Great Chebeague Island is located in picturesque Casco Bay just a short ferry ride from downtown Portland. Once the summer fishing grounds for native American Indians and home to the famous 'stone sloops' that carried quarried granite down the eastern seaboard, Chebeague now serves as home for 300 year round residents and over 2000 summer visitors.
The people of Chebeague are a diverse group of fisherman, artists, and professionals both young and old united by their common love of this uncommon island gem. It is an understatement to say Chebeague Island is a very special place so easy to fall in love with and so hard to leave after a visit.
The house is a classic turn of the century (1901) Greek Revival Cape style farmhouse characteristic of the older homes on the island. Situated on five acres of land, bordered by meadows, and woods, with ocean views over Casco Bay to the south, the house offers three bedrooms, two baths, a large living room, study, and kitchen/dining area for your stay.
From the house, it is a short walk down a winding lane to the quiet sand beach nearby. At low tide, the adventurous can cross the sand bar to deserted Little Chebeague Island for exploration. Only a short walk from the house, the community recreation center offers a gym, swimming pool and various exercise classes for those so inclined. Visitors enjoy golfing, biking, trips to the Island’s library, museum, and gift shops, and dining out and the Inn. There are many special events not to be missed like concerts, plays, art exhibits, kid's camps, bay cruise's, and more!
Chebeague is readily reached by numerous airlines serving Portland International Airport. It is important to arrive during the day if you plan to catch a ferry to Chebeague the same afternoon. Otherwise, you will need to stay overnight in the Portland area at one of the many fine hotels or bed and breakfast inns. Rental cars may be rented at the airport and parked at the Chebeague Island remote parking lot in Yarmouth from which a bus transports you to the ferry.
Alternatively, a ferry from downtown Portland may be taken directly to Chebeague. Chebeague is close to Freeport, home to L.L. Bean and many outlets stores, and is a short drive from numerous other charming coastal towns and attractions. Portland itself provides a fun day trip from Chebeague via the Casco Bay ferry. The Old Port District is full of quaint shops and eateries located along Portland’s cobblestone streets and brick buildings.
