Our family has been going to the Virginia Fall races for over 12 years. We lost our usual accommodations to an internet booking snafu. We were so devastated. We found Mt Welby and have universally decided to start a new tradition. Five couples can be a challenge but Mt Welby has such well appointed living spaces combining the historic past with all the modern conveniences that make it a very special experience. We can't wait to return again and again.

I cannot say enough about the benefits of getting out of the District and into the country for one's state of mind. Mt. Welby was the perfect answer to my overly-booked life. Within a 90 minute drive of DC, this small estate is a world away. The property is extremely private and deep in the country (although you will be surprised at how many well-heeled Washingtonians have properties nearby), so bring your food with you or a chef friend. The grounds are lovely, I loved the stacked stone walls, the over-sized Kitchen (perfect for family meals or entertaining), the outdoor shower, hot tub and the cushy, cushy beds. I used some of the herbs from the herb garden outdoors for meals and enjoyed the quaint country store in Sperryville (although a small grocer, they have organic). The property does have Internet and cable, but I spent the majority of my time cooking and reading, napping and catching up with close friends. I will introduce another small group of friends to Mt. Welby this Fall as this makes for a perfect near-DC respite. The property is extremely reasonable (particularly when split with similar like-minded companions) for the quality and size.

I simply cannot say enough nice things about Mt Welby. I have stayed there several times - usually as a quiet, romantic weekend getaway from the grind of urban DC/MD. The bedrooms are comfortable, the property is quiet and beautiful, and I find myself unwinding within moments of pulling into the driveway. That said, I have also attended a much larger afternoon/evening event at the property and was astounded and impressed at how well the estate handled a large reception... not to mention how beautifully it was laid out. The owner is a pleasure to work with and he is very knowledgeable of both the house (he rebuilt it himself!), and the surrounding area. Highly recommended!

My husband and I enjoy staying at Mt. Welby. We've been there several times. We always find new attractions and places to visit each time. The wine country, engaging polo matches and small town shopping and culture draw us to the area. Mt. Welby is close to all that and in addition, the charm and seclusion of the farm with its beautiful gardens, modern accoutrements and spacious rooms invite relaxation or good productivity if working. I highly recommend a stay at Mt. Welby.
