Key Colony Beach house description
The Sand Dollar is a beautiful, four bedroom/three bath (2 master suites) waterfront house with a large pool and all the amenities and comforts of home. It is located at 230 14th Street in the newer Coury subdivision, a quiet and exclusive neighborhood of Key Colony Beach (KCB). Located near Marathon, at mile marker 53.5 in the Middle Florida Keys.
The main floor (second level) has one master suite (bedroom and bath) with a queen bed; a second bedroom with a king bed and easy chair; and a third bedroom with twin beds. The living, dining, and kitchen (great room) area has a cathedral ceiling and double French doors opening onto the porch with a wrap-around balcony and wonderful view of the canal.
Being directly off of Vaca Cut, there is always some fish action. If you are lucky, you may even spot a manatee or dolphin in the canal!
Upstairs (third level) is a private, second, master suite with king bed, bath, and a balcony - including views of Vaca Cut, the ocean, and gorgeous Keys sunsets! The third level also features a loft area with desk and phone should you bring a laptop or any business work; wireless access to the Internet is provided via Broadband cable. The Sand Dollar has 4 TVs with cable, a DVD, and stereo radio/CD/iPod/iPhone player.
The home features a lovely, fenced 32 foot pool overlooking the canal. Pool heat is available at an extra charge. There is a 30-foot, wooden, pier dock with electricity, water hose, and a shower. From the 14th Street canal, there is immediate access to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf via Vaca Cut.
The City of Key Colony Beach offers 3 restaurants (Key Colony Inn, Sparky's Landing, and Cabana Breezes), Leigh Ann's Coffee House, Keybana clothing store, a liquor store, charter boats, gas dock, rental boats, dive shop, 3-Par golf course, tennis courts, Sunset Park (at 12th St.), and bike paths. KCB is a city with its own police department that patrols by car and boat to provide safety for residents and visitors.
Marathon Airport is 3 miles away and rental cars are available at the terminal. KCB is approximately one hour from Key West (also has an airport) and two hours from Miami. The Keys Shuttle Service operates daily from Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and Key West airports; taxi service is also available.

Our stay was very enjoyable and was a great location for boating. The house was very clean; there were some ants but bait was out for them (and it is FL) and the mattresses need updating; however, everything else was perfect and the pool was beautiful. I would recommend a ladder from the dock into the canal for safety. I would consider staying here again! Thank you

Wonderful Location and Relaxing Atmosphere
Wonderful Location and Relaxing Atmosphere
Optimal location for boaters/fishermen. Access to fuel, bait and tackle; as well as, both the Atlantic and Gulf within a few hundred yards. The pool and balconies are wonderful places to relax and enjoy the sun (note: it is worth getting the pool heated in the fall/winter months!). The eight of us were more than comfortable in the house, which has a wonderful master suit and three other nice sized bedrooms.

Beautiful house, bad customer service
Beautiful house, bad customer service
We very anxiously awaiting our arrival at this beautiful house. We arrived to this gorgeous home to find ants walking freely about all over the countertops, a freezer with a non-working ice maker, mattresses that needed updating/turning, and a dirty pool with iguana poop all around the outside and in the pool. As native floridians and yearly summer-in-key colony beach residents, we were not completely shocked by our "visitors," albeit unfortunate considering we were told the owner's husband had personally been there and it was clean and in perfect working order just days earlier. No, the shock and awe came from the very defensive, rude attitude of the owner when politely confronted with the issues, asking if there was anything that could be done. She was very unwilling to assist us and simply said "You'll just have to buy bag ice, and use the ant spray killer" Well, considering we came for fishing, diving, lobstering and generally for being on our boat all day with 4 adults and 4 kids, we were taken aback, but comforted by the fact we were told we would be reimbursed (which we weren't). In fact, my husband went to Home Depot and bought a new refrigerator and set it up outside so we would not torture the next guests with bait and fish aromas, due to the fact there is no bait freezer (which I actually am glad happened due the fact it is now my refreshment fridge/freezer in the lounge in my barn!). During our stay and upon departure we were very sure to follow procedure protocols to the tee (due to our already strained relationship, we had anticipated reciprocity). And just as we expected, we were told the "cleaning lady" showed up at her time (which was "exactly at 10, you must be out by 10, because she will be there"), and found the door wide open ( a lie), and that in the 5 minutes we had been gone, we had wasted a whole New York City's annual wattage use somehow, and we may not be getting back our deposit (which we finally did receive). Renter Beware!

Owner response: Most of our renters are wonderful people and treat our Key Colony Beach home like their own. It is especially nice to see renters return from time to time. Unfortunately, once in a great while we do end up with problem renters. These folks definitely were a problem, and their visit resulted in a fair amount of damage. They complained that there were ants on the kitchen counter. When the home had been cleaned from the previous week’s renters, no ants were observed. I mentioned this to them and stated that in South Florida, despite routine preventative spraying, ants will take advantage if messy food is left out on the counters. Since there were no ants seen by the cleaning lady after their departure, it appears that this was the situation. These renters also complained that the ice maker was not working. I stated that we had not been having problems and suggested re-seating the ice bin. I said I would reimburse them for ice during their stay if they continued to have a problem. After their departure, the ice bin was removed and re- seated and began working immediately. Apparently they had emptied the ice bin into their cooler and did not replace it properly. Since they caused the problem, I told them they would not be reimbursed. The non-native iguanas, initially let loose as pets, have procreated and become a problem in various areas of S. Florida. The City of KCB has been addressing the issue. When I discussed the iguana problem with this renter last summer, I was told one had pooped on the deck, but none had done so in the pool (another exaggeration in their written comments). The pool man confirmed the situation and hosed off the debris. We have not had this problem since last summer. Renters are directed to lock all windows and doors upon departure check-out. This group left the A/C on, the windows open and the door, not only unlocked, but standing open. Clearly their behavior was malicious as well as destructive, as we later found out when we discovered damages. When refunding their security deposit, I wrote them they were not welcome to return.
Gorgeous vacation rental. Pool was a real plus. Would definitely return.

Why the Owner Chose Key Colony Beach:
We started vacationing in Key Colony Beach in the late 1980s. We liked the community feeling and felt safe in letting our young son use the bike path to visit local friends or go to the park. We finally purchased a duplex in 1995, using it as a vacation rental between visits. Hoping to eventually retire to KCB, we sold the duplex and purchased the single family home on 14th street in early 2001. It is our home away from home. We truly love it.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
230 14th Street is located between vacant lots, making it a private and peaceful getaway. We are just a short ways down the canal from open water leading to the ocean or through Vaca Cut to the Bay. From our dock, it is quick and easy to kayak or paddleboard out to the ocean to enjoy the variety of Keys marine fish and birds. 14th Street is located in the newer Coury subdivision with exclusive homes. It is walking distance to Sunset Park, City Hall, and the Post Office. The City of Key Colony Beach offers 3 restaurants (Key Colony Inn, Sparky's Landing, and Cabana Breezes), Leigh Ann's Coffee House, liquor store, Keybana clothing store, charter boats, gas dock, rental boats, dive shop, 3-Par golf course, and tennis courts.
