Escape to Your Quiet Ranch Retreat!
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
Looking for a quiet retreat to get away from it all? Let us help you plan that escape! Relax, explore and birdwatch on our 706 acre working ranch while staying in one or all of our 3 country homes. The Maetze House: Our flagship 1877 restored home consists of 3 bedrooms each w/private bath. The Green Jay Cottage: Our new getaway! 2 bedroom, 1 bath home; and the Hummingbird House, a cozy one room cottage with 2 porches and kitchennette.
You set the pace. From meditation to exhilarating mountain biking through the many trails on the ranch. Rock on the large porch catching SE breezes, be amused by miniature donkeys grazing and playing in the pastures, reflect on the rising or setting sun and moon. Read, play games, dine - or just commune by the fireplace in the comfortable living room under the light of our 18th century chandelier. Family time could not be better with our modern kitchen and comfortable living room. The kitchen is stocked with coffees, teas, spices, cookware and utensils, dishes and napkins. Four couples or a couple of families can comfortably share the communal space. Romance in the privacy of the large Jane Long suite while bathing in the double bathtub under the reflective prism lights of a Waterford chandelier and cozy up to the private en-suite fireplace. Unwind under the stars by the firepit at night.
The Historic Maetze-von Dohlen home was built in 1877 in Goliad Texas and in 2005 was moved to its new home at the Barnhart Q5 Ranch, just north of Berclair TX, halfway between Goliad and Beeville. Lovingly restored, pine walls, 12 foot ceilings, fireplaces and 6 foot windows with panoramic views make this an ideal setting for a romantic weekend or family vacation.
The Barnhart Q5 Ranch was awarded Texas Parks & Wildlife's Lone Star Land Steward Award in 2004 and has over 18 miles of hike and bike trails through its rolling hills of South Texas brush country. Our native grasses provide wildlife feed year-round and wildlife viewing and photography blinds are provided at each of our 8 ponds. Located within the migratory path, birdwatchers can see large numbers of green jay, bunting, raptors, heron, ibis, hummingbird, and more. Deer, Bobwhite quail, dove, turkey, and the occasional bobcat can be sighted. The night sky is free of light pollution and loaded with stars. Grab your pillows and head for our new, raised, STARGAZING PLATFORM on the ranch's high point for fabulous stargazing while coyote serenade you. Bring your own horses - stabling fees at $25./night per.
Plan your trip around one of Goliad's special events - monthly Market Days, Missions Tour de Goliad bike ride, Texas Mile, the Living History programs, and Christmas in Goliad to name a few. Goliad is a premier Texas historic destination, with its Presidio La Bahia, the oldest Spanish fort in existence today, it is the birthplace of General Ignacio Zaragoza, and home to Goliad State Park built around the Mission Espiritu Santo. Downtown Goliad features the Market House Museum and Courthouse Square with fabulous shopping and award winning restaurants, as well as beautiful architecture dating back to the early 1800's. The Goliad Golf Club is open to you, as is the 'family friendly' Coleto Creek Park & Reservoir where trophy bass are being caught regularly.
SPECIAL NOTE: The Barnhart Q5 Ranch Retreat is located on a working South Texas ranch. For the uninitiated, those few words have a lot of meaning. First, we are not offering our guests 'Hilton-esque' accomodations. We are a natural facility. Guests here could have unique encounters with our rural residents: field mice, honey bees, yellow jackets, skunks, snakes and other natural residents call the ranch home and help us maintain a balanced natural ecosystem. Next, someone once said that everything which bites, sticks or scratches must live in South Texas! Our ecosystem does consist of a variety of thorny bushes, trees, and cactus that have been sculpted to provide habitat for the thousands of birds, hundreds of mammals and reptiles that live here. We make every effort to keep our trails mowed and roads cleared for your comfort and safety.

Hi, attached are some photos from our visit to the Q5 Ranch, Our entire family had a wonderful stay, well actually multiple stays as we revisited before I actually wrote this to you. My wife was able to relax and read, hike, and we all enjoyed riding the golf carts, hiking seeing wildlife, taking photos, play with the donkeys...she talks often about the wonderful historic Maetze sp? house. The boys 6 and 8 spent the first couple minutes complaining about no TV and Video games and then somehow managed to play for 2 and 1/2 days without mentioning them again. The hammock, the donkeys, the cart rides, building fires, and mostly catching frogs! kept them going all day! Your trails are great and I really enjoyed the photography and stars, in addition to the rest. Most of all the hospitality y'all showed us made the experience exceptional. We will be back again, always with a camera! The Phillips, January 2011Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities.

Claire and Mr. Barhart are the best. I have now been a repeating guest since 2008 and am so satisfied that we now make excuses to visit the ranch. It is a must to buy carrots in advance -- for the mini donkeys, and if you are a history buff, make time tim spend time in the city of Goliad. Eat at Panache on the Square and say hi to Rick. A must. Also, a visit the Mayor's bar behind the antique store which is the perfect end of a great day. If you do not have Goliad as your home away from home, you are missing out. I promise, you need to get here as fast as you can.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.
Owner response: Enter Text We're always looking forward to visits from our friends G & G! They spoil us rotten with their carrots (for the donkeys) and their upbeat, positive personalities... they're a PRIME example of why we love this business!

In Sept 2007, I was host to two Russians, Jeanna and Dmitri, whom I knew would enjoy seeing an authentic piece of ranching Texas. Plus it gave them time to relax and get over the jet lag before a frantic week of business. With our interpreter, we rented both houses and had a terrific stay. Toured the ranch, played with the donkeys, ate and drank, and even did a little fishing. But mostly we just relaxed. John and Claire are both friends of mine, but I know they treat all their guests the same - as if you were their great friends who just hadn't been around for awhile. Jeanna tells me how fond she is of John (and Claire) almost every time we talk. -- Highly recommended.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Our stay was during a glorious, wildflower laden spring week. We had a wonderful time. The accomodations are comfortable and filled with folk art. The ranch is an inspiration of ecofriendly practice. And we loved the hosts and their donkeys.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Dear Claire, To see what can be done with land when it receives care is always inspiring. You have made a model that I hope your neighbors will follow. Thank you for a wonderful weekend which was full of surprises. The house is perfect with a ranch setting and atmosphere that encourages relaxation. It was easy to feel at home there. We love Goliad, with its spectacular courthouse, beautiful Missions, and a town that has given new life to its old buildings. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home and town with us on our visit.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Claire, We all had a great time at your ranch retreat in June. I wanted you to know how much we appreciated the length you we to in order to make our stay so pleasant! I think it is great that you rescued the old house and made it available for new memories to be made. We wish you much success with it. Sincerely, Kathy Mondin (& Family)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/2

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Claire Barnhart and W. Lee O'Daniel visit the Mission Espiritu Santo in Goliad, TX.
Why the Owner Chose Goliad:
Our family ranch, located in historic Goliad County, Texas near the small town of Berclair, is a place of natural beauty. The South Texas sunrises, sunsets and dark night skies are breathtaking. My husband and father and I live on the ranch and wanted to share this place with guests so they could have the opportunity to experience these things, and see how a South Texas ranch operates. We purchased the 1877 Maetze von Dohlen home, originally located in Goliad, and moved it to the ranch property in 2005, restored it, and make it available to guests to enjoy the ranch.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We are within the migratory path of the hummingbirds, wood stork, bunting, sandhill crane and other wonderful bird and butterfly species. While here visitors are encouraged to relax and explore the 706-acres of the ranch - hike and bike 18 miles of trails, or bring your own horses and ride the trails, participate in ranching operations, set up in our photographic blinds at the various water sources around the property. We raise Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys and cattle. Our donkeys are social animals who love attention!
