Stonington house description

This property is a vacationer’s dream. The property consists of a private 11 acre point with nearly 3000 feet of deep-water frontage, two large sand beaches, several pocket beaches, granite ledges, trails through the woods and picture perfect views across Penobscot Bay to the Camden Hills. There are also daily morning and evening flyovers by the neighborhood bald eagle on his way to and from his fishing trips to adjacent Burnt Cove. The house, a sturdy cape with water views from every window, is located approximately 50 feet from the high tide line. A small pocket beach directly in front of the house is a wonderful spot for a quick picnic on the rocks, or you can sit in chairs on the lawn with your feet on the stone wall and take in the spectacular sunsets over the Bay. Entire days can be whiled away on the large sand beach that is just steps from the house.

The house is well-appointed as it is our summer home as well. (We like comfortable beds and down pillows and we suspect you do too.) We rent the house the weeks that we are unable to be there. There is a large eat-in kitchen, a dining room with a fireplace, a large living room with a fireplace, four bedrooms and two full baths (one up and one down). There is a also a very large cushioned window seat in a nook at the front of the house that makes for a great spot to read or watch the goings on out on Penobscot Bay. The downstairs bedrooms have two twin beds and a double bed respectively. Upstairs there is a king-size bed and a set of twin bunk beds. There is also a small room outside the master bedroom with a full-size crib. The house has lots of windows and it is impossible to forget that you are anywhere but on the rocky coast of Maine, even when you are indoors.

The living room has shelves and cupboards full of books, magazines, games and puzzles for all ages, as well as a toy box and a small wooden train set. For outdoor time, there are lawn chairs, beach chairs, a hammock, a large picnic table, sand toys, and a tree fort for the young and the young at heart.

If you need to venture from this wonderful spot, the local grocery store, well-stocked for summer visitors, is just a mile away and Stonington’s Main Street with its shops and galleries is about two miles away. The location of the house also makes it an easy jumping off spot for day trips to Acadia National Park (90 minutes away) or for hopping the Stonington ferry to Isle au Haut to explore its miles of shoreline and hiking trails. Whether you are a bird watcher, a hiker, a cyclist, a sailor, an avid kayaker eager to explore the multitude of islands within an easy paddle of Deer Isle, or a family looking for a great spot to relax and have fun, you will find that this property has all it takes for an idyllic vacation on the coast of Maine.

                      Penobscot Bay, with dozens of islands within paddling distance of Stonington, is one of the world's premiere sea kayaking destinations, There are a number of good hikes on the island and many more on Isle au Haut and Mount Desert Island, The nearby Island County Club is open to the public and has a nine hole course and three clay courts, Deer Isle is a hilly island, but for intrepid cyclists, the scenery can't be beaten, The Stonington Opera House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has live theatre, music and dance as well as films throughout the summer season, There are a number of restaurants on the island and more in Blue Hill, which is a 35 minute drive away

                      About the owner: We reside in Portland, Maine with our two teenage sons, our cats Sal and Einstein and our miniature Australian Shepherd Babe. We spent our summers at the house when the boys were young but busy schedules and professional lives have meant less time on Deer Isle in recent years. Hal is an MIT educated aeronautical engineer specializing in computational fluid dynamics. One of his most visible recent projects was as a member of the design team for New Zealand's Team Emirates AC 45 catamaran. Amy is a graduate of Bowdoin College and works as in house counsel for the Maine Community College System.

                      Why the Owner Chose Stonington:
                      We purchased the property in order to have a vacation home on Deer Isle. We had kayaked in various places up and down the Maine coast and loved paddling around Deer Isle and the islands of Merchant's Row more than any other place. Our children were two and a half and less than a year old at the time so the prospect of our own sandy beach, 3,000 feet of frontage, deep water access for the boats and 11 acres to explore and run around on was very appealing. And the appeal continues!

                      The Unique Benefits at this House:
                      The privacy afforded by the house, the various beaches, easy water access, the gorgeous sunsets, and the convenience of a mile to the grocery store, a couple of miles to town and a ferry out to Acadia National Park on Isle au Haut are just a few things that convinced us that this was the property for us. The house also felt like a home and with plenty of room for company. Being able to see water from every window, especially the big windows at the front of the house, and getting great light all day sealed the deal.
