Walk east a block & a half on a private lane to Russian Gulch Park and on to its beach, trails, cliff picnic grounds, hike in to the waterfall, or bike to Pt. Cabrillo without going onto Hwy. 1.

Large rooms, new furniture, linens; new, copious kitchenware & appliances; good supply of spices, condiments, napkins, food wrap, alum. foil, place-mats, serving platters, trays, wine glasses, and so on. Just bring your food. Grill outdoors on the gas and charcoal grills; outdoor dining area. Big green lawn for strolling & (challenging) croquet. Yard is fenced on 3 sides.
Sit back under the stars listening to the waves in the 6-person deep hot tub next to the deck. Hot tub seats 6, one of which is a reclining seat, and has many, many jets. Lots of outdoor seating. Teak adirondacks with a great view of waves hitting rocks. Play croquet in the very large yard. Lots of parking on private circular driveway.
Cooks enjoy Pepperwood with its 5-burner gas stove w/convection. The 5th burner is an oval burner - great for oversized pans and the griddle. And watch the Food Channel or your favorite movie on the kitchen's under-cabinet TV/DVD/CD-player. We try to keep Pepperwood stocked with lots of spices, food wrap, olive oil and vinegar, paper towels, toilet paper, and all the conveniences of home so that you don't have to pack or buy the daily necessities.

Why the Owner Chose Mendocino
We had been staying in vacation rentals for years in the Mendocino area with our wonderful aunt. We were always on the look-out for something that would offer the best combination - great yard, great view, as close to the water as possible, yet no possibility of falling off the bluff. When we found Pepperwood, we loved the location -- that we could walk back on the private lane to Russian Gulch State Park; that the bottom of the yard offered very close-in views of two different coves, the large yard is grass, with mature landscaping.
The yard was huge and yet very beautifully tended. The house itself is not the usual beach shack -- it's sturdy and offers very generous spaces. If you're caught inside by the weather, you're almost happier, with a roaring fire, huge TV over the fireplace, lots of reading material, lots of beautiful, soft couches and chairs. It seems like the best of all worlds.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We stroll to the bottom of the yard and sit on the bench to watch the waves smacking into the coves below. While we're not directly on the water, there's a large area with nothing but white water rolling in and coves. It's particularly wonderful around storm season.
As well, the yard is very large and pretty well maintained. We play croquet in the horse-shoe of lawn around the outside of the house. It's great exercise to whack away at the croquet balls.
We stroll the block-and-a-half on a private lane back to Russian Gulch State Park--frequently encountering quail, turkeys, and deer. Some of the best views on the planet on the bluffs of that park, along with picnic tables and trails. This is a huge plus to this house. There's a wonderful beach in this park that is usually empty.
This house is pretty much solid old redwood -- it's as solid as a rock, and it's not a "beach house". It's a warm, large, comfortable home, huge fireplace, yet really great views. It has really big rooms to hold extended families without feeling like you're unable to get away for a bit of down time. There is a computer area in its own room, with a picture window and counter for additional get-away space; and the kitchen has an eat-in counter looking out at the Mendocino Headlands.
You can cook dinner while watching TV (for those of us easily bored) or listening to our own CDs. You can shut the heavy swinging door between the kitchen and the extra-large frontroom for some extra privacy. Lots of nice touches.

We're in our 60's, and we've loved coming to Mendocino with our extended family. We're too busy to be able to spend alot of time at Pepperwood, but it shouldn't sit empty. It should house happy families enjoying themselves.

The entire experience, from dealing with the owners through to getting to and staying at this special place, was wonderful. My family and I were celebrating my 50th birthday, and we all loved every aspect of the home - the location, the well-equipped, spotlessly clean kitchen and bathrooms, the furnishings, and the garden and situation. We are looking forward to the next time we can go up North. As a final touch, we broke a water jug, and after we'd let the owners know, they told us that this was "normal wear and tear "and that they wouldn't deduct anything from our security deposit. Class shows! I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the classic Mendocino experience!

This house had a large, comfortable living/dining area. Very good 3 bed 3 bath. Being a little older home, the kitchen was smaller, but VERY adequate for any normal cooking needs. Great movie library. One of the best houses we were priviledged to 'borrow'.
Owner response:We love it when folks enjoy themselves at Pepperwood. The kitchen is 20' x 10' with a counter at the end looking out at the waves hitting the Mendo headlands. It has new appliances, an Oster blender, cake batter beater, large food processor, toaster oven, toaster, very good set of knives, spices, and all the conveniences for cooking and serving that most folks ever need. The floor is dark hickory. We've set it up so that folks can cook and serve lovely dinners, and enjoy the process.
