"Spectacular!" "Awesome!" "Unique." "Beautiful." "Fun." These are just a few of the words that have been used to describe the unspoiled natural setting for our vacation home, Sea Forest. Located on Cowpens, a small private island accessible by causeway, the house offers stunning views of marsh, creek and the Atlantic Ocean.
The island itself, with ten homes including ours, is situated just behind Edingsville Beach, an uninhabited barrier beach just north of Edisto Beach. The setting is secluded, relaxing, and peaceful.
Our home is designed to maximize your enjoyment of its beautiful marsh and ocean views and abundant wildlife. The main level has an open floor plan with living area, dining room, kitchen, and master suite. In the summer you may enjoy the cool ocean breezes, or if you prefer, the air conditioning. In the colder months, the fireplace adds to the cozy comfort provided by central heating.
Large picture windows across the front and front-sides of the house provide unobstructed views of the ocean, creek and marshes. The outside deck provides a perfect seating area to enjoy the afternoon sea breezes while you watch the pelicans, great blue herons, egrets, wood storks and other shore birds fly overhead or feed in the marsh grasses a few feet away.
The back screened porch provides for panoramic views of the beautiful creek, marsh and gorgeous sunsets while you enjoy the peace and quiet. The additional fireplace on the porch provides the luxury of a cozy fire to gather 'round on chilly afternoons or evenings with friends and family, even when it's raining outside!
The recently added master suite offers a large bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a deck overlooking the creek, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. There are two bedrooms upstairs. One has a double bed and a small deck overlooking the creek and marsh. The other bedroom has a double and a single bed which is wonderful for families with young children. There is also a fold-up cot for an additional guest.
A covered fixed pier with floating dock is on the creek behind the house. The dock provides additional 360-degree marsh/creek views and access to the creek for small boats (kayaks, jon boats, etc.), crabbing, fishing, and swimming, This is a wonderful swimming "hole" and great for lazy afternoons spent relaxing in and on the water. There's a hammock to enjoy the breezes while you read or nap --- the perfect way to while away the hours on vacation.
The creek is navigable for small boats even at dead low tide (about 3 feet of water at the dock at low tide), and provides easy access to Edingsville Beach, Botany Bay Beach, and Frampton Inlet. Edingsville Beach has historic significance because it was the established beach community in the 1800's for the Edisto Island plantation owners until it was completely destroyed by the hurricane of 1893.
For the serious beachcomber, pieces of fine china and old wine bottles from the old Edingsville community can still be found on this beach today. Both Edingsville and Botany Bay Beaches are literally covered with numerous seashells and fossils, including sharks' teeth, and these beaches are prime locations for swimming, walking, sunning, and surf fishing. It is requested by creek property owners that jet skis not be used on the creek.
In addition to boat access to Edingsville Beach, one can walk from our home to the beach which is a distance of about a half mile through a private residential development. For other beach access, we also use the public path options at Edisto Beach.
Sea Forest is located about five miles from Edisto Beach with its restaurants, gift shops, grocery and hardware stores, golf course, tennis courts, churches, and special community events. It is about a forty-five minute drive south of romantic Charleston, SC, known for its outstanding gourmet restaurants, chic King Street shops, and historic sites and homes.
Yes, Sea Forest really is "unique!" It's a comfortable home in an incredibly beautiful setting. There is lots to do and see, and yet it's so relaxing that you might not want to do anything at all!

My husband and I, along with my sister and her husband, rented this home for a long weekend in October. We were awe struck by the location and the house - you can see the creek, and on out to the ocean, from the wide expanse of windows across the front of the house. The Island is so private you feel like you have the whole place to yourself. Enjoyable, but a little bit of a walk to the beach. We rented a jon boat to go up and down the creek for fun and to fish. Each day, we had dolphins play around the boat while we were fishing. Wonderful dock to fish from also - or just sit out on and enjoy watching the dolphins. Has a gazebo area so you can spend the day on the dock, but have shade - not all of the houses have this amenity. The house itself is beautiful - wonderful kitchen with nice (almost new) pots/pans/dishes & utensils. The downstairs is open and has a fresh, airy feeling. The, living room and screened in back porch are very comfortably appointed. The downstairs master bedroom is big and well appointed, with a bathroom attached. However, you can close off the bedroom during the day so others can use the master bathroom without losing your bedroom privacy. The 2nd bathroom is on the 1st floor. It is a little old but nicely kept and very clean. The upstairs bedrooms need a little work on the ceilings, but the beds are fine and the rooms are clean. I would not recommend this house if you have very small children as you may not feel comfortable with them navigating the stairway to the upstairs or getting up during the night to go downstairs to use the bathroom. We kept the windows open and never needed to turn on the air conditioninng. Overall, the house is VERY clean, wonderfully decorated and well kept up, especially the kitchen and bathrooms which is how I really judge a house. We look forward to renting this house again (and again).

My family and I are (sadly!) spending our last day here at Sea Forest after having a most magnificent stay this week. We have been coming to Edisto for about thirty years and stayed in many different places. We have now found our favorite! The setting is incredible and the house is very, very comfortable, clean and well-maintained. It was a perfect place to see out the old year and welcome 2011. We were delayed a day in getting here because we were snowed in at home in Asheville. Mike very generously offered for us to stay another day to make up for the day we missed. This was totally unexpected and very much appreciated. The only negative thing about our stay is that we have to leave tomorrow! You will love it here too, I'm sure!

We had the most glorious stay at this fantastic home. The new master bedroom and bath is worth the drive alone. You can sit at the window that runs the entire length of the house and watch the marsh in all its glory or you can sit on the screened back porch with fireplace and see the dock and that part of the marsh. This place was so peaceful and quiet when we went in early spring. We so enjoyed our walks along the natural roads. There was always something new to see and each tide brought new adventures. The owner is one of the nicest around. We definitely plan to go back to enjoy and relax.

A wonderful, wonderful stay. The house is as advertised with only one surprise; the views and scenery are much more beautiful than the pictures. We HIGHLY recommend renting the john boat. Not only is it much easier than carrying all your stuff to the beach, but also, it is a truly unique and fun way to get there. The kids and the dogs loved riding in the boat to the beach. And, the beach at the inlet offered the best of all worlds: waves at high tide; shells, islands and wading depth at low tide. Not to mention is was virtually like having your personal private beach.

We were tired, mentally and physically, and we drove up about sunset to find . . . heaven on earth. Incredible house that is wonderful for either families or couples. We spent hours on the porch, greeted the sun with deer and waterfowl, shelled and fell in love with Edisto and Sea Forest. We will be back, again and again!

After months of moving, empty-nesting, and crisis-managing our aging parents, your home here welcomed us to much needed respite. It is so soothing to be surronded on two sides by the slow rhythms of the marsh tides, to sleep to the sound of breeze and surf, and to walk for hours along the beach. We too saw dolphins in the creek, giant horseshoe crabs, eagles and whooping crane. The bird life here is astonishing. We read and wrote and talked-- even caught and ate some crab. The jon boat is lots of fun. The superb watercolors and pottery in your home attest to your own love of beauty. This is a beautiful place. We are blessed and refreshed for having been here.

What a great house! Great view! We have spent four consecutive summers here. We enjoy the dock, the walk to the beach, the boating, the occasional dolphin, and the sun and surf. It is great to get away with your family to such a quiet, peaceful place. Thanks for sharing your place with us!
