"Ocracoke" is a special place; it is my favorite getaway beach. It has some of the finest, wild beaches in the country, and the water quality is at the top of the charts, says Stephen Leatherman, Ph.D., aka Dr. Beach who has rated the nation's beaches for 15 years and has consistently placed Ocracoke Island near or at the very top of his famous top 10 list.
It is our favorite getaway as well. We first discovered this special place in 1957 when we were but teenagers and have been coming back ever since. If you want a place to unwind and to get in touch with nature, Ocracoke is for you! Located at the southernmost tip of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with the Pamlico Sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, this 'Pearl of the Outer Banks' offers something for everyone. It boasts 14 miles of pristine, undeveloped beaches and its proximity to the Gulf Stream and consequent warm waters insure unsurpassed shelling, crabbing, shellfish gathering, surf, sound and deep sea fishing and, of course, swimming and surfing.
For the naturalist, Ocracoke and nearby Portsmouth offer an abundance of wonderful experiences. Since they are located on the eastern flyway of many migrating water and land birds, they are a birdwatcher's paradise. Additionally, one can explore Ocracokes natural beauty on foot by hiking its trails, on the water by kayaking its many creeks, on a bicycle by riding through the streets and pathways of its historic and picturesque village and on Portsmouth Island even on an ATV. Dozens of boats are available for charter fishing and hunting is permitted in season. Fishing and hunting guide services are readily available.
Ocracoke is accessible from Hatteras Village by a 45-minute free ferry ride. In summer, ferries run every half hour; at other times of the year they run on the hour. Also, two ferries leave several times a day from the North Carolina mainland, one from Swan Quarter and one from Cedar Island. These are fee service, reservation only ferries and the trip takes about two and a half hours. Ocracoke also boasts an airport which accepts small planes and a beautiful, safe harbor for those who wish to come by boat.
Development on the island is restricted to the southernmost tip. Located there are the Silver Lake Harbor and Ocracoke village. This historic fishing village, now home to approximately 750 'Ocokers', was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The rest of the island is under the protection of the National Park Service. Points of interest include: The Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum which showcases Ocracokes rich heritage, the 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse, The British Cemetery, as well as many historic commercial buildings and homes.
Ocracoke was a favorite anchorage of Edward Teach, the infamous Blackbeard the Pirate, and there is even a museum dedicated to his shenanigans. Descendants of Spanish mustangs, known as Banker Ponies, though no longer free to roam, may be seen in the pony corral and there are dozens of unique shops filled with the beautiful creations of the islands many talented artists and crafts people. There are also many excellent restaurants. In short, the lucky visitor has everything one could want in a vacation destination combined with the quiet, low-key attitude of a place off the beaten track.
No movie theaters, amusement parks, miniature golf arcades intrude, so relax, slow down, and regain a sense of calm and peace of mind. Enjoy the fantastic sunsets and the star-filled skies -- if youre lucky you may even see a shooting star.
This outstanding two-story, three bedroom, two bath house offers a quiet, private retreat away from the hustle and bustle. It is protected from the road by beautiful cedar trees and boasts both screened porches and a sun deck. Bring your own linens but take advantage of all the other wonderful amenities this house has to offer.
