To experience the historic colonial town of San Miguel from the serenity and beauty of Mariposa Villa is a traveler's dream. Spacious and artistically decorated rooms overlook the roof tops of this romantic city and the Bajio mountains. A gourmet chef and caring staff are dedicated to making your visit a nonpareil one. Ideally situated within walking distance or a 5 minute taxi ride to the central plaza. I can't wait to return!

Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This property provided a relaxed and comfortable "home" in San Miguel from which to explore the historic city. The walk each morning down the quaint cobblestone streets to the city center was the perfect way to start the day. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful. It was a delight to experience the colorful decor in each room of the Villa and to relax in the tranquil patios. The owner and manager provided an extensive list of recommended restaurants and activities but every tasty meal at the Villa was prepared and served beautifully. A highlight of our visit was a cooking lesson and demonstration presented by the chef and house manager right in the Villa's kitchen. I would highly recommend this clean and charming property for a group of friends or an extended family of adults.

This house was amazing!! Loved all of it, especially the huge kitchen and dining room table that the entire family could sit at together. We have a huge mexican extended family, and San Miguel is only an hour from their home. We were all able to spend New Year's Eve together. All of the bedrooms are comfortable and amazing and the kids loved the heated pool and were in there all day long. We drove into San Miguel to shop a few times and love the whole area. Highly recommend this house and the staff!!

We were three winter-weary adults who rented Villa Mariposa for two weeks in Feb 2012. Since we only needed 2 of 7 bedrooms, the rent was reduced. However, we had FULL access to all living areas, the heated pool, several sun terraces, and, of course, to the pleasant and competent staff. They include a housekeeper/laundress, a quietly unobtrusive gardener, and a cheerful talented cook who speaks good English and prepares fresh fruit & whatever-you-want breakfasts. She also makes delicious—and authentic—Mexican dinners on request. Leading and directing this staff is Alex, the congenial, enthusiastic, always-ready-to-help house manager (having once lived in the U.S., he speaks perfect English.) Alex kept our margarita glasses full, suggested places to go, made reservations, arranged a dinner party at the house, helped get us tickets to a "sold-out" talk at a Writer's Conference, drove us out of town for a ceramics shopping/sightseeing expedition, and took some excellent photos & video of our hot-air balloon ride (he moonlights in town as a professional photographer.) Re the home's location: it is, indeed, "above it all"—and perches on an overlook 150 feet higher than Centro's 6,500-foot elevation. Our group included a spry 85-year-old grandmother who, wearing comfortable shoes, easily made the 15-minute walk down the hill to town. For the uphill return, a $2 taxi works best. For rides down to Centro, a phone call brings a taxi in under 10 minutes. So—you might ask—why not rent in town and avoid cabs? Two answers to that question: 1) On many of the warm, sunny San Miguel days you may prefer to grab a good book and relax by the pool. 2) For the price, you probably won't find this home's comforts, amenities, staff, and views in a Centro rental. We saved hundreds of $$ by renting "on the hill"—and that buys a lot of $2 cabs. • IS LISTING ACCURATE? The text is correct. The photos show the house as it is—and the stunning views as they'll always be. • IS IT CLEAN & WELL MAINTAINED? Unquestionably clean. Daily upkeep. • OWNER RESPONSIVENESS? If you need something—just ask Alex—it gets done. • RECOMMENDATION: Definitely. And with a large group you can make your own fun up on 'Heaven's Hill.' • THINGS TO DO: To see very good art, visit galleries in town and take a cab to Aurora. Enjoy sunset cocktails on rooftop of new glam spot, the Hotel Rosewood. Take the Sunday charity tour of some amazing private homes. And try the balloon ride—our 85-year-old did, and loved it.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We had a wonderful time at Villa Mariposa. There was plenty of room and privacy for grandma, the parents and the adult children couples. Alex and the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to meet our needs. We really enjoyed the layout of VM that gave everyone privacy as well as great communal gathering places. Because of the perfect weather everyone spent a lot of time in the pool and just hanging out. Due to the holidays and the nature of the vacation we were all happy to be at the house but I do think there is somewhat of a challenge to just "go to town" given the cobblestone roads and steep hills so we probably did not get into the center as much as we might have. However, I think this is more of an issue with first time short stays and would not be an issue if you were actually living there or frequented more often and taxis are cheap and always available. We did take a great day trip into Dolores Hidalgo and our driver was very accomodating as I searched for the perfect "cazuela" . The food was delicious both the every morning breakfast and the evening meals. I think we only ate out 2 nights. Alex and Chiyo catered to our wants and one night we learned how to make Mole. I understood why Chiyo only had a blender when I went to the Tuesday Market and saw tables of blenders and spare parts and am thrilled to learn she now has her own food processor. We got to talking to a large family at a cafe in the Jardine who were staying in hotel rooms and were (appropriately) very jealous of our set up in terms of cost, space and the wonderful service of Alex who went out of his way to make us happy. You have a lovely home with interesting decor and I will recommend it to all my friends.

We stayed here in June as part of a family celebration--it was the perfect spot! Our entire (large) family was very comfortable. We had the flexibility to have our own private space, yet it was easy to visit with each other when we wanted. We have two young children (9 & 12 years old) and we loved being in SMA--we went horseback riding, ATV riding, visited the fascinating botanical gardens, took an art class, toured the town, and, of course, shopped! The staff members at Villa Mariposa were outstanding--excellent food, the home was kept clean, and all requests were addressed promptly. We'd return in a heartbeat... Julie Hamlin Washington, DC

Villa Mariposa is a beautiful home in an enchanting location. The cook, concierge and other service staff were excellent, friendly, and efficient, making our stay have the advantages of an elegant boutique hotel, but at a far lower cost. The grounds are lovely and meticulously maintained, and the heated pool is a welcome afternoon activity.San Miguel de Allende is a delight to explore – there is so much to see and do! However, the highlight of our stay was the Sazon Cooking School, just a short walk from Villa Mariposa. We took the Market Tour and Class, and highly recommend it. After being taken to what our instructor Chef Paco considered to be the best of the produce and cheese stands in the local market, we returned to class where he taught us how to turn our fresh ingredients into three different kinds of salsas. Some other dishes were added, and we all had a wonderful lunch. The school has classes almost every weekday: there are series focusing on the various regional cuisines, local and seasonal ingredients, and entertaining. It also has one of the most beautiful china, glassware and accessories shops I have ever seen.

What a trip! Wonderful seeing everyone. Having the strong sense of family means so much. Thank you, thank you. So many memorable moments! Dancing with the birthday celebration mariachi band, the romantic and otherworldly Grato, and the celebrations in town (fireworks and dancers), made the vacation an escape to a new beautiful state of mind. The cooks and crew at the Mariposa were incredibly welcoming and made Becky and I feel at home. Often when you are at leisure and the people around you are working, their efforts are made apparent. Alex, Chayo, and the others were just another bright light which helped illuminate our joyous San Miguel experience. Another highlight of the trip was renting the ATV. Becky and I had a blast zipping along and exploring the charming little corners of San Miguel along with the elaborate and special landmarks. . A world of thanks for the invigorating and meaningful experience. Love, Cole
