Hula Hideaway is a special vacation rental located in the small quaint valley of Moloaa, Kauai. It is perched above a lush tropical garden with ocean and mountain views. The producers of Gilligan's Island thought so highly of this location they filmed the pilot here. And just like the show... this beach still feels like a deserted island. Hula Hideaway is located across the stream from the beach and beach access is a one minute walk. Many a days one can find themselves completely alone on this magical beach. If you love to snorkel this is one of the gem ocean locations on Kauai.

Hula Hideaway offers incredible ocean and mountain views, in a remarkably private setting. It is designed with hardwood floors, slate tile entry and bath, walls of windows for a nearly 360 degree view. The 'Hideaway' has a king bed upstairs and a queen bed and queen sleeper sofa downstairs in its own separate studio, both up and down bedrooms have a complete bathroom attached. Imagine watching the sunrise from the comforts of your bed and watching the sun setting over the majestic mountain vista while dining on either the ocean or mountain view decks.

Hula Hideaway is accessed by a private bridge across the Moloaa Stream. The house is situated in "the" ideal location in Moloaa Bay. It is not right on the beach, where you are constantly baraged with wind and waves. It is far enough away to feel the peace yet close enough to hear and smell it. The house is nestled amongst a tropical landscape complete with coconut, banana, avocado, mango, papaya, plumeria, and a variety of citrus and exotic flowers, WHICH YOU ARE WELCOME TO PICK. Moloaa Beach is 100 yds. away and its privacy makes it feel like the old days of Hawaii....On most days of the year it is perfect for swimming, snorkeling or just strolling the beach. It really is a piece of paradise.

If you like walking, a 20 minute stroll up the road towards the main highway takes you to Moloaa Fruit Stand, where you can get coffee, smoothies , fruit , breakfast and lunch, a great early morning walk... The other direction , north on the beach , brings you to the end of the beach where you can take the trail up along the cliffs and watch Albatross & Frigate birds, turtles and whales during season. (Dec.-April) Moloaa Bay is truly a "special" place to spend your vacation and Hula Hideaway is a special place to spend it in... I hope you discover what i have, and come and see and experience it for yourselves...
Aloha Richard
p.s. a lot of people ask if this is 2 separate houses? the answer is no, if you are 2 people renting the house the whole house is yours, if your are 4 the same applies. Also, please check our calendar before your inquiry, it is always up to date.....

Great stay at a beautiful house!

Guest: Texas Crew (Georgetown, TX )
Date of Stay: 07/14/11 Review Submitted: 07/24/11

We did a lot of research before we left for this trip and saw all the good reviews for this place. We were not disappointed! We felt right at home right away. It is very comfortable and everyone loved the feeling of a luxury treehouse! We have two teenage boys so the downstairs was great for them and they loved it. At night we had the privacy of the upstairs all to ourselves. Super location with the beach right there and about halfway between the airport and Princeville. The snorkeling on the far left side is awesome. Lots of tropical fish! Don't worry about packing or renting snorkel gear...all you need is already at the house for you to use! The whole house was so well stocked. We stopped at the store on the way to house and bought some groceries and of course forgot lots of things. Got to the house and there was everything we needed already there! Speaking of shopping.....stop at Safeway and take a few minutes to get one of their loyalty cards and prices are not much more than the mainland. Be sure and read the note on fridge. Everything you need to know is right there. Don't forget to feed Ginger! (like she would let you!) She will find you every evening and every morning and let you know when it is time to eat. I am a dog person myself but she was a cool cat. She definitely took care of my "pet fix" while I was missing my dog back home. The roosters never bothered us. We have chickens at home and I guess we were used to them. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained (I do landscape maintenance) and we enjoyed the coconuts and papaya as well as all the beautiful flowers. This is my first time to ever review a place we stayed at and I just had to write because it was so nice and wanted to let others know. Enjoy your stay! Thanks Richard for sharing your beautiful home.

Owner response:Thank you so much for the kind words. As I have said to many, Hula Hideaway and Moloaa Bay are truly gems in a shrinking world.....

The Hula Hideaway is Truly a Hidden Gem

Date of Stay: 07/06/11 Review Submitted: 07/21/11

Where to start? Rent this home! You won't be sorry. It sits less than 100 yards from the beach at Moloaa Bay. This beach is secluded, beautiful and great for swimming. If you want large crowds this is not for you. If you like a beach where you are likely to see 3-5 people on the entire beach at any given time this is your place. We went with a 14 and 10 year old and they had no problem with the water. Some local people advised us where the swimming was safest (to the far corners of each side). Google Moloaa Bay images and they are right on point as to what it looks like. In terms of the accuracy of the photos the same can be said for the VRBO photos of this home. They tell it like it is which as most of you know is not always the case. The home is about a mile or more off the main road. It is about 4 miles or so north of Kapaa and about 14-15 miles from Hanelei. We loved the central location. The upstairs has everything a family of four or more could need. Very clean, suprisingly very cool and comfortable at night, a washer and dryer and lovely outside shower. The grounds are very well maintained with flora and fauna in abundance. Good decks with ocean veiws. (Yes, you are close enough to hear the ocean especially at night). Comfortable beds and very hungry cat. If they could somehow train the cat to chase off the roosters she would be perfect. Wake up call is at 5:00 a.m. when the roosters begin crowing but I imagine that is the same in most rental homes away from the large hotels and condo complexes. No big deal really. The downstairs is also very clean and accomodating. Rent this home. You wont' be sorry and for the price it will truly be the least expensive thing you do on your trip.

Owner response:Thanks Rod for the kind words. I have tried to get ''Ginger'' to get the roosters, alas to no avail...

Hula Hideaway

Date of Stay: 04/03/11 Review Submitted: 04/15/11

We just returned from a 10 day stay at this wonderful property! I did not want to leave. It has windows all around which feels like you are in a private tree house. The yard is big, tropical and well maintained. The downstairs was perfect for our 16 yr. old son and his friend to sleep and relax. It is a 2 min. walk to a big, beautiful and virtually deserted beach. On the busiest day we counted 8 other people! The property is bit of a drive, maybe 10 minutes, from any "town". We loved that feeling of being separated and somewhat "local". Richard, the owner, was immediate and helpful in all correspondence. There is an outdoor shower, with hot water, that is wonderful anytime. Not just after the beach! The town of Hanalei is great, as is the entire North Shore. There are so many beautiful beaches and hikes to do. Some wonderful shops and restaurants nearby as well. We plan on returning next year...for two weeks!!

Beautiful Location!

Guest: Muriel & Cory, Nancy & Bob (Whitehorse, Y.T. and Kamloops B.C.)
Date of Stay: 02/26/11 Review Submitted: 04/07/11

We were 2 couples renting the main upstairs and the studio down below and it worked out pretty good - we each had our own space and then we would meet upstairs for afternoon cocktails on the deck and then dinner. The house had all the amenities that you would need, and the garden and views are beautiful! The location is great - Moloaa Beach is a great place to spend the day...very quiet...even saw turtles and monk seals having their naps on the beach. It's also a good base to explore the beaches on the Northern and Eastern Shores, and there are some good hikes as well that are only a short drive away. Thankfully the Tsunami (that devestated Japan) ended up only being a small wave in Moloaa - had to evacuate the area - but no damage - I can see why all the houses in the area are built on stilts! Mahalo!!! We hope to return..one day! p.s. we even enjoyed the morning visits from Ginger the Cat demanding to be fed!

Quiet, relaxing getaway

Guest: Island Girl from Oahu (Oahu)
Date of Stay: 01/02/11 Review Submitted: 02/10/11

The house was very clean and looked just like the photographs. The only things that surprised us were that the upstairs is just one big open room (so no bedroom door that closes for privacy), the downstairs was also just one room (so the bed and pull-out couch are in the same room), and the stairs to go upstairs are outside the house. That said, the view was lovely and it was about a five minute walk to a practically private beach. You could also hear the waves crashing from the house, which made for great sleeping. It was a perfect distance (maybe 1 1/2 or 2 miles) to jog or walk to the fruit stand in the morning, and the neighborhood was lovely and quiet. Aside from the great house and the beach, the outdoor shower was fabulous! You can shower outside with the privacy of plants and trees around the edge of the yard, and the outdoor shower always had plenty of hot water. The owner always answered all of our questions via email promptly, and we received our deposit back right away. I would absolutely stay there again, and there was plenty of room for four people to stay there. As far as nearby recommendations - we saw whales playing off shore from the Kilauea Lighthouse (which was a short drive North from the house), saw the entire island by Blue Hawaii helicopters, and enjoyed every restaurant we tried in Kapaa, Hanalei, and Kilauea. For sunset dinner and drinks at a more touristy place, we recommend the Beach House in Poipu. We would absolutely stay at this rental property again.

Owner response:Thank you. A quick reply about the open room concept. This house was built in the "Pod" concept. 2 pods connected by a hallway leading to front and rear lanais. This design affords views from almost every angle inside the house. I can see your point about privacy if there were more than 2 people sleeping upstairs at a time , but it has not been an issue for any of the people who have stayed there. The downstairs is a studio apartment as stated and as I have been told is perfect for another couple or teenage and older children.

Great week at Hula Hideay

Guest: Happy to return (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
Date of Stay: 12/07/08 Review Submitted: 02/08/11

`We spent a week at Hula Hideaway in December & the place was even better than we had anticipated. First of all the island itself is very special & different from the other islands both in terms of lush vegetation, panoramic mountain views and a certain rustic charm. Even though Kauai is a fairly small island, there are wonderful places to visit, all of which can be done well within a day, and good restaurants nearby to Moloaa Bay, for when we didn't want to stay home for dinner. The house is at end of a road (more like a laneway actually) with no traffic to speak of & is right across from a very secluded & wonderful beach (Moloaa Bay) where you can either walk without seeing a lot of other people or you can swim /snorkel from, which consisted of our daily exercise. The house is very well equipped - clean & modern, with all the amenities & very pretty. The little bachelor apartment below the main house was great for our teenager who wanted ( as we also did) a little privacy. It was great waking up to the sight & sound of the ocean from our sleeping quarters & we particularly enjoyed morning coffee out on the back deck with nothing much to see except the ocean. Professional management with no "glitches"

What a beach!

Guest: Daniel (Vancouver, BC)
Date of Stay: 01/08/11 Review Submitted: 01/22/11

Been to Kauai five times before and have never had a chance to see Moloaa, it's now one of my favorite places! Even on "crowded" day it's pretty well empty. The house was great, close to the beach, very quiet and secluded and the bonus is ginger the cat that lives under the house! You won't be disappointed.

Owner response:Thank you for the kind words. Moloaa is a rare place. I have traveled to over 70 countries and Moloaa Bay is truly unique. The quiet, natural beauty, lack of development and the best climate in the world makes it a piece of paradise...Hula Hideaway has to be one of my favorite houses I have owned,(there have been a lot ), and yes Ginger the cat makes you feel even more at home...thank you for the kind words...Richard

Paradise at Moloa'a

Guest: Debby (Edmonton, AB Canada)
Date of Stay: 10/01/10 Review Submitted: 11/01/10

My family just spent a most amazing two weeks in Kauai, falling in love with the island, and especially Moloa'a. We immediately felt at home in the house, which was extremely clean and well-stocked, as well as being very private. Moloa'a Bay is as secluded and quiet as described, and we enjoyed many hours swimming and snorkeling in the Bay. It was wonderful to spend a day exploring Kauai - swimming, mountain climbing, jumping off waterfalls - and then coming home and enjoying a lovely evening eating supper out on the lanai. The birds, the scenery, those fantastic ocean breezes, and the peace and beauty of the house all contributed to making our holiday the best we've ever had. We are already planning our next trip and will definitely stay here again! Many thanks, Richard!
