Pleasant but needs attention to details

Guest: Hugh R.
Date of Stay: 12/17/11 Review Submitted: 12/20/11

The place is a real, wooden cabin and quite charming inside. Our stay was generally very pleasant, and the surrounding area is pretty and peaceful. A few quirks that we hope the cabin owner will correct for future guests: (1) Aside from the bathroom there were no curtains on any of the windows which we found quite odd. (2) The cabin permits pets, which is nice. However, we noticed that the carpets had pet hair on them that should have been vacuumed prior to our arrival.

WE LOVED OUR STAY!!!!

Date of Stay: 11/25/11 Review Submitted: 11/29/11

My husband, two children (ages 8 & 11) as well as our two dogs (one old mutt, one Bugg pup) had the pleasure of relaxing at this beautiful cabin in the woods over the weekend after Thanksgiving. We lucked out and had perfect weather! The setting is peaceful and quiet, except for the sounds of the running brook nearby-which my kids loved playing by and my dogs happily sat in. Perfectly relaxing sounds! The deck off the cabin which you can't see from the photos was my favorite place to hang out; a swing, chimenia, grill, table with chairs, overlooking the woods and brook. Inside the house was warm and extremely comfortable...the beds amazingly supportive! My daughter took over the loft area which was filled with great old movies...oh, and yes there is a TV and DVD player there! :) The kitchen was perfect, everything we needed was there and placed in such thought out areas for safety and space saving! Bonnie and Jim, the owners, greeted us with smiles and helped us plan our weekend visit-even made some calls for us to inquire about availability. We went horseback riding at a local farm, Royal Horseshoe Farm, and ate locally-Cafe Indigo! We had a wonderful experience in the woods! If you walk from the cabin, up the driveway, and turn right at the street, you end up walking near a gorgeous state protected farm "reserve" surrounded by mountains. If you need a weekend away with your kids and want to bring your dogs (there is a dog run too for your dogs in case you want to let them run free!), this is THE PLACE to go! We loved it and would return. Bonnie and Jim-thank you so much for your hospitality and for such an amazing weekend! You sure know how to live! What a wonderful place you have!!!

Owner response:We are completely convinced that our CabinAtTheMill is magic because it only appeals to the very best people on this planet. This family was the American dream with a boy, a girl, an old dog and a young dog, and a Mom & Dad who love life. Please send me more of these kinds of people. Thank you and hope you come back soon. The most perfect cabin in the woods!!!!

My fiance and myself stayed at this very charming cabin in November 2011. The pictures do not give it justice!! This cabin would be perfect for a small family, couple, or group of friends. It had a queen size bed in one room with beautiful views of the foliage. The other room had built in bunk beds. There is a living room in the main area with two couches and a cafe table. Just above the bedrooms is the most adorable loft with tons of books and movies to keep you entertained. The kitchen was perfect to make small meals, lunch and/or breakfast. There is a tri-level deck area with a grill, outdoor fireplace, and a table with six chairs. There is also a swing and hammock, which we enjoyed very much while watching the sun set. The grounds are just beautiful with a stream that runs through the entire property. Our puppy loved the space to run around in and happily splashed through the stream every chance she got. The owners were also wonderful and very accommodating. The cabin is very close to the award winning restaurant at The Inn at Little Washington. We have already made plans to rent the cabin again very soon!!!

Owner response:What a great couple these two lovely people made. I think it would be outstanding if they would consider having their wedding out here because we would love to have them come back soon. Bonny Paulson, Owner

Charming mountain cabin

Date of Stay: 10/28/11 Review Submitted: 10/30/11

My husband, two year old daughter, our two dogs, and myself stayed this past weekend at CabinAtTheMill. It was a wonderful weekend. The cabin is so centrally located to hiking, wineries, Sperryville, and Washington that there was lots to do. It was very homey and comfortable. We left feeling refreshed and hope to return in the spring.

Owner response:I believe we have a very special and unique property and I love active people coming out and discovering us, like Jenna and her young family. We definitely look forward to their return for many years to come. Thank You. Bonny Paulson, Owner

Best retreat in Virginia.

Guest: George B.
Date of Stay: 10/20/11 Review Submitted: 01/15/12

Our four night stay at the Cabin At The Mill was more than expected. The serene surroundings were the perfect setting for an early morning start to our busy days. During the day, we were in and out and the location was perfect for visiting wineries, running various errands for our daughter's wedding, and exploring new interesting night life. The cabin had everything we needed, and enough space to serve our family. We had plenty of linens, towels, kitchen gadgets, and reading material to make all of us feel right at home. We found ourselves too busy to do the things we planned at the cabin, but we did wonder up and down the babbling stream, and relax in the hammock. I wish we had the time for a fire in the chiminea during the cool evenings. Bonny visited us when we arrived and made the stay extremely wonderful. Flying in from Texas, Bonny made it possible for us to ship ahead a package that was waiting for us in the cabin when we arrived. She and Jim are the best and we wish we had the time to just sit down and visit with them. Thanks for the opportunity to stay at you precious cabin. It reminded us of our log cabin up in the mountains of Pennsylvania. I look forward to another visit to Virginia and we will make sure that we stay at the Cabin At The Mill.

Owner response:Always very nice to see that our efforts at customer satisfaction are appreciated. We want to make your CABIN AT THE MILL experience the best possible, at the fairest price; moreover, we look forward each and every time to the opportunity for meeting new friends. As a destination experience, we welcome those with "special occasion" needs, or simply the need to get away for awhile at a special magical place.

Fall Getaway

Guest: David S.
Date of Stay: 10/18/11 Review Submitted: 11/04/11

The cabin was charming and the surroundings beautifully rustic. A great quiet get away with no TV or internet. The owners said they will be equiping the cabin with Wifi. Lights to read by at night anywhere in the cabin were limited. There is no oven in the small kitchen which was no problem for us. Dining out is to be expected. The cabin was clean and the owners more than pleasant. The sound of the mountain stream nearby was delightful. Best for a couple or a family with up to two small chidren. The second bedroom bunk bed is short. There are wineries all around and the Wasmund Single Malt Whiskey distillery tour in Sperryville was interesting and highly recommended. A good example of an entrepeneur with an Idea and the creation of a small business. The owner provides an informative and entertaining tour.

Owner response:David you are absolutely right, we do not advertise having an oven or TV or Internet.

Magical, serene cabin was JUST the thing we needed!

Guest: Amanda (DC Metro Area)
Date of Stay: 10/08/11 Review Submitted: 10/13/11

My husband and I (and our puppy) were looking for a quiet getaway from the noise of DC, and Cabin at the Mill proved to be heaven on earth for us. Jim and Bonny were very welcoming, and the cabin is adorable and well-kept/stocked, the property is lovely, and quite honestly everything about it was perfect. We had a wonderful time just relaxing, making smores over the fire, checking out local wineries, and enjoying Skyline Drive. We left feeling rested and with a list of things to do the next time we come out - and there most DEFINITELY will be a next time. Many, many thanks to the Paulsons!

Owner response:We are so pleased that Amanda and Jason caught the magic that is CabinAtTheMill. Very nice, pleasant people and we welcome them back, the sooner, the better. Bonny Paulson, Owner

Date of Stay: 08/12/11 Review Submitted: 08/21/11

Bonny & Jim - Thank you so much for affording me the opportunity to stay in such a lovely cabin, to experience the beautiful area of Virginia, and for your hospitality!

Owner response:We love our 11 acre environment, with all the wildlife and natural things here to share, and we truly look forward to our guests who visit and spend time, that love life and want to be a part of Mother Natures own handy work. Dori was certainly and definitely one of those special people with a zest for life and beauty. She and her little boy pug, Oliver, came up alone and left being our friends. We most certainly look forward to Dori and Oliver coming back, to the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the very near future and relax from the Washington DC intensity. We love neat people like Dori. See You Soon! We'll leave a light on for you. Bonny Paulson, Owner 540-635-1407

Serene

My husband and I just got back from our weekend at the Cabin at the Mill. What a lovely place! If you're looking for a place to get away from it all, this is it. We couldn't believe how quiet it was out there. So much to do or so little to do, it's up to you. The cabin was clean and comfie. We spent one day out and about, exploring the area and then spent the next day in, just being lazy. We went out to Griffin Tavern to eat one night; definitely recommend it. We also drove out to see Montpelier, the home of James and Dolly Madison. That was a good day trip. We stopped along the way at a few roadside stands and even bought a beautiful quilt while there. The cabin was recommended to me by a friend who visits the cabin often and I will certainly be recommending it to my friends as well. We hope to return in the late Spring or early summer.

This is a great place to stay. I was skeptical about the "upscale" description, but it is very nicely furnished. On a beautiful piece of land, beautiful country roads to walk on. A great place for a couple or a family with 2 kids.

Owner response:We really enjoy the Kahn family and look forward to their return, which we hope to be soon. We ONLY attract special people to our magic property the these people fit that category. Thanks.

A very relaxing, adorable place

Guest: Angel (Cobbs Creek, VA)

It turned out to be just like the pictures show. It was very relaxing, beautiful, peaceful and not too far away from attractions and or grocery stores for getting food to grill out. The only thing that i feel was missing was a toaster, for having toast with Breakfast on the deck or in bed. It was wonderful and we will be back for sure. Thanks to Carol and Mike for making our stay a great one and to the owners for having such a wonderful peace of heaven.

My experience

Guest: Winsome M. (Washington, DC)
Date of Stay: 11/27/09 Review Submitted: 06/09/10

I've stayed a number of times at the Cabin and loved every visit. The Cabin is made of authentic log structure, sits overlooking a beautiful gurgling stream and is nestled in a park-like del of forested land. All amenities are first class, plenty to see and do in the surrounding communities, and both domestic (horses and cattle) and wildlife in abundance. A wonderful get-away yet so close to the Capital.

Perfect Escape to Relax and Rejuvenate

Guest: Vivian and Max (Washington, DC)
Date of Stay: 06/05/09 Review Submitted: 06/13/10

We recently spent several nights at the Cabin at the Mill and loved it. The setting is so peaceful, beautiful and quiet. There is a beauiful river that wraps around the property and a great deck for enjoying the sunsets we took in. Staying a cabin was somewhat unique experience for us and only added to the "get away from it all" feeling. Very comfy, clean and pleasing. We ended up taking in the unique restarurants in the nearby small towns and enjoyed the little shops. It was a great weekend and we will be returning! So great to have something so close by!

We had a great time at Cabin at the Mill! So peaceful and relaxing. The only problem is that our time went too fast and days seemed too short. We took our two small dogs and found this particular cabin just the place to get away from phones, computers, and the regular noise of daily life. Our hosts were most accommodating with every small detail thought of our comfort before we arrived. In fact our biggest complaint was that the pepper mill ran low! This is no roughing it, friends! The cabin is lovely. We love to cook so we enjoyed the grill and preparing our own dinners. You have the beautiful scenery for walks and enjoyment of wildlife. Plus we liked being so close to make day trips to a shopping outlet in Leesburg or Washington DC. We hit the jackpot at nearby antique shops and took a U-Haul of goodies home. We went in the summer - but would love to come back in the winter or fall. This is one vacation home that did not disappoint in any way. We'll see you again!

We were so happy to find this magical retreat from the hussle and bussle of Washington, D.C. so close to us and nearby to excellent eating establishments. The cabin itself is perfect for those of us who like to eat out and in. The facilities are all we needed and the bed is extremely comfortable. We were also encouraged to bring our Yorkie who found her special treats waiting for her. The cabin is ideal and the sound of the creek passing by lulled us to sleep each night. Highly recommended.

We discovered this wonderful little cabin on the VRBO internet site. We liked what we saw and decided to take a chance for a get-away weekend. We didn't regret it at all! In fact we had a wonderful time. We enjoyed everything about the Cabin at the Mill, both inside and out. Even our little dog, Sam, had a good time. We would never hesitate to recommend the cabin to anyone and to return there ourselves. The Paulson's thought of everything and they make you feel right at home. Thanks again!

My dogs & I thoroughly enjoyed our too-brief stay in this wonderfully comfortable, well-appointed cabin. (The Queen bed was the most comfy I've ever slept in !!) I loved my early morning coffee on the porch swing, and the dogs relished their late afternoon swim in the crystal clear stream running thru the property. Thankfully the dogs had no run-ins with local black bears, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching deer leisurely grazing on the hill above the cabin every evening. I spent an afternoon sampling unique vintages at two nearby wineries, both just a few miles north of The Cabin. I capped that day off with a fabulous guided trail ride at a local ranch. The scenery was breathtaking and as spectacular as sunset rides I enjoyed many years ago in the Continental Divide of Colorado. The Paulsons are amazing, incredibly-considerate hosts, and caretakers of a Most Magical Place. Someday I hope to return.........

What a true definition of peace & tranquility from the sounds of the stream, to the sheer relaxation while inside the cabin or just taking a nap on the hammock. The cabin itself is beautifully designed & decorated as they didn't miss a beat & we truly believe the pictures don't do it justice...You won't be dissapoined...We can't wait to return as this was just what the Dr. ordered...

If you are looking for a place of beauty and solitude with all the amenities of home then you should stay at Cabin at the Mill. The environment at the Cabin is one of beautiful, raw nature as well as sculpted areas for your pleasure. You hear the steady flow of the fast moving stream whether in the cabin or lying out in the hammock. I enjoyed every relaxing comfort of the Cabin; the front porch swing, the hammock chair hanging under the trees, the tree platform raised 6' feet above the ground and eating outside at the umbrella covered table. Inside is everything I needed for cooking my meals. The beds are very comfortable and make sleeping-in easy. I didn't watch any of the many videos available since I was into reading and resting. There are four wineries nearby for your tasting pleasure. I tasted my way through all four. I didn’t make it to the Skyline Drive, next time. So, bring your comfy clothes, books and food and enjoy a tranquil getaway in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
