This is Casa Yamulkan, an open and easy beach house that is the perfect space for friends and family seeking a sophisticated, comfortable retreat, located on beautiful Soliman Bay, a hidden beach one hour south of Cancun, Mexico on the Mayan Riviera. The rental house is conveniently located between Akumal and Tulum.
Yamulkan is approached from the road through a thicket of native trees festooned with orchid plants and bougainvillaea. A large flamboyant is a sight for sore eyes when blooming in the spring, and the native almond trees provide dappled shade from the tropical sun. The house is an ample, airy, cool, new, two storey stucco house with the living room, dining room and kitchen open all the way up to the large palapa (palm) roof.
It sits about 40 feet from the beach surrounded by native palms and coconut palms. The first floor is at ground level, so you just amble out to the large beach palapa with its lounge chairs and hammocks to admire the amazingly beautiful waters of the bay, which is protected by a reef running straight across the mouth. This means the waves are gentle, nothing children can’t handle.
That reef is teeming with lovely tropical fish, which makes the bay a snorkeler's paradise with its white sandy bottom dotted with coral heads, and a safe place for swimming, diving and kayaking. Manta rays can frequently be seen gliding sedately by, and turtles have been a recent delightful treat..
The two bedrooms and the studio (which doubles as a bedroom if need be) on the ground floor have stucco ceilings and are equipped with air conditioning. Each bedroom has a king-size bed and its own full bathroom. The studio has a large desk and TV (SKY), a bathroom and a comfy sofa, but the sofa can be switched for a futon to sleep two adults or children when required.
The ample, well-equipped, open kitchen is an extension of the dining room, whose handsome local two-tone hardwood table seats 10 persons (12 in a pinch). The dining room leads into the living room, and the entire area has a feeling of great spaciousness, as the palapa roof rises about six meters (18 feet) above them. They all look out towards the beach and the water. The décor consists mainly of original oil paintings and unusual Mexican crafts, and the bookcase contains an assortment of books in case you forget to bring reading material.
A terrace extends along the front of the house, perfect for breakfast or just lazing. Above the terrace is a very large open verandah made of local hardwood, which in turn is covered by an extension of the palapa roof. The verandah is lovely for just sitting, reading, catching 40 winks or gazing at the post-card perfect view, which often includes pelicans or frigate birds floating slowly by looking for their next meal in the gleaming, transparent water.
On the upper floor, there is a large independent, self contained room running the entire depth of the house, one side of which is all windows. It has an open-air terrace, a bathroom and a kitchenette and the furniture includes two couches that are quite comfortable for sleeping. It has an absolutely gorgeous view of the bay and the sparkling aquamarine water. This room is reached by means of an outside wooden staircase and has no air conditioning, since it is covered by the palapa roof. However, it has lovely breezes.
The other two sleeping areas upstairs are reached via the inside staircase, and share a bathroom. They are covered by the palapa roof. The larger one is furnished with two single beds and has a large window looking out onto the beautiful vegetation surrounding the house and the waters of the next bay in the distance. The smaller one has a very comfortable futon for two people and a window overlooking the garden and the expanse of mangroves extending inland.
Maximum Occupancy is 8 adults and 2 children

We recently stayed at Casa Yamulkan for a week after Christmas. The pictures on the internet do not do the house justice. The ocean is only steps away from the house, and the natural decor, from the seashell decorations and lovely thatched vaulted roof, provide a beautiful and relaxing transition from outdoors to indoors. We ate breakfast and lunch on the patio at the big table looking out onto Solimon Bay, which we likened to a giant saltwater swimming pool as it is so shallow. We swam, took the kayaks out and truly enjoyed the beautiful and serene private beach. There is a very handy outdoor shower on the patio so the sand was able to stay outside where it belongs! We love to cook so we were delighted with the very well equipped kitchen. The “San Francisco” supermarket in Tulum was only a 10-minute drive and it had everything we needed. One night we hired Jerry, the caretaker/trained chef to cook for us and feasted on a delicious and very well priced authentic Mexican meal. We also used the barbeque for a fun night with our neighbours, dining on fresh fish bought from the market. The well cared for house was always lovely and cool with just the ceiling fans on while we were there. The beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms and showers spacious with lots of hot water, and the satellite TV handy for our son the sports fan! One bathroom had grilled windows and a door so we could leave all our valuables locked up while we were away at one of our day trips. We chose just a few of the many outings, as we were there primarily to relax on the beach and we want to save some things for our next visit! We had a great afternoon snorkeling in a nearby cenote and on another day drove to Coba to see the Mayan ruins. We have seen the ruins at Tulum on a previous trip, which I would also recommend. I have rented houses through the internet before, and the customer service, information and instructions provided by Marcia at Akumal Direct were outstanding.

Just a short e-mail to tell you that once again we have had a wonderfull week in Casa Yamulkan. As always, we have had some amazing snorkling tours on the reef. And this year we had invited Mexican friends to discover the place. They have been very happy to know that such places still exist in their own country! We also enjoyed a lot the dinner offered by Nina and cooked by Jerry. Now we are looking at our trip back to France as I will end my current contract for the Mexican plant at the end of June. But also we are already planning to return to Mexico to see some friends and hopefully return to Casa Yamulkan. Once again thank you for your kindness. F.F.

Casa Yamulkan is a wonderful beach house. The location is just beautiful! The house is comfortable and well maintained by the caretaker Jerry. The Soliman bay location could have not been more perfect for our family. Snorkeling is just steps from the villa. The beach is very nice and has good water entry for swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking. We also enjoyed the shade palapas and hammocks. The caretaker Jerry is a trained chef. His meals were delicious. Having staff that can cook wonderful meals was a huge benefit. My family looks forward to returning to Casa Yamulkan for future vacations. The reservation process through Akumal Direct was easy. Casa Yamulkan is highly recommended!
