Vacation on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm and stay in our Pond House, on the shore of one of the most beautiful ponds you can imagine. Children and adults enjoy fishing, hiking the woodland trails, watching the constant activities of nature around the pond, watching the horses and cattle, and horseback riding with our neighbors at Oakland Heights.
The Pond House was totally rebuilt and refurnished in 2004. It has two bedrooms (one queen, one bunk bed with double bed on bottom), plus a den with queen-sized pull-out couch.
The best feature, however, is the screened back deck overlooking the gorgeous pond.
Be sure to visit the farm's website using the link at the foot of this listing. Also see our Manor House (vrbo #90926).

"Pond House" - on Huge Horse Farm; Great for Young Families
Year Purchased: 2003
Why the Owner Chose Charlottesville
The Charlottesville area is one of the most beautiful parts of America. The landscape is just wonderful. You enjoy all the amenities of civilization, but in an area that is rural and dotted with small towns and villages. There is a reason why Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Governor Barbour, James Monroe and many other historical figures chose to live in this area, and why a number of modern jet setters have hideaways in the area today.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
We love the back porch and pond. Its one of the most pleasant places on earth. The table and chairs out there get lots of use, both at mealtimes and whenever we wish to read or write. Our grandchildren love to stay at the Pond House because its so easy to step out the door and down to the edge of the pond, where they see lots of pond life (turtles, geese, fish and minnows, dragonflies, frogs, crayfish, red-winged blackbirds, hawks & eagles (yes we have golden eagles), etc.).
Jefferson's famous home, Monticello, is a gorgeous 30 minute drive from the farm. While there, you can also visit Michies Tavern, Jefferson Vineyards, and James Monroe's home.
James and Dolley Madison's home, Montpelier, is a 15 minute drive from the farm. The farm is on land that Madison once owned. Montpelier was restored and reopened to the public just a few years ago. The steeplechase track from the era of the Dupont ownership still adorns the front lawn.
Gordonsville was a railroad crossroads, and the Exchange Hotel was where people stayed when transferring from one rail line to another. During the Civil War, the hotel became a Confederate Hospital. Now, the Hotel is a museum showing how Civil War soldiers were treated medically.
Gordonsville has more fine restaurants than anyone should expect. Le Pomme (French, of course); Fabio's (Northern Italian); Tolivar House (Fine American Fare); the Inwood (traditional American Roadhouse); and the Bar-b-que Exchange (the chef from Keswick Hall does bar-b-que?).
Our friends at Oakwood Heights offer guided trail rides up the mountain. It is about 1/2 mile from our front entrance.
If skydiving is on your bucket list, you can do a tandem dive at the Orange airport with Skydive Orange.
Barboursville Winery is sort of the grandaddy of Central Virginia's wine industry. It has a wonderful tasting room, award winning wines, and a fabulous restaurant on site. While there, see the Barboursville ruins and visit several nice art galleries in the village. If you have a designated driver, make a second winery stop at Horton on your way back. You will pass it.
Just before the Gordonsville traffic circle, Floridise Orchids will be on your right. The greenhouse is packed with beautiful orchids at reasonable prices, and yes you can keep an orchid alive and see it bloom year after year.
Owner's Map of Charlottesville
My wife and I live in Virginia Beach, where we have been buying and rehabbing run down properties for many years. In 2003, I was looking for a small "getaway" property close to the mountains. I overshot and ended up purchasing a rundown old horse farm (584 acres), with three houses and two big barns. After 18 months of rehab work, we opened two of the houses for guests.

Our thanks to Tina for meeting us & giving us the history of the Pond House and for having everything prepared for our visit. Our thanks also to the owners for sharing this beautiful house and setting. We especially enjoyed the fishing and the quiet evenings on the porch. Thanks again for providing a wonderful retreat.

A lovely peaceful place. Isabel (3) & Sam (1) loved the horses (in fact Sam's first word is "neigh neigh") and frogs in the pond. A good base for exploring. The wolves howling in the woods at night added to the atmosphere. Hope to be back. (Owner's footnote: probably Coyotes, not Wolves)

Great way to bring in the new year 2011 . . . relaxing in the Pond House! Bavarian Chef in Madison for dinner, wineries nearby, and Toliver House for lunch all made for an excellent New Year's get-a-way weekend from Richmond. Thanks!
