Do as much or as little as you wish this summer's vacation on Swan's Island at our 1920's shingled cottage. It is a short ferry ride from Bass Harbor to this haven of relaxation.
Enjoy the privacy of living on a secluded point, minutes from the ferry terminal, just steps from the water's edge and its panoramic views reaching from Bass Harbor Lighthouse to Blue Hill Bay. Relish the sights and sounds of the ocean, beginning with spectacular sunrises and ending with outstanding sunsets; from watching lobster boats haul in their daily catch, windjammers gliding by, to listening to the steady hum of the ferry boat making its daily runs.
Watch the seals and dolphins perform for you, sea gulls and cormorants dive for their meals. Stroll the pebble beach and rocky shoreline surrounding our point...it is all out the front door. The smoke-free, pet-free cottage has an array of views from every window (all 44).
Our family retreat blends the quaintness of a time "gone by" with the amenities of the present, re-decorated and recapturing an era of tastefulness and refinement. The first floor offers a kitchen with a newer electric stove, microwave, food processor, blender, coffee maker and grinder. One phone (with answering machine) is in the kitchen, one phone in the living room.
There is a formal dining room (table seats eight), large living room with working fireplace, full bath (tub/shower), bedroom(double bed), glass-enclosed front porch furnished in wicker chairs and wood rocking chairs. Upstairs you will find three bedrooms (two double beds, two singles)and a full bath tub/shower/heater/skylight). In addition to the living room fireplace, a Monitor heater is located in the dining room.
Do not feel like cooking? There are a number of take-out restaurants (listed in the phone book)among them the Underwater Taxi, which will cook lobsters for you if you are not in the mood. Fresh seafood is available there and at the Fisherman's Co-op along with church suppers and a bakery near the ferry terminal.
Hike, bike, kayak, picnic, swim - bike and kayak rentals are available on Swan's Island. A short hike up our road will find you at the school's playground. Another half-mile and you are at the Library. Head to the Fine Sand Beach for a swim and picnic or drive to the quarry for a fresh-water swim.
Awesome views are found at the Burnt Coat light house and all around the working harbor. Not enough? Plan a day-trip to the Mainland and see Acadia and Bar Harbor. Park at the ferry terminal and walk aboard the ferry to Bass Harbor, where you can catch the Island Shuttle bus. If you prefer, take the car on the ferry and spend the day sight-seeing. Remember, the last ferry from Bass Harbor to Swan's Island leaves at 4:30 pm each day!
If the weather turns wet, enjoy many puzzles and games or curl up on the down-filled couch with one of the many books available. Borrow a video from the Library or visit one of the gift shops. When the sun is shining, play a game of badminton, frisbee, horsehoes or picnic on the table in the front yard.
