Private Swimming, Peaceful Island Home on 2 Landscaped Acres
Year Purchased: 2005
Why the Owner Chose Keaau
We chose this home for so many reasons. We are located in a perfect location, remote but easily accessible to all destinations. We have our own private well with the best water on the island. Our property also contains a separate studio unit where we can stay when we visit. We decided to do a vacation rental so we could share this wonderful environment with others. It also allows us to maintain our property until one day we can retire and settle here.
We fell in love with this home at first site. We know you will too.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We love the views, the tropical breezes, the expanse of the two landscaped acres. Falling asleep to the tropical sounds and waking to the sunrise and birds singing. Swimming in our pool anytime day or night, our private outdoor shower. Feeding the koi in the mornings. Many colorful water lilies to enjoy. Evening walks around the 2 acres to check on our fruit trees. Cool trade winds that come in through the windows. Enjoying Island coffee in the mornings and island drinks in the evenings. A vacation resort of our very own.

Unbelievable!

This place is truly unbelievable. My wife, 1-year old daughter, and myself stayed here for a week and absolutely loved it. A couple of acres of complete serenity and non-stop fruit trees gave our newly exploring daughter tons of space to run around. The house was very spacious, comfortable, and clean. The master bedroom has windows that open right up into the yard and waking up to the rain there is an beautiful experience. The pool is incredible...I've never seen anything like it with its irregular shape and the gold-fish ponds located on the other side. It was walled in with a beautiful lava-rock wall and gate so there was never fear of our daughter accessing it without us. My wife loved this place. Toni and Kim were extremely hospitable and friendly...it was a joy spending a little time with them and getting further insights as to what the rest of the island offered. I would recommend renting a 4x4...while this place is completely accessible by car, if you are a little adventurous and want to explore the surrounding area in its entirety, a 4x4 is tons of fun. Of note, and in relation to an earlier review comment, the frog noise at night is everywhere on the Hilo side of the island...it has nothing to do with this place, specifically. It really is quite relaxing. I cannot say enough good about this place...have a blast! Chris & Lisa Chris & Lisa

We were very pleased with the house. It has a rustic feel which fits in well with the area. We found it to be clean and well-appointed. The small bed in the office was perfect for our two-and-a-half-year-old, but was big enough for me to share with her for a nap one afternoon. We couldn't get enough of the swimming pool (reef socks/water shoes are recommended), and the two toddlers in our group loved the koi pond. The black bottom of the pool kept the water nice and warm. The house was a convenient base (car required) for visits to Hawaii Volcanoes NP, Hilo, Puna, the Hamakua Coast, and Mauna Kea. We also stayed on the Kohala Coast and visited Kailua-Kona on this trip, but ultimately found this side of the island to be more to our liking. Although it does rain quite a bit, there is also warm sunshine every day. Plus, Hilo is a great little town. One last thing: we highly recommend Kaleo's Restaurant in Pahoa for its good food and live music nearly every night.

We would absolutely recommend this lovely home, especially if there are several people or children in the party. It's a bit off the beaten path, so teenagers would likely find it a bit too isolated. As an escape from the stress and noise of city life, it's perfect! The owners are lovely and we were very pleased with the communication we received. The 11:30PM call to give us the details of the tsunami warning was especially appreciated and thoughtful! A few items of note...The tree frogs are quite noisy, and some of the bedrooms do not have windows that close. If you're a light sleeper that may be an issue. The pool is beautiful, but be sure to bring or buy water socks because the bottom is a bit rough and irregular. And be sure to take advantage of the fantastic grill and excellent fresh seafood while you're there!

My daughters, 10 and 13, and I had an absolutely wonderful time; we did not want to leave: coffee by the koi and lily ponds, the delightful swimming pool, the geckos, lizards, toads, frogs, giant snails, flowers, fruit trees, evening rains, centrally located home...awesome! We are already planning our next trip back to this "Hawaiian Haven", and bring our menfolk this time. The house is decorated beautifully, has more than enough room to spread out, has everything one needs and the kitchen is well appointed. The Sunday local market is fun, unique and combined with the farmers market in Hilo, you can stay stocked in fresh fruit and vegetables on the cheap--so nice. We enjoyed snorkeling at the tidepools and swimming in the hotpond in Kapoho, our adventure to Shipman Beach on the Government Beach Trail near the house, walking to the ocean from Beach Road, and hanging out at the pool at the house for the day. It was especially fun taking the flashlight out at night and checking out the cane toads, geckos, snails, newts, bats, and other creatures that inhabit Hawaii. It was a pleasure to lay our heads down at night and listen to the crashing waves, the rain and the frogs chirping us to sleep. One quickly gets used this life in paradise...we can't wait to come back!

This vacation rental was generous in more ways than one. This well appointed home was like walking into a world of discovery. The koi and water lily ponds were spectacular for photographing at all times of the day. And the kitchen would please a chef of any caliber. The location made it easy to get to the volcano at the break of dawn for those award winning photos and to the market in Hilo for produce to prepare dinner that same evening. Not to mention all the points of interest inbetween. September is said to be the hottest month in Hawaii yet the cool breezes would roll in after sundown and it seemed to rain during most nights which made sleeping a delight. Mahalo for such an expressive stay...

I can't express enough how this place so exceeded my expectations, talk about space! You can spread your wings inside and out. It just sucks you in and never wants to let you go. You immediately feel like "it all belongs to you" and not someone else. Now how often does that ever happen while on vacation? I still find myself missing my relaxing morning coffee by the Koi pound, I'd return just for that alone. The location is in a great spot for day sights and adventures. But I always found myself driving a little faster to jump into the huge "cool" pool. OK, I'm ready to go back "NOW" :) Thanks to the "Hatch Family" for making me fell at home.
