Magic River is a beautiful five bedroom house in the even more beautiful Wintergreen mountains. The house is less than a five minute drive away from the ski slopes, golf courses, tennis courts, spa, and fine dining, that make up the Wintergreen resort.
When we bought the house, we were in love with the location--on a protected forest greenway, with a stream running through the woods and the Old Appalachian Trail right in our back yard. The house itself was beautiful, but too small. But because we loved the location so much, we expanded the house. We remodeled the kitchen extensively, to provide ample counter space and a good dining area. We doubled the size of the living room, which is now spacious and open. We added two new bedrooms, including a second master with a double-head shower. We built a deck overlooking the woods and the stream. We installed a state-of-the-art "tankless" water heater that is not only better for the environment, it also allows you to take as many showers in a row as you like without ever running out of hot water.
Then we furnished it. Large TV set with cable, DVD, and surround sound. All new beds. ("The most important thing is that the beds are comfortable," said Kenny's father.) New refrigerator, washer/dryer, pots and pans, dishes. Deck chairs that can sit up straight for eating, or recline back for stargazing. Couches, chairs...very little of the original furniture is left. We now have a house that is really comfortable for two or three families to relax and enjoy.
In April of 2009 we added one of the most exciting features of all, and it's a feature you won't see in the house at all:
20% of your rental fee will be given to causes that help the poor help themselves by starting businesses, raising animals, and building homes.
(No, we didn't raise the rent. We just started giving some of it away!)
And what will you see if you leave the house?
Wintergreen is, first and foremost, a skiing and snowboarding resort. They have two high-speed, six-passenger chairlifts, an automated snowmaking system and state-of-the-art grooming fleet. There is a wide variety of terrain, ranging from gentle "green" to adventurous "double-black diamond" slopes. There are also two tubing parks, one for adults and one for kids.
But there's more to Wintergreen than skiing! The award-winning golf courses, tennis courts, spa, horseback riding, and restaurants attract people year-round.
And our membership in the WPI (Wintergreen Partners, Inc) extends a variety of privileges to all guests who stay in our house, including:
* 20% discount on lift tickets, snowsports equipment rentals, and tubing
* 15% discount on golf green fees, tennis court fees, aquatics/fitness center access fee, "Out of Bounds" recreation center, "Tree House" activities, and Lake Monocan Rentals
* Access to Wintergreen outdoor pools (Blackrock, Chestnut Springs, Rodes Farm, and Stoney Creek) and to Lake Monocan Park

Our favorite attraction, to be honest, is the woods and the stream. The house is only two doors down from the Old Appalachian Trail. We have gone on short day-hikes through the woods, and longer multi-day hikes from the house to the (real) Appalachian Trail. The fall colors on Wintergreen Mountain are like nothing we have ever seen anywhere else.

- Mountain View: This is *not* one of those views where you're looking over the side of the mountain at a valley below. Rather, it is a view into the mountain woods and stream behind the house. Maybe more "beautiful" than "awe-inspiring."

- Telephone: The two telephones (in the living room and downstairs master) will make local calls only.

This pictures shows our family in October, 2007. Mary had just turned 14, Benjamin was 11, Jack 9, and Shannon 5. It seems like a long time ago, but the kids are still easily recognizable. We live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Joyce was a high school teacher before Mary was born, and Kenny is still a high school teacher.

The Unique Benefits of this House
We all love to go skiing (Kenny, Joyce, Jack, Shannon) and snowboarding (Mary, Ben), but we only do it once a year. Mostly we go up to Wintergreen during the summer and fall. The kids love the "Out of Bounds Adventure Park," but we spend a lot of time hiking through the woods or climbing on the rocks at Raven's Roost.
