realty, a small, successful real estate company in Destin, Florida. I live with my husband, Jerry and our Standard Poodle, Sadie on the bayou near Sandestin. I love to garden and just recently completed my Master Gardners certification. I spend a few hours a month volunteering in our community helping keep Eden Gardnes, Western Lake and other areas looking beautiful. We spend time with our 5 adult children and 9 grandchildren, boating, kayaking, fishing and swimming in our back yard. Jerry is a fantastic outdoor chef and we love to entertain. When time permits we head to Mexico Beach to get away from it all. Our oldest grandchild plays baseball for LSU and we enjoy watching him on TV and occasionally go to the games in Baton Rouge. The youngest is one and she is pictured with her father at the Sassy Mermaid in Mexico Beach on our website. My children have both spent their honeymoons there and now are bringing their children. I love my real estate business, assisting people find their dreams, teaching my younger agents and don't see retirement in my near future. The agents tease me that I will come kayking across the bayou at age 75 looking for my checks. We shall see what the future has in store. The picture of me is in 1965 Lifeguarding at Pensacola Beach. It is hard to get the sand out of my shoes.
