Split our Hawaiian holiday between the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and the calm vibe of the immaculate open palms property. Traveling solo with my toddler was sure simplified with the comforts of home here...a massive monkey pod tree swing keeping us busy endlessly, the overall proximity to town and the stellar Lanikai beach just reminded me of how great traveling really is.

Amazing place to stay with kids!

That was our first and very successful experience with VRBO.com .Open Palm Plantation offers very spacious and comfortable guest house. You can find everything what you need for your stay.House is very clean and well decorated, kitchen has all basic equipment.Beds are very comfortable.Kitty gave us many valuable tips about local beaches and stores and provided maps and travelling guides. The property is huge and there was enough place to run and play with Hunter the dog for our 4 year old son, and for us to relax and enjoy serenity of this place.Waimanalo beach is just 5 minutes away, but we preferred to go to Lanikai which is about 15 minutes away as it is better for small kids. If we come to Oahu again we would definitely choose to experience Kitty's incredible hospitality again.

If there is heaven on earth.....this must be it. My husband and I stayed at Open Palmsfor our final week of a 4 week vacation on the Hawaiin islands. Owner Kitty, has created a delightful, serene place for her guests. Our vacation rental was clean, spacious and very comfortable, with many added touches that you will not find in most vacation rentals (kitchen and bath products). Kitty is such a warm and welcoming vacation rental owner. I would recommend this rental to those looking for a quiet, relaxing, place to stay. Thanks Kitty for making us feel so welcome.....and hugs for Hunter (retriever pup). Laurie and Randy

We hit Kitty's place with me, the Lady + 13 and 17 year old boys. We all had different expectations and Kitty exceeded them all. The boogie boards, beach chairs, snorkeling gear, umbrellas, ice chest were all in good repair. The lawn, deep green, soft St Augustine, kept the frisbee players and Kitty's all ears, huge paws and little butt Retriever, Hunter, in fine shape. The beds, linens, rugs and appliances exceeded expectations. The rooms are spacious and airy. The Pali looms over the backyard with the Hawaiian Gods overseeing the goings on from their aeire shrouded by morning fog. The BBQ area is suitable for dancing while preparing umbrella drinks. Kitty sent us off to Hanauma Bay for skin diving. We returned sun burned, a wee bit coral scraped and slack jawed with the magnificent profusion of large aquarium worthy fish oblivious of our presence. The proximity to everything was perfect yet when we were out galavanting we wanted to get back to Paradise to listen to the profusion of birds, plant ourselves in a chair, grab a cold one from the reefer and savor Paradise. I will be back. Yeah and the Lady + kids are planning the next escapade in the near future.

From the moment we drove into the Open Palms Plantation we knew we had made the right choice for our accomodations in Oahu! We were met by Kitty (the most gracious owner/hostess) and made to feel right at home. She gave us a short tour of our place and ensured us if we needed anything all we had to do was ask. Our private cottage was more than just a place to stay, it was clean, comfortable, and large enough to not get that "closed-in" feeling of a hotel room. Thanks to the kitchen being well-stocked with everything we needed to cook some of our meals, we were able to make our own breakfasts, and sit out on the deck, which was a HUGE plus! we got the feeling of being in Hawaii back in the 1950's - no hustle-bustle, which we need at our age. The grounds were beautifully kept. The palm trees swaying in the breeze were filled with coconuts. We loved being able to see the two horses grazing just below our deck. We brought our binoculars, and were able to do a little bird-watching. Only minutes away from the beautiful beaches, we found ourselves wanting to walk for exercise. If we wanted to go to town and be with the crowds, we only had to drive a short distance, and we were there. It wasn't long before we were headed back to the serenity of our little home-away-from-home. We are definitely going back to Oahu, and can't imagine staying anywhere else......The Open Palms Plantation gives new meaning to the word "Paradise". This is what Hawaii is all about. Thanks!!

My husband and two daughters stayed at this awesome vacation home. It was beautiful, clean and felt like home. Our flight came in late and Kitty stayed up to welcome us and show us around. She was super friendly and provided lots of extras for us. Our girls loved meeting the horses, cat, dog and birds. Kitty made us feel at ease and like family. Thanks so much Kitty! This was our first time using VRBO and if we ever go to Oahu again, we would love to stay here! I highly recommend Kitty's beautiful vacation home.

My wife and I stayed at Kitty's place while on our honeymoon. We couldn't have been happier with our accommodations. Kitty met us when we got there, even though it was around 11:00 p.m. There was everything we needed, beach chairs, towels, mats, boogie boards, the works. Kitty goes out of her way to make sure all your needs are met. We will definitely be returning to Open Palms when we visit Hawaii again.

Our stay at the Open Palms Plantation was not long enough. Kitty's hospitality and the comfort and beauty of the property exceeded our expectations. Our 2 year old son loved being able to run around the property, swing from the gorgeous monkey pod tree, pet the horses, and look at the peacock. The grounds of Open Palms are meticulously kept by owner Kitty. It is obvious she takes much pride in the property. The home is located minutes from restaurants, shops and beaches. We very much enjoyed our stay and hope that we will one day return to the Open Palms Plantation for another amazing vacation!

A trip to Remember

Guest: Shelly (Deming, NM )
Date of Stay: 08/07/11 Review Submitted: 08/16/11

Ok so my family just returned from our 1st vacation to Hawaii and stayed for a week @ the open palms plantation. Kitty, is genuinely the kindest person and made us feel right at home. My boys ages (3 & 5) are normally really shy and dont really take to anyone, but not in this case. They had a wonderful time helping and observing all Kitty was doing throughout our stay. The highlight for them was the bonfire she made for us and the kids roasted marshmallows. The view from either of the rooms was incredible, and the huge tree infront was always alive with different birds. The unit were very comfortable and lovely. My kiddos normally do not play for very long outside @ home, but it was a task to try and get them to come in. When we did pull them away to go sightseeing or doing other things, they were asking if it was time to go back to open palms in under an hour! During the evenings we were able to hang out and relax out on the patio and enjoy our surroundings. Open Palms is very quiet and relaxing and quite a relief from the hustle and bustle of waikikki or honolulu. The pictures on the website are awesome but they do not do the place justice..IT is just breathetaking when you drive up. Anything we needed was already in the units, and if there was anything else Kitty was sure to have it. Also it is really close to town for shopping and dining. I loved the Shack..thanks for recommending it kitty. All I can say is that "if" you decide to stay here, you definitely will NOT be disappointed. I can not wait to return with my family.

(The Japanese follows later. ???????????) My family has actually returned here again following our last visit in Jul2010. Our expectation never fails in spending beautiful and unforgettable time here, at Open Palms Plantation. And this year, too... Kitty, the owner, is so kind enough in supporting my family life here together in all aspects. For your information - : 1) the entire site is so large with comfortable spacious garden with a big tree located at center where a swing is hanging on. Children always enjoy in swinging and running around. 2) very clam and relax space where family private is totally kept like being at own home. 3) the beautiful scenery with dynamic mountain view from the garden. 4) best place to do self-healing and relaxation under the tree. 5) easy access to wonderful beaches - Kailua, Lanikai and Waimanalo beach etc. 6) beach chairs, mats, towels, boogie boards, fins etc. for beach activities are also provided (no need to prepare by yourself). 7) Kailua town is located nearby – good for shopping and restaurants – take-out delicious lunch boxes also available. 8) Honolulu (Waikiki) less than 30 minutes by car. 9) Spacious room for family comfort (see pictures!). 10) Pretty animals welcome us – dog, horses, peacock, doves, and many birds – with singing… This everything has set all together here! You never miss them all if you like. My family will come back again soon…again. Mahalo, Kitty! We cannot begin to describe this wonderful rental. Our grandchildren were thrilled the minute we arrived! Our stay was nine days and it was so hard to leave. Kitty, the owner, was so accommodating and went out of her way to assist us when we needed medical care (something we did not expect). She was so friendly and our grandson sought her out everyday with questions about island life. The accommodations were superior and one of our favorite things was to sit outside, barbecue our dinner, and enjoy the privacy of our own outdoor eating area. This rental is convenient to several beaches, quaint towns, and a short drive from all the tourist attractions one might want to see. Snorkeling and boogie boarding were tops on the grandchildren's favorites. This is our first experience with VRBO rentals and I will not hesitate to use this again in vacation planning. I would recommend this rental to couples as well as families. Thank you Kitty for sharing your special "Slice of Heaven" with us!

My husband and I stayed at Open Palms for part of our Oahu vacation last month. We brought our 2 year old daughter and my mother as well. The studio + attached bedroom offered plenty of room for all of us. Kitty was very helpful and accommodating. Our daughter LOVED playing on the grounds--lots of room to run around. We practically had to drag her away when it was time to go sightseeing. (O.k., that's a lie--we really DID have to drag her away...) Open Palms is a real getaway treat. It's relatively easy to get to Honolulu or anywhere else on the island (probably about 30 minutes from Open Palms to Pearl Harbor area), but it's secluded enough to feel that you've escaped it all. We did a lot of touring about the island, but I think our vacation would have been just as nice if we had only gone back and forth between the house and Bellows Beach. (Nicest beach that we visited on the island, btw.) Kitty, thank you!

My retreat from reality

Guest: Dee (Albuquerque, New Mexico USA)
Date of Stay: 05/25/11 Review Submitted: 06/30/11

I just returned from spending a month at Open Palms Plantation and I am already dreaming of when I can return. Being there was like being part of a beautiful postcard, only better. It was better because while you were there, the postcard came alive. The white doves flew down and ate from your hand, the coconut trees dropped fresh coconuts, and the grass was like a thick expensive carpet. The mountains were a spectaular backdrop for all of this. It all made for a very relaxing retreat from reality. The nearby beaches were beautiful and were never very crowded even on the weekends. My grandson came to spend a week with me and do you how rare it is to never once hear a teenager say “I’m bored”. The owner Kitty was very gracious and surprised us by having boogie boards and snorkeling equipment for the both of us. The nearby towns provided all the shopping we needed without going to Honolulu but the property is centrally located and easy to get to the other parts of the island for sightseeing and shopping. The accommodations were also great. The rooms were clean and spacious, with many extras provided. I was able to cook in the kitchen and when I felt like it I could sit out on the patio, having a glass of wine while enjoying the scenery and cooking out on the BBQ. I know that everyone has their own preferences, but when I go to Hawaii, I like to feel like I am in Hawaii. Open Palms gives you that and more. I would highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone wanting or needing a relaxing getaway and just pray that it is available the next time I am able to once again escape to “my own personal postcard”.

Open Palms Plantation Is an Amazing Place to Stay with Magnificent Views!!!

Date of Stay: 04/19/11 Review Submitted: 06/05/11

Where do I start!!! My family and I spent a week at Open Palms Plantation over Easter 2011! We had the most relaxing and fabulous vacation ever!!! Our suite was very comfortable, clean and relaxing. We had lots of room and even rented the additional bedroom that we didn't need since the suite was so spacious! Kitty, the owner, has everything so well equipped! Our daughters (12 and 10) enjoyed the beautiful yard and mountain views (they truly are magnificent), swinging in the monkey tree, and feeding the birds every morning. They even had the privilege of meeting "Charlie" the peacock!!! We had a fantastic vacation on Oahu visiting the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, the Dole Pineapple Plantation and lots of snorkeling and kayaking on the windward side. At the end of every fun-filled day, we looked forward to spending a relaxing evening home whether it be a quiet evening bon-fire, a grilling our dinner on the patio or just snuggling on the sofa. For these reasons and so many more, we chose Open Palms Plantation over other options. Our desire was to stay away from all of the hustle & bustle and Open Palms was PERFECT!!! We truly enjoyed the peaceful and relaxing setting that we had hoped! We will undoubtedly stay at Open Palms again on our next visit to Oahu!!! Open Palms Plantation truly is "A Slice of Heaven" on Earth!!! Kitty, "thank you" once again for your wonderful hospitality!!! Aloha!

Our stay at the Plantation was wonderful. The area was very peaceful and the views of the mountains were spectacular. For a quiet, peaceful vacation we would definitely recommend staying here. We were just a few minutes away from, we believe, the nicest beaches in Hawaii. Kitty was very helpful and accommodating. For example, checkout time is at 11:00am but on that day our flight didn't leave until 8pm. Kitty made arrangements for us to shower at 4:00pm that afternoon so we could spend our last day at the beach. The area is within easy driving distance to Waikiki and Honolulu and an hour from the North shore. We highly recommend this accommodation for anyone who wishes to vacation away from the hectic pace of Waikiki.

We’ve visited Oahu several times and stayed at some wonderful places, but after our experience at Open Palms this past Valentine’s week, we swore we’ll never stay anywhere else on the island. Kitty is one of the most kind, thoughtful people we’ve had the pleasure to meet, and she went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. She picked us up from the airport at 2am after our flight was delayed, provided boogie boards and other beach essentials, and even left a freshly cracked coconut (2 straws) on our doorstep our last night there. On an island full of warm and friendly people, Kitty stands out. As for the location, it was so serene and perfect that we had a hard time leaving, even to take the five minute drive to Waimanalo Beach. The mountain view, the horses that grazed on palm fronds under our window every morning… I can’t say enough good things about it. Due to a scheduling conflict on our part, we spent our last night at a nice hotel in Waikiki where we paid so much more for so much less. Next trip- and I hope it’s soon- we’re calling Kitty first and the airline second. Enjoy, and tell Kitty that Joel and Marie say hi.

Beautiful, relaxing, and great for kids

Guest: Kate (Walla Walla, WA, USA)
Date of Stay: 11/22/10 Review Submitted: 12/02/10

My husband, 2 children and I just returned from 8 nights in the apartment attached to Kitty's house, and we loved our stay there. It was super-clean (new carpet just installed in main room) and comfortable. The grounds are truly lovely and our kids (ages 6 and 9) had a lot of fun running around on the lawn, exploring under the coconut trees, collecting coconuts, and playing on the swing. The main room is huge, with a comfy king sized bed and big screen TV. We added on the extra bedroom for the kids and it was fine for them -- Kitty brought a small futon-like bed for the floor for our son. The best view is actually from that room looking out on the giant tree in the center of the lawn. The kitchen is not set up for gournet cooking (small prep area, only 2 burner hot plate) but we did cook simple meals and used the nice grill outside also (fish!). Kitty was very helpful (brought over a blender upon request) but not intrusive at all -- we felt like we had a lot of privacy. We would recommend this property without hesitation. As for local attractions...we loved the Waimanalo beach -- long stretch of wide sandy beach, enough waves to use the boogie board, and not crowded, particularly on weekdays. Liked the Sweet Home Waimanalo restaurant just down the road (going to recreate their ginger honey lemonade at home!), as well as Dave's ice cream/shave ice store. We found lots of grocery stores and restaurants in Kailua a few miles north, and more lovely beaches at Kailua and Lanikai. It's an easy drive to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling, and we did a couple short hikes nearby also. There is some snorkel gear with the vacation rental as well as a giant beach bag, boogie boards, beach mats and chairs, towels, etc -- very convenient! Overall we had a fabulous time and would definitely return to that part of Oahu. Easy drive to Honolulu or Waikiki to visit, but much prefer the quiet and less-crowds of the windward side.

My husband and I recently stayed at Open Palms Plantation while visiting Oahu for our honeymoon. Kitty made us feel very welcome and helped us figure out the area, local shops and restaurants by providing us with maps, guide books, and giving us some tips on where to shop for the best prices. The setting is even more beautiful than the photographs on here represent! The views are truly amazing. Additionally, the unit was clean, comfortable, and an excellent room to come back to at the end of an exciting day exploring the island. The room is so nice that we even opted to spend one of our afternoons just hanging around the property. If you want to visit Oahu and enjoy some peace and quiet, away from the Honolulu crowds, Open Palms is definitely the best choice to make. We would recommend this location for anyone visiting Hawaii, for no matter how long the stay!

Open Palms Plantation is incredible.

We always knew that we wanted to visit the Kailua area for our first trip to Hawaii. We chose Open Palms based on reviews and some local advice about the area and couldn't have been happier. Here's why: 1.) We stayed in the separate guest house. It was very clean, had air conditioning, and all of the other amenities listed. I feel as though the few pictures don't do the guest house justice - it's much nicer and chic than the poor lighting in the photos would have you believe. Its location is also wonderful. Open Palms really is just a few minutes drive from various beaches and all of the shops in Kailua, exactly as listed. 2.) Kitty. She's warm, friendly, & helpful. When the wi-fi became a little weak she went out specifically to get a larger antenna so that I could do a tiny bit of work. She also pointed us to the choice beaches, the best places to park near those beaches, and some of the tastiest plate lunches you'll have. When she offered us the chairs, coolers, and boogie boards to accent our day trips to the beach, we felt more like family friends than renters. 3.) The area of Waimanalo is gorgeous. You're just surrounded by the lushness of the windward side wherever you go. The best recommendation I can give is this: my wife and I will be going on our 2nd trip to Hawaii soon and will be staying at Open Palms Plantation again. In fact, we planned our vacation around when the guest house was available again as we had such a great time last year. Really, you can't go wrong with this place.

Gorgeous, Peaceful and Relaxing

Guest: Boogie Board Laughter (Tacoma, WA)
Date of Stay: 06/23/09 Review Submitted: 07/05/09

Open Palms Plantation was the most perfect spot for our much needed vacation. We go to Hawaii to enjoy the beaches, boogie board, swim among the fish at Hanauma Bay, and most importantly relax. This location put us in the prime spot for our favorite beach, Waimanalo (5 min. away, not crowded, good waves). We got some great rides on the boogie boards. Hanauma Bay is a little further out, but not too far. And you cannot help but relax at Open Palms Plantation. As I said, it was perfect for us. Kitty was a gracious host who thinks of everything! There are beach towels, beach mats, boogie boards, beach chairs, a couple of coolers, etc. We were greeted with fresh flowers and chocolate in the room. When I got sick and was laid up, Kitty was so sweet. The studio is attached to the main house. It is extremely spacious and lovely. It is your own private spot and you do not even realize that there is someone next door. The open room invites gorgeous light through the skylights. Yet it is cool enough with the trade winds or the air conditioning. There is a beautiful yet lazy dog named Poseidon and a funny neighboring peacock named Charlie. Kitty has another room for rent that is in a separate building. It is a little more private. When we go back, I am not sure which room we will ask for. They are so different, but both have so much charm. We have stayed in 4 different locations in Oahu (avoiding the noisy, bustling hotels in Honolulu), and this was by far the best!

Thank you for providing us with such a wonderful place to spend our vacation. It was just perfect for Aaron. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our stay at Open Palms Plantation. Aaron will definately miss Reanna, as well as the horses and the cats. I'm just sorry that we were'nt able to stay longer as we hoped.2002

Open Palms Plantation means more than comfortable to my family. You prepared much more than anything that visitors would imagine. We did'nt ever expect that there are sun- screen and after-sun moisturizer ect.in the bathroom cabinet' but there they are. You are very thoughtful and considerate. All my family stayed at a wonderful place.2002

We spent long, guiet moments of joy, bliss, and eternal union on this, our honeymoon. And although we ran amuck, as tourist do, the most wonderful moments were those of quiet closeness, face to face in conversation and knowing each others heart. This place allowed those quiet moments and was the place of occurance of our greatest oneness. And in this the greatest blessing and accomplishment for our union and our honeymoon. In this, our honeymoon, has come to fruition and found it's greatest possible success. And in this we find supreme gratitude.

Our time in paradise

The Open Palms Plantation, main house accommodations were fairly represented on the website. Basically, what you see is what you get. I don't want to seem indifferent because we thoroughly enjoyed our week at OPP; but, I can't think of anything to say to improve on OPPs claim, "A slice of heaven in paradise." Truly, this is what you get for your money. A note about the owner: she is wonderful! She as very hospitable and helpful, but not nosey or pushy. We will definitely go back to OPP at our first opportunity!

Find Beauty and Comfort off the Beaten Path

The Open Palms Plantation is a fantastic place to stay!! It is situated in a residential pocket off of the highway and is perfect for those seeking to a unique stay. The plantation is picturesque, well maintained grounds and lush greenery....all at the base of the moutains which provide a breath-taking backdrop. Imagine falling asleep at night to the sounds of nature. Kitty, the super friendly host, goes above and beyond to ensure you have a great stay. Her cottage is clean and well maintained. Inside you can find everything you need plus lots of extras. She provides a basket of tolietries in the bathroom. Beach goers will be delighted to find a full size cooler, Boogie Boards, and lots of other water toys available for use. Waimanalo Beach is very close by (about 10 mins) and is one of Hawaii's best beaches. The beach is very long, sandy, and very safe for swimming. Best of all, it usually isn't super busy. Go there in the early morning and you feel like you have the beach all to yourself. Food and shopping is also close by. Overall a great experince that we definitely recommend. Mark and Michelle

Peaceful setting on busy Oahu

My family of three spent four days at Open Palms Planatation's cottage. The cottage is attached to the home on what appears to be three acres nestled close to very dramatic mountains on the windward side of the island. The location is tranquil, the accommodations comfortable and the amenities all you need. Your hostess exhibits the perfect blend of striving to meet your needs without becoming burdensome. The grounds are park like and the plantings shield you from neighborig properties that are not, for the most part, of the same quality. If you don't like the sounds and crush of humanity found in Honolulu this is the type of place you will want to stay. It is however typical of a country setting as the birds will be your alarm clock. Also there is evidence that some of the neighbors living on the same road do not take as much pride in their community as the owners of this rental as there was trash dumped along the road in one place. With the tunnels through the mountains it is a short and easy drive to Honolulu and the airport. I would recommend this rental for anyone not interested in a condo or hotel room in Honolulu.

Open Palms Plantation is the perfect get away

Where do I start. We have stayed here numerous times over the last 5 years and it truely is a home from home, apart from being set in Paradise of course. Kitty is great and has looked after us well over the years with all the gear for the beach and the impecable accomodation which is spotless. we travel some 8500 miles to get here and the first thing you want is to relax. This happens instantly followed by the short trip to the great beaches. Make a point of getting to Lanakai Beach, the best beach in hawaii and probably the world. The great barbeque area is well used, every night nearly, when we're not travelling around the island. The Sea Park is a few miles up the road, the place that "50 first dates" was filmed. Honolulu, the airport, Waikiki and tons of beaches are within 30 minutes which makes this the perfect place to be based. I would definately recommend the "Kitty" experience to all and often do. We will be back there in December and can't wait.
