Dominical house description

'Shelter From the Storm' is a group of 2 houses and the owner's residence, perched on a five acre mountainside point, approximately 60 meters above the Pacific Ocean; high enough to give dramatic views (think Big Sur in California) of the coastline to the Osa Peninsula but low enough to hear the waves breaking on the rocks below. Perfect for family reunions or group vacations, Shelter from the storm consists of two luxurious villas and a charming efficiency apartment tucked into the jungle and oriented to maximize privacy while allowing for the 'outside living' so popular in this part of the world. Pricing is for Villa la Cuesta Villa las Rocas is slightly more. Although not necessary to rent all of the villas, It is cheaper to rent our entire complex than many four bedroom villas in the area.

Villa Las Rocas, designed as a two level, two bedroom, two bath with separate entrances to accommodate two to six people. The lower unit, Baja Las Rocas sleeps two in a luxurious suite with a kitchenette and private patio with an outstanding ocean view. The upper unit, Las Rocas Arriba, sleeps two in a king-size bed in the bedroom with room for another two in the queen-size murphy bed in the indoor salon.
Villa La Cuesta is a one bedroom/one bath home with Murphy-bed and will accommodate two to four people. If your group is larger, an additional luxury studio apartment (The Monkey House) is available to sleep 2 people. All residences exhibit locally handcrafted custom hardwood windows, doors, furniture, cabinetry, throughout.

Just TWO MINUTES off the beautiful paved coastal highway and less than ten minutes to Dominical to the north, or Uvita to the south, 'Shelter from the Storm' offers the peace and privacy you expect on your tropical vacation but near enough to the nightlife, abundant restaurants, shopping and recreation facilities to satisfy even the most active traveler.

We would be happy to assist in booking horseback rides along the beach or to beautiful waterfalls, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, fishing trips, zip-line rides, canopy tours, birdwatching tours, or hiking at Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge. A relaxing massage or gourmet dinner can also be booked in the privacy of your villa. Rental car pick-up at the airport can also be arranged if so desired.

All of the villas enjoy fresh ocean breezes during the day and even cooler mountain breezes every night, although all have air-conditioning and ceiling fans in every room.

All residences include kitchen facilities and all electrical appliances, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, internet access (bring your laptop,) Egyptian cotton sheets and towels, and CD players with a library of hundreds of discs available.

Why travel all over the country to search for wildlife when, from our living room we see not only monkeys (both howlers and white face) but, also sloths, coati, beautiful butterflies, and dozens of species of birds including hummingbirds, toucans, toucanet, parrots, soaring falcons and of course, pelicans.

Cast your gaze to the ocean to see passing dolphins and during migrating season (November to March) it is not unusual to see whales breaching in Coronado Bay.

We are located within ten minutes of at least five pristine beaches from the world class surf breaks of Playa Dominical to virtually deserted stretches of Playa Hermosa to the protected waters of Playa Ballena, probably the most perfect swimming beach on the Pacific coast. Or, if you prefer, enjoy relaxing around the ocean view pool lounging on our locally handcrafted teak outdoor furniture.

Take advantage of our spacious bamboo covered bar/barbeque rancho area with huge stainless steel gas grill, stereo, honor bar, refrigerator, bathroom, full dining facilities, reading library, hammocks and extensive video library and Direct TV satellite television.

This was our second trip to Costa Rica and our first to the Dominical area. After staying at SFTS hopefully it will not be the last. For 2 couples traveling together, we rented Villa Las Rocas ( 2 separate units in the same building) and could not have been happier. Each unit allowed for separate entrances, sleeping and patio, but the upper unit with full kitchen allowed us to cook and eat together and share the magnificent views. There are stairs leading to these villas;inquire about the other rentals if this is a problem. I cannot add to what has already been written ; this is a place you must go to comprehend the beauty and magic of the area. I truly fell in love with my surroundings. We were there 4 nights, I would not do any less. There is ample to see and visit; beaches, horseback ride to the falls, restaurants, watch surfers, or best of all, just "be" at SFTS. Donna and Daryl are the ultimate hosts and upon arrival we were treated like family. Donna stocked our fridge with breakfast staples, pineapple, cookies, delicious bread, jam, juice and milk. We savored it all the first morning we awoke to the sun rising and pouring in through our bedroom window. Interestingly, you will also see the sun set when you walk up to the clearing each evening! Daryl welcomed us with margaritas and popcorn after helping us unload luggage and giving us a quick overview of the villas. The rancho with honor bar and the pool area are so welcoming and the view from the pool patio so beautiful. These hosts will make tour arrangements ,offer suggestions on stores, restaurants etc. They are a wealth of info. on the area and most accommodating. So clean, so beautifully landscaped, well furnished, comfortable, safe... did I mention monkeys, sloths, hummingbirds, and toucans in full view ! You need a 4 wheel drive to get to SFTS but I suggest a 4 wheel if you plan to do any exploring in Costa Rica. My days are filled with memories of this beautiful setting.

I traveled to Costa Rica for the first time in October 2013, and stayed at Shelter from the Storm (SFTS) for 6 days towards the end of my 3-week trip. I had reservations elsewhere in the Dominical area, but a fellow traveler at a resort earlier in my trip recommended that I stay at SFTS when I got to the Pacific coast. Her recommendation of SFTS was so positive and so strong, that I almost had no choice but to check it out, and I'm SO glad I did. I was able to change my reservations to SFTS with only a couple days notice, and Donna and Daryl were so accommodating via email ahead of time. The information they provided me before I arrived (and after I arrived as well) was comprehensive, with almost unlimited day trip suggestions and contact information for everything I needed. Meeting Donna and Daryl in person was even better than advertised, if that's even possible...they are the most real people I've ever met, and the hospitality was first class in all aspects. And if Daryl offers to make you some of his "circus popcorn" don't even think of passing it up...it really is the best popcorn I've ever tasted and was a great treat. I stayed in the Monkey House, which was an incredible experience. There really is a "monkey highway" right outside the Monkey House villa, with the white-face monkeys swinging through the trees every morning and evening. The howler monkeys were also around, and I loved hearing their unique sounds, all while sitting out on the balcony enjoying the Pacific ocean air. I came to SFTS looking for some tranquility and good hiking opportunities, having done a lot of the more tourist-centric activities earlier in my trip. SFTS did not disappoint at all in either aspect, and Donna and Daryl were more than accommodating to ensure my stay was everything I wanted it to be. I could write a book about all the great attributes of SFTS and Donna and Daryl as hosts, but will end this review by just saying: "Go stay at SFTS, you will not be disappointed!" When I return to Costa Rica again, I will definitely include SFTS on my itinerary.

My partner and I spent a bit more than a week at SFTS. This is somewhere we definitely would come back to visit. Donna and Daryl and all of the pets were great! We loved spending time at the pool, exploring on day trips, sitting on the patio, and simply experiencing a simple and peaceful vacation. I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to visit SFTS. Costa Rica is most wonderful. Stayed July 2013-August 2013

For full disclosure purposes, Daryl and Donna are longtime friends of an old friend of ours. That is how we found Shelter From the Storm. Having said that, I firmly believe that all guests at the villas received the same attention, hospitality, and assistance that we were given. First, the accommodations are gorgeous. Sitting on a spit of land in the jungle above the sea, you are at home with the toucans and the capuchin monkeys. The villas each have a unique design to fit into the landscape. We stayed in the Monkey House. Climbing up the spiral staircase brings you to the balcony with its chairs and hammock. The sliding glass doors open into the living space - a comfortable bed on the left wall, and seating on the right. Straight ahead is the kitchen area with all you need for preparing and eating meals. To the left of the kitchen is the bathroom with a great shower. To be honest the only sitting we did inside was at the kitchen bar as we ate breakfast once or twice. Otherwise, when we were not out exploring the attractions, we were on the balcony or at El Rancho. More on that soon. We had expected insects to be a problem. I didn't touch the repellent in the week we were here. We kept windows and door wide open, which, along with the ceiling fans, kept us comfortable and cool. And the hammock was very comfortable in the heat of the day. El Rancho is a common room with honor bar and tables. It opens onto the pool and deck. This is where Daryl makes his famous margaritas, and you can chat with the other guests and the hosts. You occasionally get interrupted by the monkeys swinging by through the trees. You have to get up and watch them, but such is life. The location of Shelter From the Storm is terrific. Miles of beautiful beaches are minutes away. We were introduced to great restaurants. If you want to zipline through the canopy or ride horseback to a waterfall, it is all close by. Daryl and Donna will direct you. Finally, our hosts were fantastic. Donna and Daryl were friendly, hospitable, and helpful. They were happy to make reservations for dinners and for outings. Street signs are not reliable, but Daryl's directions were spot on. Most of all, they were good people. They care for the earth and land around them. They care about their guests. And we loved them as well.

My boyfriend, his son and I spent 11 days touring Shelter from the Storm. We were there during a busy time for the area, so since we couldn't find somewhere that could accomadate us for the entire time in one rental, Donna arranged it so that we could stay on their property the entire time. We had the priviledge of testing out all of their spaces (Which was quite fun). All of the accomadations had their own verandas with beautiful views and an element of feeling secluded, even with neighbors being near by. All of them also had airconditioning and didn't leave you wanting for anything, with beautiful decor and American friendly bathrooms (no need to put your tp in the trash can, like 98% of CR) Abajo was the smallest, but perfect for a couple that is probably going to eat out most of the time (as the kitchen was small). Arriba was my favorite, because the kitchen was was the best stocked and arranged for doing a lot of cooking, not to mention there was a gass stove! The layout and the veranda were also the most comfortable for me, especially with three people. To me this one was also the most beautiful, with the wood work and the view. The monkey house was really fun. We weren't lucky enough to see any monkeys (at least none that weren't living with me), however, you really felt like you were in the rain forest. This was probably the most peaceful location with all of the green and is my second favorite (especially if there are only two of you). La Cuesta was our last part of the tour and we were not disappointed. This one has the furthest distance between beds if that's important to your group, and it has the most space. The veranda wraps around two sides and has yet another beautiful view. One of the best parts about Shelter from the Storm had nothing to do with the accomodations, it was the two amazing hosts, Daryl and Donna. Not only were they the most excellent concierges, but they felt more like we were visiting the coolest Aunt and Uncle you could wish for. Comming from Colorado, my friends and I have a saying that transfers across generas..."We don't do swag!" Well, there's no swag here, it's all dank!!!

Spectacular views and a warm welcome! We had a wonderful time during our 3 day stay at "Shelter from the Storm" during our last few days in Costa Rica. Thank you Donna and Daryl for all your hospitality and great travel tips. We stayed in the Las Rocas Abajo suite which had an amazing view of the ocean. During our stay we had a fantastic time doing horseback riding to nearby Nauyaca Waterfalls (a trip which Donna booked for us ahead of time) and hiking in nearby Hacienda Baru. It was also very relaxing just hanging out by the pool/rancho lounge area or on the patio of our suite at "Shelter from the Storm". Highly recommended!!!

Shelter from the Storm was our mid-January escape from Pennsylvania winter, and it provided us with images, sounds, and experiences we'll remember forever! Upon our arrival, Donna showed us our villa, which was beautifully appointed with local art work, had a generous kitchen, and opened up to a spacious patio where we could lounge and read or dine. Donna had graciously stocked us with eggs, croissants, coffee, and pineapple so we could enjoy breakfast and relax in the morning. The highlight of our stay at the villa was definitely waking up to see the sun rise from our bedroom (I know this is the West Coast, but yes, we could see the sun rise!) and hearing the jungle come alive with birds chirping and howler monkeys swinging through. Every morning we had coffee on the patio and soaked in the priceless view of the Pacific Ocean below us. It was so relaxing and therapeutic! Besides Donna's warm welcome to our villa, Daryl made us margaritas and popcorn "on the house" as a welcome, and we sat and chatted in the Rancho with Daryl, Donna, and the other guests. Throughout the week D & D recommended beaches, restaurants, and tours and took care of any reservations needed. We had no responsibilities and no worries! All their recommendations proved to be excellent, resulting in a memorable week experiencing diverse aspects of the area, such as the hippie/surfer town of Dominical, the cave-framed beach of Ventana, a horseback ride to beautiful waterfalls, and the cosmopolitan restaurants of Ojochal. Our villa was extremely clean and maintained several times by the housekeeper Blanca. Throughout our stay we felt that we and our belongings were safe. We came home saying that we'd love to return to live among the natural beauty of Costa Rica once again, and we would definitely want to return to Shelter From the Storm. We highly recommend this lovely escape where we were greeted like family and treated royally.

We spent a week in January 2013 in Las Rocas Arriba at Shelter From the Storm. The villa was better than and of the best hotels we've ever stayed at. We spent holiday week in December at Sofitel in London. That was a definate 5 stars - yet Shelter From the Storm beats any hotel you could ever find! You have luxury accomodations, from comfortable beds, great linens, all the towels you would need. You also have modern conveniences - if you want to prepare some local food - you have the facilities at your fingertips to do so. Having a refrigerator and kitchenette are amazing perks - that you don't get at even the best hotels.. The Rancho - which had the swimming pool - the bar - wi fi - and satellite TV was a fun place to hang during the evening - or when taking a break during the day. We saw a wide array of wildlife on the property. From toucans going from tree to tree while sitting at the pool, to an amazing number of monkeys. We heard the howlers in the distance, before they paraded by. We had about 20 whiteface go from tree to tree to tree. We were lazy and just sat for an hour watching them in nearby trees. The area around SFTS offers fun activities, from white water rafting (great), horseback rides to the falls, and great beaches. We visited a local rain forest - and halfway through our hike over suspension bridges and up the mountain - we reached the crest over the rivers - and wouldn't you know - it starts pouring. Like a Disney ride where they turned on the water for you (yet we cold see the sun only a few km away). Our hike down was in pouring rain - which we loved. Then we drove back to SFTS in bright sunshine. We never had a worry about security - while at SFTS or in the local area. We always felt quite safe, both our property - and ourselves. We did always keep the SUV locked while in any part of Costa Rica. The property gives you a secure feeling. The hosts Daryl y Donna were great. Daryl would make circus style popcorn nightly - with locally hand pressed coconut oil. Wow what a treat! And they offer a wealth of local information and knowledge. The honor bar was well stocked. Most hotels try to hit you with extras, especially drinks (sodas or alcoholic) that can really add to the bill. The honor bars prices were so reasonable at SFTS. We can't wait for the next opportunity to visit Shelter From the Storm again. All the villas looked great at SFTS - so it really doesn't mattter which you choose (though some

Our family group of 9 people stayed at SFTS over the winter holidays and had a fabulous time. The setting is exquisite, in the middle of the jungle and overlooking the ocean. The site is immaculate, with everything in perfect condition or very close to it. Our hosts Daryl and Donna went out of their way to assist with any logistical challenges, such as finding an open restaurant on New Years Day. We hope to return some day!

I will admit I had no idea what to expect when my flight landed in San Jose but boy was i amazed when i Got to Shelter From The Storm. No words can truly describe just how beautiful this place is. Seemingly every little detail has been thought of to make your stay as relaxing, memorable, and enjoyable as it can possible be. I was amazed by how much character the room had. I stayed in Las Rocas Arriba and it was flawless. A beautiful and very large porch to eat, drink, and relax on. Fully equipped with a huge shade that you can put up or down however you choose (we kept it up during the day to let the ocean breeze come in and down at night as it may rain.) The wood work throughout was beautiful and you simply cannot beat sleeping to the sound of the waves just down the mountain. Best of all was waking up every morning and looking to the left out the patio doors to the most beautiful sight of the pacific and mountains. Wifi was available everywhere on the property which was nice to check your emails and such. Costa rica is an amazing place and SFTS is in a perfect location with everything and anything you could want or need close by. Don Lulo's horseback trip to the falls is a must and zip lining at osa mountain was great as well. All of which Donna and Daryl will arrange for you, all you have to do is say the word. Costa Rica has many amazing people and Donna and Daryl are no exception. I have been a lot of places in my life and nothing compares to the week I spent at Shelter From The Storm. I cannot wait to go back!!

                          Year Purchased: 1993

About the owner: Although Shelter From The Storm was originally intended to be a winter retreat from our life in the States, a fire in 1999 that destroyed our motor home (along with everything we owned in the States) prompted us to decide to stay here and retire early, albeit with insufficient resources. At the same time, the Costa Rican government decided to open the southern zone to tourism by paving the coast road and bringing in electricity to our remote corner of the world. Things started to change quickly. Our “retirement” came to an abrupt end with the bursting of the 'tech bubble' and the precipitous drop in our retirement funds along with a government raid on our 'off shore investment house' (think Bernie Madoff) left us with the need to 'go to plan B.' With most of our retirement money gone and our only significant asset being four mountainside acres with the most incredible views in the world, it was decided that we had to develop our property and share our good fortune with the world. Knowing nothing about the 'hospitality business' we just tried to think of what we would want in the perfect vacation and decided to provide everything based on that. As it turns out, three years later, we did everything right! We have filled our days with productive activity, pleased hundreds of people and live a life that anyone would love.

                          Why the Owner Chose Dominical:
Donna and I (Daryl) bought our property in the winter of 1993 while on off season leave from our jobs with the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus (more about that when we meet.) we found ourselves at 'the end of the earth' with no roads, no electricity, one phone in the village and the most amazing ocean views we had ever seen, we decided right then to buy a piece of this paradise as our escape from the madness of the developed world and to retreat from the seemingly capricious changes rapidly overtaking society. It didn't work. It seems that an area of such breathtaking beauty and remarkable biodiversity is not allowed to remain a secret forever.Although not originally purchased to build a 'rental,' Shelter From the Storm has always been a a refuge from the madness. From our first visit to the property wearing boots and cutting our way in with machetes, we were filled with such an inner peace that there was left no doubt that we had found 'nirvana.' The gentle roar of the the waves breaking on the rocks below and the chatter of the capuchin monkeys passing overhead told us that our traveling days were over.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
When staying at Shelter From the Storm, you will enjoy the benefit of our presence; unobtrusive but available. If there is something that you find that you need we are there to provide it. If there is something that doesn't work just right, we are there to make it right. If you would like to know where to eat, what tours to take (and which ones NOT to take) where to get groceries, medicines, dental care or have your rental car towed out of a mud bog, we are there. We are housekeeping, concierge, maintenance, room service and tour guide. We have combined the privacy and luxury of private residences with the services of the finest hotels in the world. Like 'W' Hotels, we have adopted the motto, 'Whatever you want; whenever you want it.'
