Why the Owner Chose Livingston

We bought the ranch for our enjoyment, but since it had 2 historic homes on the property, we decided to rent the Lewis 'n Clark Cabin and the Harrison Homestead seasonally. It is fun for us to watch others delight in our location, privacy, peace, and excellent fishing! We never tire of hearing compliments about the Lewis "n Clark Cabin or the Harrison Homestead.

Owner's Map of Livingston

My husband Dale, a surgeon who loves to fly fish and hunt, and I bought this ranch as soon as we arrived in Montana. We love living on the Yellowstone River, and our 3 sons now operate an international fly fishing company in Livingston, Mt--Sweetwatertravel. We have enjoyed watching our clients take advantage of all the recreational opportunities at the Vermillion Ranch and in our region. We do not intrude in your vacation, but we are here to help you with any arrangements or questions you have. I am originally from Maine, Dale from Kansas, and we met in Boston, where Dale trained and we lived for about 10 years. Living here is a pleasure we like to share!

Lewis and Clark Cabin

Guest: Patrick R.
Date of Stay: 07/30/11 Review Submitted: 10/26/11

Located on along the Lewis and Clark trail, this is both an historical site (the cabin was one of the first in the area, complete with bullet holes if you know where to look for) and a wonderful place to stay and relax. We were particularly delighted with the wild life that we could see right on the property (deers, geese, sand-hill cranes, feasants, rabbits, pelicans, oxpreys and many small birds -- not to mention wild turkeys), including in the yard just across the windows. We also enjoyed the mile or so of the yellowstone river that borders it, which is just great for fly fishing or floating down the river. The surroundings also offer many opportunities. A small town (Big Timber, about ten miles away) offers many facilities, including a vintage movie theater, and Livingston, Bozeman or Billings are not very far away. For anglers, many tributaries of the Yellowstone offer a variety of sites, and forest trails are nearby (we also took this opportunity to spend a couple of days in the Yellowstone Park). All in all, a wonderful, relaxing stay in the middle of nature in the wild wild west!

Owner response:Another fine review of the varied opportunities that our ranch provides.I am glad they mentioned visiting Yellowstone Park , because it is a beautiful drive down the Paradise Valley into the Park and returning via one a the most outstanding highways in the U.S.--The Beartooth Highway, which goes over a high pass through the mountains into the Park. Many of our clients do this and say the extra driving is worth it to stay at our ranch, where there is lots of privacy, and choice of activities without being surrounded by the crowds around Yellowstone. margaret and Dale, owners

Your Own Private Hideaway

Guest: Denise N.
Date of Stay: 07/30/11 Review Submitted: 10/21/11

The Lewis n’ Clark Cabin offers beauty, serenity, privacy and relaxation all wrapped up in a very clean awesome cabin. It has luxurious beds, pillows and linens and about anything else you might want or need. With grand Bonanza style Big Sky views from the bedroom loft; you will drift off to sleep with the sound of Aspen leaves rustling in the evening breeze. The owner’s really know how to treat their guests and even offer them a private spot on the Yellowstone River for fishing and water fun! The cabin is surrounded by trees and has numerous fans inside to keep you cool even when the temperature outside is in the mid-90s! If you take a dog(s) the fence yard surrounding the cabin is a plus as they can go outside without you and you don't have to worry about them roaming. We spent many hours each day just relaxing in the screened in porch watching deer, birds and the cutest little bunnies, the dog really liked those. The Lewis n’ Clark Cabin exceeded our expectations in every way! A PERFECT PLACE TO CHILL OUT AND HAVE FUN!

Owner response:This review makes me want to book my own cabin! Our wonderful guests appreciate our efforts to please, and we are thrilled that they enjoy our ranch as much as we do. We agree that it is,"A PERFECT PLACE TO CHILL OUT AND HAVE FUN!" Even for us that is true. We are here to help, but not to be intrusive of your privacy and family enjoyment of the Lazy MD.

Lewis and Clark House

Guest: Felicia E.
Date of Stay: 08/21/11 Review Submitted: 10/21/11

We love staying at the Vermillion ranch. The Lewis and Clark house is comfortable, clean, and cozy. It's easy to get to from the Bozeman or Billings airport. It is the perfect get-away and the Yellowstone river with its blue ribbon fishing is right out the door. Evening and afternoon walks, good cooking facilities, and comfortable beds. Heaven! Warm and hospitable.

Owner response:I am glad we had a review that mentioned our excellent fishing right out the door--see the pictures on our web of a few of the trout caught on the Yellowstone and neighboring streams. We have access to some of the best guides in our state,if you want guided floats or just a guide to help with techniques on the rivers, while wading.

Wonderful vacation location

Guest: Mona C.
Date of Stay: 07/04/11 Review Submitted: 10/19/11

We loved the cabin and the surrounding area. Very quiet, lots of interesting wild life in the area - sometimes in the front yard! The cabin is very well equiped, had all the cooking utensils we needed and then some. The furnishings were rustic, perfect for the setting. Very comfortable beds, lots of towels, everything we needed for a very memorable stay.

Owner response:These clients found our cabin and setting very comfortable and enjoyable. They forgot to mention our new screened in porch, which allows clients to watch wildlife into the pleasant evening hours. I know they enjoyed that also. Margaret Vermillion

Until next year

Guest: Brad C.
Date of Stay: 08/23/11 Review Submitted: 10/16/11

Lewis and Clark cabin was worth every mile from N.C. to Montana. In fact, we are already excited about coming back next year. In 2010 we took our 4th sight-seeing trip to Montana as well as visting other surrounding states and Canada. During the 2010 vacation we decided for our 2011 vacation to STAY in Montana. Both of us were attracted to it's natural beauty and wildlife. We began to work on the 'where' to stay. We did not want to be in a place that was commercialized with a lot of tourist. Lewis and Clark cabin turned out to be perfect for us. Being on a ranch with surrounding ranches was definitely not touristy! You got a feel for ranch life regarding quietness, animals and ranch work. However the Lewis and Clark cabin is not 'roughing it. We love outdoors but are not 'campers' nor the 'bunk house' type. The cabin was just plain perfect. It has all the creature comforts you have at home. The screened-in porch was my favorite. We would have 'wine-time' in the evenings and watch the wildlife come around. Although this is (by most people's) standards isolated there is a grocery store in Big Timber. Larger grocery stores are in Livingstone, Bozeman and other places you will want to visit. You can do as much or as little as you like. I rented a bike and rode about every day. Brad fly-fished. Next year I would like to go horse-back riding and I may take a fly fishing lesson. There really wasn't enough time for us to do everything in 2 weeks. One day we took a day trip to Yellowstone and another we went to the Gallatin National Forest. Shopping is really good in Livingstone, Bozeman and Red Lodge especially if you like antiques or animal/nature art. I have to say what I enjoyed the most about Lewis and Clark was being able to bring our 2 dogs. They really enjoyed the property. It was great for running with them or taking Ducky and Nessy to the pond to swim. The Yellowstone River that runs through the ranch (another added bonus) was great for dogs and fishing. The river and surrounding mountains make this getaway one of the prettiest places we have stayed. It gets an A+. The negative is the day you have to leave.

Owner response:Wow! This review says it all from returning clients, who were here for 2 weeks. After reading it, I feel that we are doing a great job in making everyone happy. That is our goal to give you the best satisfaction possible for your time here at the ranch. They have expressed everything we like about the cabin/ranch and feel that to date, all of our past clients would agree with this review. margaret Vermillion(owner)
