This mountainous area has breath-taking vistas and opportunities, and is the ancestral home of the Cherokee Indian Nation. Keowee means "place of the mulberries". Many Scot, Irish, Welsh, and German settlers came to this area. Keowee Key is both the oldest and most popular residential community development on Lake Keowee. Amenities include the Clubhouse with restaurants/bar, a challenging, newly-renovated, 18 hole championship golf course ($19 for a complete round, including a new golf cart), a fitness and racket center, indoor and outdoor pools, beaches, full-service marina, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and very affordable, well-equipped, pontoon boat rentals. Lake Keowee is especially beautiful from the water, with waterfalls and the "Blue Wall" across the northern horizon. The popular 2-5/8 mile lighted and paved lakeside trail within Keowee Key meanders around the large cove at the North Marina. Clemson, Walhalla, Seneca, Six Mile, and Central are nearby (10 miles), and Greenville (Upstate SC's largest metro) is just 45 minutes away.
A 1+ hour drive will take you to Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) Airport, Tryon, Hendersonville, Asheville, the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, and to Cherokee- which features a Harrah's casino, "Unto These Hills" outdoor theatre production, and Oconoluftee Indian Village. Maggie Valley, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Cade's Cove, Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Whitewater Rivers (Chattooga, Nantahala, French Broad, Ocoee, etc.), Biltmore House, Foothills Trail, Bartram Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, DuPont Forest, Cherokee Scenic Foothills Highway (SC 11),Chimney Rock Park, Lake Lure, Highlands, Cashiers, and the NC and SC Botanical Gardens are all within your reach, as are 4 SC mountain parks (Oconee, Table Rock, Devil's Fork and Caesar's Head). Over 30 South Carolina waterfalls are accessible in the surrounding mountains and foothills, including Lower Whitewater Falls. Just upstream (in NC) is Upper Whitewater Falls, the largest east of the Mississippi. This spectacular sight is only 25 minutes by car (and an easy walk) from Keowee Key.
